Why is Seton Hall so good?

His point is that New Brunswick isn’t exactly a happening spot. But that’s a bit disingenuous. If you’re in college, New Brunswick is a really good place to get get laid in NJ. Manhattan, not so much. If that’s what you’re after. Of which, many are. Hoboken is good too.

Nah, they dont have much history or tradition. They made the final 4 in 89 and had a nice season in ‘91. Theres not much history and tradition. Ive never admitted this on here before today but I was an enormous seton hall fan until I enrolled at RU in 2010. It honestly really took me until like 2014 to fully convert. Few followed SHU bball as close as me from about ‘98 to 2014.

I honestly dont know how theyre attracting talent to South Orange. The campus is a disaster and it’s dead, it is truly a commuter school. I was a huge seton hall and wouldnt even apply to the school. Their facilities suck, they play at the rock, their fanbase is kinda weak, the school academically aint great, they have had ONE dude drafted since 2001 and that was a 2nd rounder in Whitehead so its not like theyre an nba breeding ground. I dont get it

I agree - I lived a block away from Seton Hall and didn't even consider going there. I commuted to Rutgers instead!

Seton Hall is good, and a tourney team, but, IMO, the entire Big East is badly underrated in the polls.

SHU is the real deal. Just watched their game vs Xaiver. Reason theyre good is not rocket science, they are a very talented team. They have 3 guards as good and better than Geo in powell, mcknight and cale.

If only there was a house party.

Again, good bball team, not a school that would be an attractive option to most college kids. Both these statements can be true guy

You are clueless. Their tradition is long and impressive. They were a top 20 team in the 40's and 50's including a National Championship in 1953 and a team that came one whistle away from winning it all in 1989.

My man. Im 28 and grew up less than 5 miles from SHU. For anyone under 30 which btw includes todays recruits do you think we even know about, let alone care about the 40’s and 50’s? I say this as a guy who grew up a rabid seton hall fan and went to tons of games at continental growing up. This is the first ive ever heard of their prowess in the 40’s and 50’s. It’s like saying Pitt Football is known as a national powerhouse

And the tradition that is Ru athletics is what? The women's Team I guess. A lot of what you say is correct. But in the suburbs neither the hall nor ru make anyone's Dream list. Nova leaves both in the dust. Many more as well.

If you’re a fan of a team you should know a little bit about their history.

If you grew up going to Seton Hall games, you should know that they were once one of the best teams in the country, and in fairness, blew it in a point shaving scandal.

If you’re a Rutgers fan, you should know all about 1976, and about Lloyd and Co. in the 60s.

It’s the same with any team you follow. I can’t imagine Yankees fans not knowing about their past, or even Knicks fans not knowing about the late 60s/early 70s. If you care that much about a team, age shouldn’t be an excuse in knowing about their past.

I guess you're not a former "rabid" Seton Hall fan. More like a fan who started watching a local college basketball team. Is Seton Hall's great teams of the 40s and 50s important to recruits and potential fans today? No not at all. However, fans of the team can appreciate that history. Winning a national title is huge no matter when it happened. Everything that Walter Dukes had to put up with especially playing games in the South. Nick Werkman in the early 60s having 2000pts and 1000 rebounds in only 71 games. Which is the fewest games ever to do that. Then there was the point shaving scandal which essentially put Seton Hall in the dark ages until a man named PJ Carlisemo put them back on the map. Again none of this matter to recruits of today. They want TV exposure and an opportunity to showcase themselves. But as a fan I do appreciate history no matter when it happened.
I love the Rutgers SHU rivalry games. Having both schools being good is better than either school being bad. Rutgers looks like they finally are on the right track. A few more pieces and they will be right there in the B1G. Hopefully you guys too can come out of the dark ages and revive a dormant fan base. It just takes time.

It's just upsetting when people trash another school. Rutgers and Seton Hall are two completely different environments. Each has benefits and each has downsides. Yet reading ignorant comments is just silly. The discussion is about basketball not which school is better to party at.

Good luck for the rest of the season see you guys next year!

Who cares about the 40's and 50's?

Plus, they don't even have a football team. Boring campus (I was on my HS track team, we practiced at times in their bubble...)

So you were a self-loathing South Oranger, and then commuted to New Brunswick 45 minutes each way in your dad's Country Squire, so what?

The bubble has been gone for about 40 years, so it's clear you're not familiar with the current state of the campus.

The philosophical question here would be: is it better to have no football team, or one that brings embarrassment and shame to the University on a regular basis?

Are you a Rutgers fan?

Not a regular basis, just the past 3 years.

Nah. Guidos aren’t a protected class! But it is a funny irony to many of us that a Seton Hall undergrad and who knows maybe a commuter student directs ur athletics hopes. Must keep you wondering. Have a Merry Christmas Go Hobbs!!!

Remember, some RU fans actually believe Italy has no history or tradition

Then there was the point shaving scandal which essentially put Seton Hall in the dark ages until a man named Fred Gruninger put them back on the map.

FIFY. Before PJ, while Raftery was still coach, it was the Rutgers AD who gifted SHU continued relevance by turning down Rutgers' invite to the Big East that was then extended to SHU.

Spent a great deal of time at SHU 84-90. They were in the FINALS not just the final 4. Great team remember them well and worked out with some of the players when i was with my boys. They were my favorite team up until a few yrs back....actually played intramural ball against Anthony Avent when he prop 48'd all 6'2 of me gad to cover 6'10 of him.
Between John Morton's clutch shots, Gerald Green"s high dribbling, Gaze and his 3 pters, Bryant a beast down low, Katsikas shooter...these guts just played really well together. They had a great run 31-7 if i remember. Remember going to Cryan's in SO for the champ game and it being so crowded 5 hrs before the game you could not move. 3 TV crews in there...if you went to take a leak it took 1/2 to get back to spot. We bailed on wayching game there and came back home to local har much more pleasant....great game
