Why is Seton Hall so good?

I get Powell is a difference maker but SHU otherwise lost most of last years starters.
Is coaching better?
We lose to Fordham and struggle at home to beat Columbia.
SHU goes on the road to knock off Maryland.
The Pirates most likely go to the NCAA tourney again this season and we talk about maybe
going to the NIT in the next two years.
27 years and counting...
Frustrating!

Recruiting. Period.

Which is crazy because I cant see how any high school kid would wanna go to seton hall. Admittedly I grew up a seton hall fan, a family member of mine was an important person in the athletic department there so we had tickets to every game. When I was about 13 years old I watched Paul Gause all 5’10 of him beat the **** out of David Palmer all 6’9 of him at seton hall bball summer camp.

When it came time to apply to colleges I didnt even apply to SHU because the campus reminded me of just a slightly larger high school, everything was old, ugly and it was a commuter school. It’s miraculous that they attract kids there because there aint much to sell

One thing I have noticed about them is they are not deep but their good players are consistent. You get pretty much the same game from them each time out. Not always obviously but by and large they play well every time out. Look at us as just the opposite. Look how we shot threes in the first four games now we can't hit a three at all. Also, our scoring leaders, Eugene being the possible exception, vary from game to game. Inconsistency is a killer.

That's an argument that facilities aren't the key.
It's mind boggling.

Add coaching before your period.
Idk man. If you rank their players 1-8 and then ranked ours 1-8, theyre better than us across the board talent wise.

SHU
1) Powell
2) Mamu
3) Nzei
4) McKnight
5) Cale
6) Nelson
7) Thompson
8) Rhoden

RU
1) Geo
2) Eugene
3) Kiss?
4) Carter?
5) Mathis?
6) Harper?
7) Doorson?
8) Johnson?

I mean theres a pretty big talent gap. Plain and simple.

Having a guy like Powell makes everyone better. Seriously, replace Powell with just an okay player and SHU is still a good team but the other guys probably are not as good. I can’t stand it, but they’re good

As much as it kills to say, their program is leaps and bounds better than ours. More history. More tradition.

Hence they’re more attractive to better players.

All about recruiting talent.

I think it's a lack of a solid point guard.
Hopefully with next years incoming class we finally see the difference.
Although I have been saying that for almost three decades.

True, but how they stack up against UK and UMD? How did RU stack up against Fordham and Columbia? It’s not just head to head.

What type of recruit was Powell out of HS ? Nearly even broadcast they reference how he was in the upper 200’s of pounds and transformed his body down to 195lbs. He looks like a real thick 195 if you asked me. But curious if he developed into that kind of player or if he was a huge get for SHU as a recruit.

Please ur only 2 possessions better. And we’re small and poor. Peculiar arguments in America n

Because guys like Powell and Cale learned from an established group of talent how to be studs. They didn’t have to be the man from day 1. Look back at Whitehead’s first year and how it took two years for that talent to click.

Nah, they dont have much history or tradition. They made the final 4 in 89 and had a nice season in ‘91. Theres not much history and tradition. Ive never admitted this on here before today but I was an enormous seton hall fan until I enrolled at RU in 2010. It honestly really took me until like 2014 to fully convert. Few followed SHU bball as close as me from about ‘98 to 2014.

I honestly dont know how theyre attracting talent to South Orange. The campus is a disaster and it’s dead, it is truly a commuter school. I was a huge seton hall and wouldnt even apply to the school. Their facilities suck, they play at the rock, their fanbase is kinda weak, the school academically aint great, they have had ONE dude drafted since 2001 and that was a 2nd rounder in Whitehead so its not like theyre an nba breeding ground. I dont get it

Sure, but compared to RU, they have a lot more tradition.

Heck, beside UConn and Cuse, SHU has been the most successful program in the northeast in my lifetime. Debatable, yes.

I was a SHU fan too growing up. My friends were (and still are). They’ve earned Jersey hoops for decades.

They’re s city school that is basketball heavy. They’ve had success. Good coach. Most historic conference, arguably. Lots to like about SHU.

4 star top 100 player. Some schools might have backed off cause he gained a ton of weight

What tradition does SHU have? One final 4 appearance in the 80’s? Sure we have one in the 70’s. They won 2 ncaa tourney games since 2000, hardly tradition.

Most historic conference? Bruh. The conference is like 5 years old and is a mismosh of teams who have no history. Creighton? Butler? Depaul? Xaiver?

I honestly thought there was a chance they could nuke SHU basketball towards the end of the gonzo era and beginning of williards time. Players moms fighting? Players robbing houses? Players showing up at teammates houses with guns literally threatening to kill them? Dui’s. SHU basketball just a short number of years ago made the worst of RU football look like nuns.

Their players are more consistent. Powell gets everyone to play a little more relaxed. Seriously, take Powell away and you basically have Rutgers. It’s a good roster, but they get max potential because of someone like Powell. I like Geo Baker a lot, but replace Baker with Powell and we win by double digits today. Powell is a playmaker who is almost never stopped. Check out his game log. Right now we have guys who aren’t quite primary scorers.

You're a moron do some research. Butler made back to back national championships and plays in one of the most historic venues in basketball. Creightom draws 18000 a game Xavier is a perennial tournament team DePaul is down but has history

Again, I’m comparing our tradition to there’s. For a program with very little tradition, I don’t think I’m crazy saying they have more.

I’d be crazy if I said they have a lot of tradition, but compared to RU...yes they do.

I TOTALLY agree, totally and completely. But my point was that this aint some histortic conference. This conference was created out of thin air in desperation. Its a pretty good conference too. But to say it has history and tradition? It’s like calling your girlfriend your wife after dating for a month

It’s coaching. They outperform and we underperform.

They stayed the course with a good coach. Remember several years back people were making fun of their recruiting, they only recruit the Canary Islands? They kept the faith in the coach, he brought in a few assistants that started to help him get much better players.

Also, they seems to always have a decent, good, great point guard, from Shaheen, Andre Barrett, Copeland on down. Multiple guys that can shoot and score, better handle, and more mobile bigs for the most part.

We have to stay patient with coach Pikiell, hopefully he will get that program changing recruiting class and things will take off.

I knew this year was going to be a struggle, and some of our recent games have been hard to accept, but I am still hopeful that we have the right coach, just have to stay the course.

If it wasn't for hope, what do we as Rutgers have?

Coaching has very little to do with your team shooting 2-19 behind the arc today. The difference between ru and SHU is one player. That’s how basketball is.
Wrong. We played Columbia today. Shouldn’t need all the 3s to win. Compared to Columbia and Fordham, We don’t need “one player”.

You picked our two worst games to their two best games, it is not an apples to apples comparison.

BE ain’t no historic conference? Sometimes it’s better to be silent and thought a fool than to post something idiotic and remove all doubt.

The big east wasnt formed out of thin air 5 years ago. Reorganization yes

You wonder why your program sucks. For one you fans dont know shit

Willard is a better coach than most people...I'm not talking just Rutgers fans either...give him credit for. Having said that, out coaching Mark Turgeon isn't too difficult.
