Rutgers wrestling: Four thoughts ahead of Big Ten Championships, NCAA Championships

The season started with talk of elevating program into top 10. some things haven't really aligned with that kind of finish but that seems ti be the standard Coach wants. Looks like 3 guys with legit shit to AA but I could see another 1 or 2 making a run. Hopefully everyone will be healthy(ish) for post season
For what it’s worth they ended the season ranked 11th.

They are a better dual team than a tournament team on paper, especially now without Poz, so I would expect a finish around 20-25 in the tournament scoring (which I’ve said numerous times is a pointless exercise). They won’t have a champion and might only have 1-2 AA’s which is about where they’ve been for a few years.

Progress isn’t a straight line. I think this years dual results, particularly beating Illinois and hanging neck and neck with Ohio St was indicative that the team is still trending in the right direction despite what some naysayers might say.

I still think it's ridiculous that kids don't play tackle football on the playground🤷
Kill the man with the ball would be a criminal offense now. I don't know how my generation of latch key kids, could possibly raise a generation so soft. We turned no parental supervision into wrapping our kids in bubble wrap.

Knox father arrested at state tourney match

So if going up in the stands and throwing punches doesn’t get you DQ then what does it take?
There’s arguments from both sides why it is and isn’t. Part of Knox’s side is arguing that he was no longer competing which makes him a spectator, and in the district tournament the “bench area” is mixed in with the rest of the crowd. As nonsensical as it sounds, from a legal standpoint it sounds like he’s right.

The other problem from the NJSIAA side is that it sounds that they made their decision to DQ him without giving him a chance to explain himself, which is a constitutional violation.

In essence, Knox’s actions are being excused on technicalities.

OT: Things in sports that need to disappear

How about a halftime studio crew worrying if a highlight of Michigan State will upset the "wolverine audience" ignoring at Rutgers fans watching the broadcast?

Broadcast crews tied to specific power teams in a conference so every broadcast sounds like a homer crew for one of the teams?

Officials worried about "being shown up," which would enable them to directly affect games while punishing free speech. F' you... you are not special. Your feelings need not be protected. Just replace those powers with the power to punish direct threats and actions.

Ghost runners in extra innings. Play the game straight up

Penalty kicks in soccer at the end of games. Either end in a tie or continue playing the game straight up.

Penalty kicks in soccer during the game. The guy getting fouled should have to take it.

reviews in sports. The teams are getting an extra time out. The players should have to stay at midcourt or middle of the field and the coaches should have to stay on the sidelines.

I'm sure there are more but these are enough for now.
Actually a game ending in a tie is horrible and should be banned

OT: Gene Hackman and his wife found dead in their New Mexico home

95 year old parent with a pacemaker - at least once a month
He didn't want that much contact from his kids. Not the other way around. They didn't enjoy contact with anyone the past few years. Wake up. They died weeks ago and nobody knew because they didn't want people in their lives everyday. Sad but it's actually more common than you think.

This shot chart is a total indictment of steve pikiells lack of an offense

He shoots 86% (86%!!!) from the foul line and is going to the line more each game. Not factoring that in, and foul shooting generally, diminishes the shot chart value. And based on his foul shooting he certainly projects to be a good shooter in future years.
1. I agree he can be a good shooter
2. Foul shooting really doesn't mean much to shooting FGs though

Having a 5 that has his attributes is a non starter if you fancy yourself as a good defensive team. Really just ends the conversation.

There are many reasons we stink defensively this year. Our defensive play from the 5 leads the list.

Recruiting

Billy Townson moves into the finals and will be wrestling for a CA state championship at 132.

He is going against Moses Mendoza, who is the #5 ranked wrestlers at the weight and a Michigan commit. Townson is ranked 12th at the weight but just beat the #6th ranked wrestler, Ashton Besmer, in the semi-finals 6-0. He got a reversal and 4 nearfall at the end of the second.
Excellent! Good matchup against another big ten recruit let's see how well he competes.
