Wrestling Weekend: Clarion, Gardner-Webb, Kent State

Agreed. I think losing donny and seabass really has taken a toll on him. My biggest concern is that if he all americans this year and graduates in May,with the one year of eligibility, he ends up leaving. I don't understand why we can't get a couple.More middle and lower weight top flight coaches? By the way,why did Leo leave?
I thought somebody with more familiarity with the program would answer this. My recollection is that they needed to open a coaching spot for AA and that Leo was then moved over to head up SKWC. Then I guess Leonardis decided to move on after serving in that role for a certain amount of time. I don't remember how long.

Seabass was 15-20 pounds heavier than Shawver which is why they did not work. Seabass worked with the 41-49-57-65 pounders as until he went to the Olympics
Elite wrestlers such as Rivera typically wrestle up because wrestling smaller guys does nothing for them. Not a direct comparison because it’s a different sport but Khabib would wrestle with guys approaching with heavyweights because the size offset the advantage he had in skill.

So by that comparison, could Shawyver not have been wrestling up slightly against Rivera to get better?

Shawver absolutely could have benefitted from it, but again, Rivera was a lone wolf who wanted to do his own thing.
I keep hearing this “lone wolf” thing. I’m not asking then to share a milkshake at Thomas sweets. Or be part of the same book club. I want iron to sharpen iron. The best wrestlers to trains, drill, roll, Spar, play wrestle together in practice. Whatever. To make our wrestlers better. It feels like malpractice by a coaching staff to have a world medalist in the room and not have him rolling with one of your potential AAs. That isn’t that dramatically different in size. Its not like Gable Stevenson rolling with a 33lber. When I hear they NEVER praticed together by our resident eye witness, it makes me scratch my head

I agree. I was unaware that they never rolled together but it doesn’t surprise me hearing stories about Rivera. He’s not a bad kid or anything but everything I heard is that he was disconnected from the rest of the team, similar to Suriano but with a more charismatic personality.

From my own experience wrestling with upper weight guys had little to know benefit.Thats just me. Did I roll around with upper weight guys...yes.But bigger wrestlers never gave me the feel I needed as lower weight guys were more " slick" and had alot more forward momentum. None of these guys could prepare you for a Barry Davis.Rivera is a great kid. I knew his dad Steve when he was a kid.Tough, tough dude who probably could have AA'd in D 1. Back in the early 80s we has a ton of guys in D3 that made or could have made noise at D1 Nationals. The Monacos,Pete the Greek from Montclair State just to name a few. That was when you won A D3 title you could wrestle at D1 NCAAs.

Did anyone think of the fact that DS was back in Ohio wrestling in front of friends and family and just maybe the pressure of having to perform got him tensed up and he had a bad day?
I didn't post it, but def thought this. I think he's feeling the pressures of being a big10 champ too. There's a lot of high expectations. People are expecting him to major or pin everyone. It's tough to do. He'll be fine IMO

This he will be fine IMO, has been posted after every next season slump our better wrestlers have had… I been trying to think why they haven’t been able to jump to the next lvl the following season, or even stay on par from previous season, could it be the extra pressure from last year success?? If that’s the case stop telling everyone you will be x and putting all this imaginary bs pressure on urself..

A lot of this sport is mental… gotta find that child like mindset of wrestling to have fun, to improve.. f the pressure.. as long as can go 100% effort every match and have fun there is no pressure.

The kid who beat him has only lost to the VT kid and twice to the nationally ranked West Point kid by fall and then 9-6 in the finals of the Black Knight tourney. So he is no fish. He has been majoring and tech falling everyone else

Certainly had a bad day. I would think the B1G tournament finals and NCAA semis would have been more stressful. I think he got handled by a surprisingly quick and stronger wrestler.
