Honest question: When I watch GW I see a strong athlete with a big arm. Is that what people mean when they say his “talent is undeniable,” or are they seeing something more? I don’t.

Generally when people say that it means “well they had 4 stars in high school so I know he is talented” as you watch them struggle at the college level. The majority of people have no clue but know that since the kid was a prized recruit he must have talent. Christian Hakenberg should be the poster child for this.

Wimsatt was able to dominate in HS based on pure talent and athleticism. Now in the B1G he needs to develop more of a football IQ if he’s going to shine.

“Football IQ” comes from reps and in game experience. Period. He’s got 2 more live action games to get that experience. This will pay dividends next year… plus another off season in film study and weight room.

I’m not by any means a QB expert but i see a guy that can do things that not many other QB’s are doing. I watch a lot of games. I think he has a chance to have a really good career for us. If you cannot see that it’s fine but then you should refrain from your daily criticism of players on both boards.

I see improvement every week with this kid and think his future is bright.
So does pretty much every commentator, and it does not seem that they are just blowing smoke.

Going into yesterday's game, Gavin had 69 passing attempts this season. This was his second true start this season after coming back from being injured. To anyone questioning his talent, let that sink in.

By way of comparison, and I am not suggesting Gavin is as talented as Taulia at Maryland, Taulia had 7 TDs and 7 INTs his first full year in 2020. In one of his early games, he had a 47% completion percentage, 0 TDs and 3 INTs. And this was after he spent a full year at Alabama.

Clemson's QB, DJ Uiagalelei, had 9 TDs and 10 INT in his first full year of starting as a sophomore, and 5 games in which his completion percentage was below 50%.

Devin Leary took lumps in his first year as starter at NC State, with a 48% completion percentage.

Just what is the OP expecting at this point?

One thing that makes a talented, inexperienced, QB look like a dud, is an OL that isn't very good.
Actually , yesterday the O line became much better as the rotation had Asamoah and Zilinskas inserted into it. It was good run blocking and pass blocking could have been considered good had Gavin been able to avoid some of the 3 sacks near the end . I will still stick with 7-8 wins for next year and a BOWL GAME bid. And no not a bowl like our BC ‘s QB quote once made headlines with.

Agreed. Asamoah was not highly recruited and had a short offer list. Kudos to him and the coaches on his early development and getting out on the field. He looked really good yesterday, and hope he finishes strong this season.

I honestly feel with the influx of recruited HS lineman the past 2 years and the addition of Portal transfers and the year of development under Augie Hoffman will will begin to see continued growth. The next step in the progression is the penalties need to be cut in half or less and there in lies the answer. Yesterday 3-4 of the holding penalties were tickytack in nature while several others were just dumb bone head miscues :… especially on the kicking team coverages. No excuses… some were related to overall athletic inabilities of a player. That is why players lose their positional battles.

He’s got a great arm, has great mechanics, is great in the pocket, and is mobile.

As the game continues to slow down for him he’s going to start taking over. He’s pretty much as good as you’re gonna get from a Freshman.

Excited for next year.

My only knock on GW is that he needs to be a more willing runner.
Or allowed to be. Many of us here believe that the staff has put the reins on him because we have no real backup QB so they don’t want to risk injury. Next year, if they get a better backup QB we should see him run more (I hope).

That is what many are forgetting having a top QB makes the HC look so much better as does surrounding him with the pieces to run a productive offense. The Head guy can get away making the mistakes all us sideline coaches attribute our poor performances to . This player reads , looks, processes and has the physical parts down . Tom Savage was the last kid I ever said to people ( former players and long time alums) sitting with us . “ This kid just looks the part .” Tom Savage had it not been for all the distractions would have been a legend at Rutgers. The puzzle I see coming about and that isn’t just some line of BS from Schiano . It is now the time to upgrade the offense for young Gavin Wimsatt.

My suggest would be to watch Gavin pre injury and post injury.

He looked pretty awful against Wagner. The interception he threw in that game was on a roll out to the right where he tried to throw across his body back to the middle of the field. Same with Int vs Wake Forest in the bowl game.

Now look at his game post injury. Minnesota. Not good, bad INT trying to squeeze ball in. 1H vs Michigan - very solid no mistakes. Freshman mistakes in second half when they pinned their ears back and brought pressure like he has never seen before that made him uncomfortable.

Yesterday - played a very solid game and put us in enough of a position where we could have won. No mistakes (INT) and two very solid touchdown throws. Where there some things he could have done better? Sure. But for essentially a true Freshman QB he played a very solid game and one that can absolutely boost his confidence. He looked very confident and in command the second half. He absolutely is improving and seems to be LEARNING from his mistakes - i.e yesterday he ran a little bit more when he saw open field on his roll outs. He showed a lot more touch on passes. And he isnt trying to force throws back into the middle of the field like he had in the past

Have asked before but why no talk of Allen the hs #1 NJ player? With all the struggles one would think he might use some of those 4 free games to get used to game speed to make the off season more relevant.

