Last night was our worst defensive night since November 16, 2019.....but

Yes - but saying something like "worst defensive night" is using a macro statistic on a small sample size (smaller in this game's case, due to the slightly slower pace)

Well, the worst points allowed per possession.... I think the results of that game were pretty good :)

I will happily have a terrible points-allowed-per-possession the rest of the season if we win every game between now and April 7th

I mean sure - if we continue to shoot over 41% from 3 a game maybe, but how likely is that? When was the last time we made 12 3s in a game?

In terms of D, I think you have to break this game down into pocket intervals of 5 mins because there was a very big disparity in the level of D depending on who was on the floor (substitutions around every 5ish minutes)”. Sommerville and Acuff were really bad. Plus / minus on them would be telling.

I think that’s important to note because it means Pike has the horses to slow down an opponent offense when he needs to.

Derkack needs to get benched

I look at Derkack as early-days McConnell. McConnell had a lot of growth at Rutgers, especially learning how to be elite on the defensive side of the ball.

But look at McConnell's sophomore/junior years compared to what we're seeing from Derkack so far this year:

JD (Jr) - 21.9 min, 6.8 pts (.358 FG%, .214 3P%, .746 FT%), 3.9 rb, 2.3 ast, 0.9 stl, 1.5 tov, 2.4 pf
CM (So) - 21.4 min, 6.7 pts, (.411 FG%, .280 3P%, .800 FT%), 3.7 rb, 1.5 ast, 0.8 stl, 1.4 tov, 1.6 pf
CM (Jr) - 22.9 min, 5.7 pts (.317 FG%, .204 3P%, .800 FT%), 4.3 rb, 1.6 ast, 1.5 stl, 0.9 tov, 2.4 pf

That's... not too dissimilar. If Derkack can continue to improve defensively and really internalize Pike's defensive schemes, he could be a real asset next year.

OT: New York Mets 2024-2025 Off Season Thread

MLB needs to rectify the ability of foreign players to choose where they’re signing.

U.S players endure a college draft.

Same should be the case for “ amateurs” from Japan and Latim America etc

Teams should draft and hold their rights
Fair.

And I assume this would be based on the previous season’s record like it normally is for a draft such as this?

NIL, what's the best course of action to remedy this?

Yea but this is an untenable position because then you’re at the mercy from one admin to the next. There’s no certainty. CBA is really the only answer that can give structure and stop all the lawsuits and challenges.

Even the transfer portal windows will be challenged now. Ironically at the coaches convention, the coaches voted (doesn’t have any real weight) to have just one window. Now we have a player trying to leave outside of the 2 windows available.
You're not entirely at the administration's mercy. The DOJ cannot itself torpedo the settlement. What it can do is to bring a lawsuit of its own against the NCAA. That's a huge headache, but there's no guarantee that the DOJ would win or that the court would impose a solution much different than the House settlement. I also must say I regard the DOJ statement as cheap talk, much like the Department of Education's insistence on proportionate pay. It's easy to take positions like that when you're about to leave office and when (frankly) you can say anything you like without consequences. Keep in mind that *neither* department took its current position when it actually could have done something to bring it about.

The transfer portal is sure to be challenged as an antitrust violation. My guess is that the NCAA will keep retreating.

I'm all for a CBA. But here's the problem. The states each control whether and how their public employees can unionize. The federal National Labor Relations Board can force Northwestern to recognize an athletes' union, but the NLRB has no power to, say , make Ohio State do that. That makes a national solution very hard to develop.

At some point, Congress is going to have to step in. But there is no way of knowing what it would do, when it would do it, or whether its solution would make the slightest sense.

Open DC position

2025 with its brutal schedule and our losses on the Defense side of the ball will make the new DC’s job very daunting. The foundation is there with the recruits coming in to make 2026 and beyond highly successful for the new DC.
You can't say the schedule is brutal when we have no clear idea of what teams are bring to the table for next year. Other then the name on the front of the Jersey that's about it.
