Should Schiano lighten up on the Cultural match ?

this thread / OP proves: it’s the off-season ;)

But as it’s not a ridiculous question I’ll weigh in….

OP - imho I think your post is a few years too late.

When Schiano 2.0 started (and we had NO talent/ depth) it would have been a very good question to ask whether he should roll the dice with some talented / but questionable kids to bolster the roster.

But now he really does seem to have a plan/ system in place to build up the roster in a long term/ sustainable way

I suppose your question is whether he should alter that to speed it up.

Again , not an absurd question imho.

But I think you’re getting an overwhelmingly consistent response to your question - seems the rest of us are happy to see where Schiano is gonna take this with the system he is employing.

maybe, just maybe, this approach will eventually result in Rutgers having a solid/ deep program.

As of right now there doesn’t seem to be a reason to doubt what Schiano is doing

we ALL wish it would happen overnight but seems those responding to your question (including me) see the direction he’s going and are willing to have a little more patience - it’s what Rutgers fans excel at ;)
It's funny- we all watched the first couple of years of GS 2.0 and even his biggest fans were kind of saying- Can he do it? A couple of years later- NIL happened, recruiting on a whole was still not where we wanted it. The team looked better and we saw a slight glimmer but, we were losing the NIL battle. Greg called us developmental and that he was going to spend his limited NIL on retention rather than portal and recruiting.
The NIL equation looked like it may make us linger for decades of being blah.

Then, either he figured it out or he had it right. And of course, we were all of a sudden swimming with the $20 mil money. Greg's recruiting has started to step up, product on the field looks much better- bringing in a top portal class while not losing the kids we want to stay.
It feels that we may have just climbed to the top of the hill and we may see things escalate very quickly from here. It feels like we were just chugging and would never get there but now it seems the next couple of steps forward, go faster then we ever imagined.

Pacheco NFL Firsts

no brainer.. not rooting for the Philly Pigeons... so hoping KC makes it 3 in row.
..but for Pacheco being injured and not used like he was in the past, think they will move on and avoid paying him more in future. That being said, I hope he winds up with the GIANTS and bring the prodigal son home to NJ. Can always hope, right?
he grew up in Vineland, home would be the Eagles for him

Post Mortem by Lion - Delayed, RU vs MSU

It's all guesswork. Grant had 5 boards in 23 minutes, Martini 2 in ten, pretty much the same rate. That three made Grant 1-6 on the game though.
I do agree that Pike has a weird habit of sitting guys after a made shot. I don't know if its to send them to the bench after a positive or what the thinking is.
Doubtful it is guesswork. Pike and staff decided 4 games ago that Dylan Grant should be the starter . Pike came to that conclusion slowly because his stubbornness thinking MARTINI was going to somehow help us. He has helped us in 1 game , Nebraska. He has been close to terrible with multiple games of 0 points , 0 offensive or defensive rebounds, 0 steals , 0 assists and of course 1-2 turnovers . The horrendous shooting from him , PJ and Acuff has torpedoed a number of games and turned wins into losses.
Obvious to anyone MSU was very athletic and Grant had the best chance against them as compared to Martini. Just an awful mistake.

Chris Ash to Notre Dame…done deal

Ash was a bust as a HC, but his DC skills made him look like he might be HC material and Rutgers took the chance.
Chris failed miserably and went to Texas as an analyst them moved up to the DC position.
The Texas D under him didn't compare to his time as the Buckeyes and he didn't return to the Longhorns the next season .
Ash hasn't been a DC since and I wonder why he's being considered ( if not hired already) instead of Freeman moving his DB Coach Mickens into the job.
Mike Mickens is considered an up and comer and destined to be a DC soon.
Ash has the DC position on his resume and had good Ds at OSU & Wisconsin
But as the Texas DC in 2020 his D was ranked #64 in total defense and he was gone the next season

In 2013, Chris Ash coached the secondary and served as the defensive coordinator for the Arkansas Razorbacks. During his one season with the Razorbacks, Arkansas' defense ranked #89 in total defense

OT: Sonoma State Dropping All Sports

My wife and son are both SSU grads. Not only did they drop all sports, some academic programs were also dropped, including my son’s major (Art History). The situation sucks, and it seems that SSU is a poorly run institution. I hope the university gets it act together soon.