Hackenberg had all the tools to be a good NFL qb. Solid back up @ the very least. But, he had shit coaching that set him back a bunch.
Good kid from a good family. A conversation with him would be an eye opener to most here about how things really work and the people involved.

I don't understand how anyone can be negative on Wimsatt after yesterday, when he threw two touchdown passes and didn't turn the ball over. Of course he has a long way to to, but he's obviously getting there. As for his not running, the best explanation is that he's not completely over his injury; his ankle is heavily taped.

He looks great for a true freshman not named Lamar Jackson.

Waiting for all the board geniuses (troll fam) to indicate that they may have been wrong for the last few months with their GW posts...

Now imagine Wimsatt was doing this against BC and Temple?
Instead of looking to the sideline and running off the field after every play.

By the time we get to MSU he is likely much better than he was yesterday.

Alternatively, we could still be starting Vedral like many wanted - then Wimsatt is making these mistakes next year against NW, Temple and VT.

This is why some of us were saying Vedral never should have been in contention to start.
No Langan snaps.
Pick a QB and let them play and develop.
Give them full practice reps each week and stop the QB shenanigans.

Use this year to plan for the future.

“Football IQ” comes from reps and in game experience.

Not only that. You also need film study, the ability to correct your mistakes in practice, a QB coach who not only can identify mistakes but help you correct them, etc.

We need that coach. A prime example was Nova making the same mistakes in his 3rd year, i.e., intentional grounding, illegal forward pass, etc. Once Ralph Friedgen was here, those mistakes disappeared his senior year.

Talent is making throws other other QBs can’t. Evading pass rush our other QBs can’t. QB stuff
I've been getting more and more excited to see Wimsatt's progression each game since he came back from his injury. MN was not great, although we dropped 5-6 passes that could've changed the game (we were only down 14-0 in the 4Q), then UM featured a great first half by Gavin, but a poor 2nd half when UM put on relentless pressure, and then Gavin had his best game yesterday, playing good enough for us to win, if we had executed better (especially penalties and on D). Would love to see us be competitive with PSU (we can be if we play clean) and win at MD (possible) and if we can get more playmakers for next year, I think we can turn the corner.

With regard to making throws many other QBs can't, including the other ones on RU most importantly, look no further than the TD GW threw on 3rd and 11 on the last drive (before the Hail Mary TD), when he was flushed out to his left by the rush and with two defenders in his face, while continuing to move left and a bit backwards, he somehow fired a perfect back shoulder strike over 30 yards in the air to Ryan in the endzone. Holding negated that gorgeous TD pass. At the 27 minute mark in the highlights below - where one can see several other superb throws by Wimsatt.

There are a lot of people who watch football and don’t understand the concept of “development”. Because Wimsatt was a 4 star recruit, people expect him to come in and be a top QB immediately. It doesn’t work that way. He needs coaching and playing experience. He has a great arm and is elusive and a very good athlete. He is improving. I expect him to be a much better player next season.

While coaching needed improvement from Saturday I think it’s safe to say that the defense is serviceable. Special teams are serviceable. Offense has been our real thorn. The defense cannot be on the field for 40+ min.
Right now, I think the problems are slowly but steadily getting crossed off the list. Wimsatt is good enough. Receivers, TE need to improve. A better Sam brown return. Better pass protection.

better defensive line pressure and better linebacker play and the team can get to middle of the pack. That will be the greatest challenge. Get to middle of the pack big ten and get over the hump. After that anything’s possible.

Wimsatt paired with Brown/Monangi in the backfield and a more experienced OL will be fun to watch next few years. Just need to get him some WR/TE help. We need a Sean Ryan type for the next 2yrs.

Who is the kid out of Hillside we recruited and if a freshman? Can he be a WR?

Gav needs for the game to slowdown for him and once that happens, he will begin to show who he is

I think he showed a big step forward in the MSU game. Believe this will continue the next 2 weeks. The OL showed improvement in opening holes for Kyle. Loss was primarily caused by penalties, real and unfair and some coaching decisions. If we can find 2 Sean Ryan types for next year , you have to believe our Offense will be much better. In 2 years we will transition into something other than B1G East Division.

This right here. Stars ≠ immediate success.

Look no further than Quinn Ewers. Has 2-3x the amount of talent around him than us and yesterday he was 17/39, 170 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT.

Development is so crucial. It is a statistical fact that Gavin has gotten better each game this year. Eye test says so as well

The kid is very talented and I can live with his mistakes. But as I said in the game thread yesterday. You can now see why Gleeson was let go. There was little improvement in that QB room. Simon,Vedral and Wimsatt do not see the whole field very well. Hopefully we hire a true coordinator that can teach the talent in that room. I think Wimsatt has the ability to be special.

Most college spread offenses don't require qbs to read the whole field. Just half.

I would hardly call anything Rutgers run as a spread offense. And was speaking of anything beyond initial read(check downs secondary options) not specifically parameters of the field.
