GAME 16 PURDUE: I don't care anymore

You can feel that way but he lost me. I think he’s a terrible coach, perhaps the worst in the league. It takes him years to build a team and the college basketball. Environment has changed. You can’t invest time developing players for multiple years when they switch teams with ease now. It’s a sales job first now, and x and o job next. Developing players is way down on the list with NIL and the transfer portal. He’d make a good defensive assistant coach but he’s a dinosaur as a head coach.
You can believe all that... you want these players returning? He gets lucky with one or two in the portal and we are better off

Court Report: Rutgers could be first team to miss NCAA Tournament despite having two top-five NBA Draft picks

The entire article makes me want to puke, but this quote is especially galling:

"Dylan Harper's a [expletive] monster off middle pick-and-roll," an opposing coach told CBS Sports. "But they're not hard to guard. They don't run around. It's not like four or five people touch the ball and feel involved. If you want to be a good offensive team you have to weaponize the guys around them."
I've been saying that for alot of games. When guys are not in the flow or being passed to when they are open...they will more than likely force bad shots knowing if they pass the ball they will never see it again when they do get it. Get away from watching the ball and the 1v1 and watch everything else these guys are doing and you will see how awful it is...when you have 3 other guys out there whose soul purpose is to stay out of the way...does not make for a successful team.
RU promoted 2 guys and you are not winning with 2 guys it was a huge mistake. I'll say this again when you dont touch the rock in a meaningful role on the offensive side your effort is affected on the defensive side

I would take the trajectory of the program under Eddie Jordan than this dumpster fire that is visible to every college basketball fan nationwide.

Holy crap dude I lost you here. Did you even watch then?

We were one of the worst programs in all of D1 under Jordan.

There was no trajectory, we were rock bottom.

Put down the phone.

GAME 16 PURDUE: I don't care anymore

For those of you who like RU Hoops to get you through the winter, we now go from Jan 10 to Feb 1 for our next game at the RAC!

Great scheduling for the fans. Good way to get out of a slump too.

Glad our AD was on top of things.

our AD doesn’t do the conference schedule so not sure what you’re angry about the ad for

GAME 16 PURDUE: I don't care anymore

Why wouldn't we want to at least try? We KNOW these players aren't good enough. Might as well take a shot at the unknown and potential to improve the roster

He could also do well at a lower level or mid major where development is more important.

Only Rutgers

In his earlier years that was true but he's recruiting at a different level now

Heidi was a 4 star

Yes, Purdue recruited three-star players in the 2022 men's basketball class. The players were:

  • Braden Smith
A 6' point guard from Westfield High School in Indiana, Smith was named Indiana Mr. Basketball in 2022.

  • Camden Heide
A 6'5" small forward from Wasatch Academy in Utah, Heide was the third-ranked player in Minnesota.

  • Fletcher Loyer
A guard who was ranked in the top 100 in the nation by recruiting services.

  • William Berg
    A 7'1" center from Sweden

Those days are gone. There is no more "developing" a program. It's all about how well a coach does recruiting in the transfer portal.
That's why Jay Wright, Tony Bennett, and Laranaga all called it quits.
This new era is not what Pike was cut out for.

1000% agree..which is why he’s struggling with 2 top 5 picks.

The old way can still work with the right approach - especially in basketball

GAME 16 PURDUE: I don't care anymore

Pike's "way" is of a prior era - he needs to change a lot about his way of doing things to succeed in the current era. He's had success in the past finding the value guys that are better than their HS ratings and coaching them up over years... but that style is rapidly going extinct.

Those value guys you bring in will be looking at overvalued NIL promises from other schools pretty quickly and will likely cost you more to keep developing than it would to bring in guys who already cut their teeth elsewhere. Every year you need to rebuild a team from scratch unless you have overflowing coffers to retain all the guys you want to retain, which we most certainly do not.

The "pounding nails" culture of defense, where new guys slot into gaps between veterans steeped in the culture and system.... that's not going to work anymore. Coaches in this era need concepts that can be quickly understood and internalized by coming-in-cold-off-the-street players that don't even really know each other's names on the first day of camp. You can't rely on any year-over-year carry over - and the guys you do have will quickly look at greener pastures if you make their lives too uncomfortable.

Pike needs to do a lot of introspection this offseasons.

Agree with this.. but this way csn still work with the right roster.

This way doesn’t work with 2 top 5 lottery picks,

Get back to what got pike success here for next season. Under the radar guys that care about the program and not their own brand

Who cares?? Pikiell is a coach that develops and doesnt need star recruits. His best seasons heave been with under the radar guys, that’s what he will need to get back to

It’s ridiculous you claimed he “gutted our program”.

Pike would probably be happier at a small program where he could still coach that way. It doesnt seem he is a good fit for the NIL free agency era unfortunately