FWIW, if anyone happens to vacation in Nor Cal, the Green Center is a truly great concert venue - especially sitting outside on the grass.

One other note, Sonoma State is similar to my undergrad school - Ramapo College.

Poor NIL is the biggest reason for our disappointing season

omg i totally forgot about AWill..another wasted spot...and you are right...Pike taking too many risks another red flag with EO, J Will and Fernandes all with injuries

Wasn't about taking risks at that point, it was a mad dash to salvage a roster: 'any port in a storm'. There was no one left in the portal when Spencer/Mulcahy hit the road that wasn't deeply flawed. At that moment, the portal was mostly a bare cupboard, and all we had at guard was Simpson (6-3), Davis (6-1), and Fernandes (5-11).

Post Mortem by Lion - Delayed, RU vs MSU

He sat him right after he made a 3 and sat Somerville right after he hit his post move . Again , why ? You said it was a 2 point game or even if it was 4 points. Then buried Grant on the bench for 8 minutes. Pike chose Martini and JMike. Couldn’t have been a worst decision. Grant could give you offensive rebounds , block some shots. Martini a zero.

The Pikiell Podcast - 1/27/2025

Pikiell is a great spokesman for Rutgers University,He took the blame for the team performance and kept talking about overcoming obstacles. The problem with 11 games remaining the roster doesn't have the players to overcome obstacles like Harper illness/injuries.Long scoring droughts are occurring too frequently. In the Michigan State game,Bailey.Derdack and a injured Harper scored 50 points .The team scored 74 minutes many of which occurred in the last minutes when the game was already decided.

Poor NIL is the biggest reason for our disappointing season

Can't take anyone serious who is bitching about our NIL situation while also saying they contribute zero. 5-10K doesn't matter? Are we serious right now? NIL battles are decided by thousands...not millions. Your donation could be the difference between getting the guy the coaches really want or having to settle for someone further down the line. Esp when you are talking with many fans giving smaller amounts.

Of course guys cutting big checks are preferred but it ALL matters. But hey you're all posting a ton of messages about how bad things are on a message board. You're doing your part. Can't ask for more outta you...

$5-10K donations are great - but very few people have that sort of disposable income to throw toward Rutgers athletics. The vast majority of people don't even have $5K in their savings account, let alone are able to part with that much for nothing in return. The number of Rutgers fans who are able to contribute on that tier or above is very small.

Most fans are able to chip in tens of dollars not thousands of dollars.

OT: Cold and Potentially Snowy Pattern Likely for Most of January

Yea, actually in Leland, just across the River from Wilmington. Are you playing golf in MB ?
Well due to back surgery last year I have only played 1 round in 3:years. That was last year in OIB. But I am bringing clubs to plan to get at least a round in.

We have friends who moved to Leland a couple years ago too.

Poor NIL is the biggest reason for our disappointing season

You're talking about mid-major players? YES
Do you feel that our player evaluations would be better with mid-major pickups without Bailey/Harper on the roster? OF COURSE 😀

Bailey/Harper needed a stable core around them...aren't they the core?

Did we get Acuff before or after he got hurt? i think after, but am not 100% here

Why would our player evaluations be better without Bailey/Harper on the roster? Our evaluation of Martini put him as a high priority target.... why would we have thought any differently about him if we had two rando HS players instead of Bailey and Harper?

No, Bailey/Harper can't be the core... they are the minority of the guys on the court at any time. For freshmen to truly excel, they need to have stable veterans around to bring them along... not be surrounded by other newbies. "This is where you fit in the press" and "in this set you need to be over there", etc. Instead, everyone was new - the only guy on the roster who came in with a full season of experience was Jamichael Davis. Swapping Bailey/Harper and our 4 portal guys for 2 HS randos and 4 different portal guys wasn't going to change that.

Acuff got hurt after he came to Rutgers.
