RAPID REACTION — Purdue

Nice game by Grant. He adds value. Criminal investigation has been requested for his lack of minutes prior to last game.

Dylan at 80% tonight? The flu kicks asses.

If Painter coaches RU this year, we are a tourney team.

As a fan of basketball, I really enjoy watching Wisconsin and Purdue play.

We are gonna be in a fight to make the B1G tournament.

From here on out, anyone that talks about what we need to do to make the NCAA tourney needs to be escorted to a mental institution.
Agree except for the “if Painter coaches” part. Purdue recruits an entirely different type of player: they all pass, shoot well, find open players and make each other better. Basketball Fundamentals.

Pike recruits athletes and length. Our guys have different skills and wouldn’t be capable of the Purdue offense. Fundamentals and team play not a roster construction consideration.

We have always been an iso ‘make a play’ offense because the players don’t have the other abilities.

So no, Painter wouldn’t change the skills our players have.

Rage research

From my rage research, and given the talk about how pike deserves infinite rope because of RU’s past, a couple of fun stats

*In the KenPom era*

Pikiell has now lost consecutive conference home games by 12+ points in three-straight seasons. That has happened one time in Rutgers history, sort of, a five-year stretch between 2007-11.

Pikiell is at risk of losing three consecutive home conference games by 12+ points in a single season. that’s happened just twice in Rutgers history, predictably during the 2016 Eddie Jordan season and in an acutely bad Fred Hill year.

While Pike might be the most successful coach of that era, he’s neutered the RAC in recent years in a way only few have managed

The Sad Truth

Let me first caveat that I hope this post ages poorly...

That being said, this season is actually worse than most people realize in that in addition to watching a terrible team take the court, we're also watching Pike's career die. I had posted before the season even began that this was going to be the most important season of Pike's career - not just because he had a mega-hyped team with 3 future lottery picks, but because whether he wanted to admit it or not his career would be banking on the outcome.

If things went the way we thought, Pike would finally have that one thing he could lean on to elevate the program year in and year out - namely he could win with one and dones and move players into the NBA as high draft picks. If he does that, I truly believe the flood gates open and we start to be in conversation with a higher caliber recruit each year.

I had feared though if things didn't work out (and there was some concern before the season due to roster construction and the fact that Rutgers is gonna Rutgers), that this would be the end of Pike and the end of the Pike era at Rutgers. There's just no way any top-level recruit comes here - even with connections - after this debacle. It's just too easy for any other coach to look at a recruit and say, "You don't want to go to Rutgers. You'll be miserable. You won't win and you won't develop. Hell, Pike couldn't even win with two lottery picks, and honestly they were lottery picks before they even got to Pike. You could argue he actually stunted their growth."

And the sad part is that they wouldn't be wrong. I bet you RHS is thinking what could've been if Dylan went to Duke.

I like Pike. He's a good dude, but he blew it and he probably knows that. He's too loyal. He too trustworthy. There's no accountability. Hell, B Knight has been in charge of the offense for how many seasons and it's consistently been one of the worst in D1. No chance he'd be running the O if I were coach.

There's no shot that the younger Dercack comes here or any high-ranking recruit for that matter moving forward. Pike will revert back to what he knows. We'll have a lower/middle-of-the-pack team that is gritty and fun to root for, but I don't know if that's enough in this new era. I'd expect Pike to stick around a few more seasons before heading off into the sunset.

OT (Updated): The Saturday 1/11 Event Now Looking Like <1" with a Whiff Possible on the Low Side and 1-2" Possible on the High Side

This one is close to over for the chance of more than 1" of snow, with almost the entire region now listed at <1" and most of the area is expected to get <1/2" and it's possible some areas will see nada. We're 42 hours out from the start of precip in the wee hours of Sat morning, so some minor to modest changes are still possible and a couple of models are still showing ~1" of snow (with up to 2" in spots) , so while 1-2" is unlikely it's still possible, just like a complete whiff is, but about 1/2" or so is looking most likely for most. That would be a non-event - for me 1" or more is where "minor" starts, especially when temps are cold and any snow would accumulate, which is the case with this event, where temps will be <32F through late morning.

So with the 4 pm update, the NWS is now predicting 5 times as much snow for CNJ! They went from 0.1" in Somerville to 0.5" in Somerville, lol. Amounts did obviously go up a bit to 1/2"-1" for most of the area and 1-2" for SENJ (Atlantic/Cumberland/Cape May) and southern DE, but this is still a nuisance storm for most...although there is now a bit better chance for areas N of 276/195 to move from nuisance to minor with 1-2", as we're still 36 hours from the event (relative to the 18Z models which had 1 pm EST data inputs) and some minor changes are still possible. A whiff (<0.5", IMO) is still possible, too. Anywhere that gets more than about 1" will have slick roads, as the precip will likely fall from about 2 am to 10 am with temps in the 20s, although highs in the mid-afternoon will likely make it to the low/mid-30s.
