Why the pitiful passing attack?

The lack of any WR progression as season goes forward is eye opening. NONE of the young WRs have improved in route running, finding open space. This combined with HORRIBLE play calling by Kill(hurts to say this because i respect Coach Kill) has this offense going backwards.Jafar Williams..whats going on Coach? Please go back to coaching the running backs.

TWO WR Targets the WHOLE game.
217 total offense..74 of that was on one running play.
87 yards passing?
six straight three and outs on offense in second half..

Basically this year Kill is attempting to #1 not put the qbs in situations where they are more likely to turn the ball over. Our protection on passing downs looks ok on some plays but others the qb is running for his life. When the protection is better the qb can go through his progressions without the fear he is about to get obliterated. As we get more talent into the program and the young talent we do have gains experience and size and strength I expect we will get more aggressive.

Also the bad part of simplifying the offense is we will be more predictable.

This year is about not turning the ball over and killing our defense

Below average passing QBs, way below average WRS, and average at best O line = poor passing attack

Same thing happened against Illinois last week.
After Bailey’s catch in the 1st Qtr last week, I don’t think a Rutgers WR caught a Pass the rest of the game.
Unbelievable.

This particular version of the power spread isn't a sophisticated passing offense. Throwing the ball effectively in this offense requires a strong running game, and in this offense, that means having a QB that is a willing, effective runner. When the QB run option isn't there, this offense becomes very easy to defend. We saw this with Ohio State against Michigan and Clemson. They have all the talent in the world, but when they played against those defenses, their offense looked like ours.

Not saying Kill is a great playcaller but eventually you have to come to the conclusion the players just aren’t good enough. Look at where top recruiting has gotten PSU over the past few years and look where the exact opposite has taken us. Remember we were basically even in 2014. Think about that for yourself. When people try to ignore stars and defend every single ‘diamond in the rough’ it just leaves me speechless. I don’t get it.

Just from watching games in the upper deck you can easily see there are issues in the play calling.

All too often the WRs are running routes that bunch them all up together instead of clearing space out for someone to make a play.

When the defense puts 9 guys in the box, and you never attempt playaction you're just making the job even easier for them. Yes running sets up the pass, but if you never attempt to call pass plays that take advantage of what the running game has set up, it's useless.

I guess we need another qb change--back to Bolin to satisfy the experts

Exactly!!!! its the coaches, not the kids
Not banging on the coaches. Love Ash. Kill is a solid coach to lead O but we didn’t have a killer instinct in the fourth qtr. RU could have put the nail on the coffin early in the 4th of yesterday’s game with another score but RU went run, run, short pass and the defense pinned its ears back because of pattern. One or two more Purdue catches and we’re having a different discussion today. Again, love our coaches but not thrilled about the game plan going down the stretch of yesterday’s game with plenty of time left on the clock for Purdue to come back. Bottom line: we got the W.

GO RU

Better get more creative against Mchigan next week or we w/o' t have a chance They won't drop balls like Purdue.

Stop with the RU oline sucks bullshit. Our rushing numbers for the first seven games have been the following:

131
128
326
68
117
274
130

Those rush numbers overall are quite respectable. Five linemen in to block eight defensive guys that know you’re going to run. Good luck with that. The greater offensive problems in my opinion are the playcalling, qb play and wrs. Quite frankly the oline went into a hole to damn early in this game even with the understanding of Kill’s gameplan to milk the play clock. Purdue dropped an enormous amount of passes and our defense came up with big plays to make up for the shortsighted plays called. RU needed to score one more time not to risk losing this game in the final seconds or overtime.

Glad as hell we got the W.

GO RU

You are just wrong.

I didn't read any of the thread, but who cares? We need to win! And we did. That's all that matters right now to sustain our recruiting so we can build upon this going forward.

Ya, but PSU is the #2 team in the country. We meanwhile can't get over a 100 yards passing anymore.

So yes talent matters, but we have more talent that what we are seeing on offense.

Fans will say crazy things and over react both in the positive and negative direction, that's just the way it is. Just look at Jimbo Fisher and some FSU fans yesterday calling for new coaches. This is a national championship coach and has been winning well there for some time, not just a fluke.

That being said, this place is a fan message board for fans to express their opinions whichever way they feel. This is exactly why this place exists as well as being a greater RU community. As long as it's civil, I couldn't care less what any of us "joe nobodies" posts. If someone posts "here's what I think here's why I think it," what's the problem? You debate back and forth.

I never get this bashing each other for no reason or trying to pigeon hole hundreds/thousands of different people and personalities to all march in lock step.

Not to this extent.
Says who? Arm chair qb? Kill already said he planned on making things simple because the players couldn't execute right. I mean that flat out was said publicly. In gonna go ahead and trust a former big ten head coach in that assessment. If it were boy wonder from last year, ok fine but this is kill...hes been around the block

Kill's offense was completely bailed out by the defense yesterday.

I understand Kill is a coach, but we've all seen coaches, even good ones, make bad decisions

You know what might not be a bad idea if we have some budget for it or can fundraise for it. I don't know how many schools of our status have them but I know many of the better schools go around and scooping up all these ex coaches as "consultants" to put on their staffs. Say if a Kliff Kingsbury type HC were fired or some top OC from a team where the HC got fired. Sonny Dykes is a "consultant" on the TCU staff after being let go at Cal. There are others I've named that I can't remember off the top of my head.

I tend to think on the high end it might cost 400K or so but I think it could be beneficial. Some of these guys will be getting "leftover" pay too so money might not be as much an issue as staying involved in the game. You also have a replacement on hand for the next year should Kill have any health issues.
