I've been watching closely through the exhibition and first three games and am concerned about the same thing. I'll try to reserve judgement for now, but the staff needs to do better. There's talent (and numbers) on the roster now, but I hope we can keep it.

The current style of play is more like a pickup game that won't hold up against real competition. I'm not convinced by the gaudy numbers. Share the ball, ball movement, play some defense, make your free throws. Then I'll feel better.

Very nice of you to put Roy Hinson “in the conversation” with Lathan Sommerville and acknowledge that they were different types of players. I’m sure he’ll appreciate that. Sommerville is the type that has played one NCAA game against Wagner. Hinson is the type that went in the first round of the draft and played an 8-year NBA career during which he was once traded for the number one draft pick.

You dont know until they play though. Loved Lathan as a prospect, but everyone loved Gavin too who was a much higher rated player and turned out to be a complete bust. It happens. Even 5 stars bust. It happens. It's a risk. You don't know for sure until they actually play in college

In this day and age he may not stay his entire time here, at least we have him now, health is a risk for every player every position.
In the meantime we get to watch a special group of 3 frosh this year.

Really it can be boiled down to something as simple as there was no need for two of this archetype, and JMike was the younger one and friends with Ace. Derek had his chance to take his leap and failed. He played pretty good D last year but there was always a ceiling how effective he could be on that end due to his skinniness. JMike has a stronger build and was already stellar defensively as a freshman, something Derek was not. Also, even though not really backed up by stats yet but I just feel more comfortable out there with JMike, at least he showcases touch on layups and in the intrasquad scrimmage showcased a floater that I hope to see more of. Then the last thing is it seems people really gravitate towards JMike, where people seemed to not have much respect for Derek last year. Ultimately, JMike had the right connections and more willing to play the current role asked than Derek would have and he at least has a bit of upside to improve

I was extremely bullish on Lathan from the time we were recruiting him. Loved his game and skill set

What I said about this season was that it was extremely risky to go into the season with a true freshman and Ogbole at the 5 and wanted a proven portal 5. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we should be mitigating risk

Big men aren't typically great as freshman and Lathan might need time to adjust to B1G level bball. I was concerned Lathan needed to reshape his body, but he already made major strides there and almost wasn't recognizable with the fat he dropped

Ogbole was a project that needed a lot of development. Martini I thought could play some spot minutes at the 5 but worried his size would be a real problem in the B1G for extended minutes there.

If Lathan was ready from the jump and/or Ogbole makes a jump it could work out and we would be fine, but it was just too risky, especially if one gets hurt

But he's so good at rebounding, defense, passing. Perhaps his shooting needs work. But he's a special player IMO.

Pickell doesn’t make the same mistake twice,the housecleaning was appropriate, it’s still hard to believe Griffiths was such a bust.
