GAME 16 PURDUE: I don't care anymore

For those of you who like RU Hoops to get you through the winter, we now go from Jan 10 to Feb 1 for our next game at the RAC!

Great scheduling for the fans. Good way to get out of a slump too.

Glad our AD was on top of things.

our AD doesn’t do the conference schedule so not sure what you’re angry about the ad for

GAME 16 PURDUE: I don't care anymore

Why wouldn't we want to at least try? We KNOW these players aren't good enough. Might as well take a shot at the unknown and potential to improve the roster
You can feel that way but he lost me. I think he’s a terrible coach, perhaps the worst in the league. It takes him years to build a team and the college basketball. Environment has changed. You can’t invest time developing players for multiple years when they switch teams with ease now. It’s a sales job first now, and x and o job next. Developing players is way down on the list with NIL and the transfer portal. He’d make a good defensive assistant coach but he’s a dinosaur as a head coach. He could also do well at a lower level or mid major where development is more important.

In his earlier years that was true but he's recruiting at a different level now

Yes, Purdue recruited three-star players in the 2022 men's basketball class. The players were:

  • Braden Smith
A 6' point guard from Westfield High School in Indiana, Smith was named Indiana Mr. Basketball in 2022.

  • Camden Heide
A 6'5" small forward from Wasatch Academy in Utah, Heide was the third-ranked player in Minnesota.

  • Fletcher Loyer
A guard who was ranked in the top 100 in the nation by recruiting services.

  • William Berg
    A 7'1" center from Sweden

Those days are gone. There is no more "developing" a program. It's all about how well a coach does recruiting in the transfer portal.
That's why Jay Wright, Tony Bennett, and Laranaga all called it quits.
This new era is not what Pike was cut out for.

1000% agree..which is why he’s struggling with 2 top 5 picks.

The old way can still work with the right approach - especially in basketball

GAME 16 PURDUE: I don't care anymore

Pike's "way" is of a prior era - he needs to change a lot about his way of doing things to succeed in the current era. He's had success in the past finding the value guys that are better than their HS ratings and coaching them up over years... but that style is rapidly going extinct.

Those value guys you bring in will be looking at overvalued NIL promises from other schools pretty quickly and will likely cost you more to keep developing than it would to bring in guys who already cut their teeth elsewhere. Every year you need to rebuild a team from scratch unless you have overflowing coffers to retain all the guys you want to retain, which we most certainly do not.

The "pounding nails" culture of defense, where new guys slot into gaps between veterans steeped in the culture and system.... that's not going to work anymore. Coaches in this era need concepts that can be quickly understood and internalized by coming-in-cold-off-the-street players that don't even really know each other's names on the first day of camp. You can't rely on any year-over-year carry over - and the guys you do have will quickly look at greener pastures if you make their lives too uncomfortable.

Pike needs to do a lot of introspection this offseasons.

Agree with this.. but this way csn still work with the right roster.

This way doesn’t work with 2 top 5 lottery picks,

Get back to what got pike success here for next season. Under the radar guys that care about the program and not their own brand

Who cares?? Pikiell is a coach that develops and doesnt need star recruits. His best seasons heave been with under the radar guys, that’s what he will need to get back to

It’s ridiculous you claimed he “gutted our program”.

Pike would probably be happier at a small program where he could still coach that way. It doesnt seem he is a good fit for the NIL free agency era unfortunately

RAPID REACTION — Purdue

I’ll destroy Davis- the last 2 games at home he’s been the primary reason for our slow starts on offense. Killed us going 0-3 and 1 turnover in 4 minutes vs Wisconsin

Tonight again turnovers early, and played 8 straight minutes, in fact, inexplicably he was the last starter taken out, even after being abused by Smith, all while not scoring or having an assist

Mind boggling that the staff thinks he brings any starter minute value. Davis wouldn’t Even be rostered on most big ten teams
Yup he wouldn’t be in any other B1G rotation. Can’t shoot, can’t pass, bad decision maker. His legs move quickly so it looks like he’s a good defender, but he’s small and gets abused a lot.

It's harder but you just need to recruit players that fit your system and culture every year in the portal

Pike went away from the Rutgers culture and now we have no team identity or team strength

What is this team's identity?

What does this team do well?
I can name a few things they do well…..they are able to be affected by the flu for 3 games, one is able to slip on the floor several times on a highly consistent basis game in game out, they can laugh and joke and have a good time regardless of the score, a team captain manages to provide leadership while playing absolutely no minutes on the floor, and we have a coach who claps real hard and throws his hands up over his shoulders to the crowd with great ferociousness. That’s all I got.

Heide was a 3 but point taken, I was going off of my conversation with a Purdue fan sitting next to me saying Painter isnt getting top recruits....Loyer was rated like 85th. Point is that compared to other top programs they are not relying on the big names....and even a few you listed there have been disappointments such as Morten and Furst . Edey was ranked 255th in the country
In his earlier years that was true but he's recruiting at a different level now
