Impact of NIL/Portal on Coaching Tenures

What sort of impact do we think the portal/NIL will have on coaches serviceability?

Obviously we have seen coaches jump ship for better opportunities and bigger NIL bankrolls, but what will happen to the coaches struggling to win?

Since all of these rosters are turning over year after year will there be a bit of an adjustment on expectations for coaches? It was always 4 years for coaches to “get their guys” in the program. Will that remain is? Or is there now a more immediate expectation to win and be competitive?

Will be interesting to see that play out.

Rutgers HS Recruiting : 2026 Expectations

2016 : Recruiting Rank 78 : Football Record 2-10
2017 : 43 : 4-8
2018 : 58 : 1-11
2019 : 53 : 2-10
2020 : 67 : Schiano comes back : 3-6
2021 : 32 : 5-7
2022 : 38 : 4-8
2023 : 62 : 6-6
2024 : 35 : 7-5
2025 : 30
2026 : 29 so far

Football Games : first 3 years had losing records. Talent level was dismal. Last 2 years got us back to respectability on the field.
Recruiting : Not counting 2020 when if i recall he came into a dead period and had a few weeks to salvage the class, we are averaging a Rank 39 class even with the 2023 outlier. I know NIL has put Rutgers at a disadvantage to some programs, hopefully B10 Revenue sharing can help us some.

I got to believe that we will crack top 30 in recruiting ranking and get a 8-4(B10 5-4) record in the next 3 years.
Schiano 1.0 best recruiting years were 2011/2012 with ranks 32/24

Hoping we can get to 7-5 this year which will be tough with only 4 B10 home games and Oregon, PSU and OSU on the schedule..... but maybe with a winning record and an upset we can get a 25ish ranked recruiting class. Anyone think there is any chance at this? at least a 40% chance?

2026 Expected Points and All-Americans By Seed

I spent a little time yesterday folding the 2025 results into the model.

First, expected points, including bonus, per seed. Not a lot of big changes, but the hump in the 26/27 range has begun to flatten out a bit.

The other interesting thing is, despite the change in scoring there was not a noticeable change in bonus. While it is higher than the previous two years, those years were very down. I am looking at 11 years of data (the 16 and 32 seed era), and across that range 2024/25 bonus scoring does not stand out.

OT: 'Fire him immediately': Maryland fans turn on Kevin Willard ahead of Terrapins' Sweet Sixteen matchup

One of the worst kept secrets of all time. Ashame for the team and the fans that this surfaces on the eve of their sweet 16 game.

Judge postpones her final decision on whether to approve the House settlement.

There are 73 objectors and so (not surprisingly), Judge Wilken declined to rule from the bench. It is thought that her decision will be out within two weeks

Note that the settlement does not resolve anti-trust litigation brought by athletes who decided not to be among those who are settling. Note also that the judge regards the treatment of third-party NIL as an important issue.

How do we encourage more NIL Giving?

Basketball recruiting once again looks bleak, and we can’t continue like this if we want to win. With the way things are going, we’ll be lucky to get 15 wins next year, and may not even get to 10 Wins.

UConn, Villanova, Michigan, Penn State, and Ohio State fans also have bills, grandchildren, income taxes, property taxes, electric bills, mortgages, car payments, and children’s tuition. I’ve heard the litany of excuses. What we need is money from our stakeholders, not excuses.

The school currently has No President, No AD, and currently No direction. Our peers find a way to support winning athletics via NIL without much cajoling. Do you know what the University of Miami did to encourage NIL giving? Nothing.
With the support they’ve received, they can buy the best players money can buy.
People are either motivated to support NIL or they’re not.

In my estimation, there is nothing additional the school could do to motivate people to give to http://knightsoftheraritan.com

It couldn’t be easier. All people have to do is go to the website and drop some bills.

If I was Pikiell here is how I’d fundraise

Let me preface this with, a large part of my livelihood involves raising equity. Over the past decade my 2 partners and I have raised close to $100,000,000 from investors. So I have some experience to lean on here.

What I dont have experience with is raising funds when the people youre asking money from will get no financial return.

What do people with alot of money who will not get a financial return on their money want? I believe they want access and to feel important. I believe Pike should be meeting with big $$$ alums and generally just big local basketball fans with $$$ and pitching them as joining his “front office”.

“Front Office” perks: you are treated as an executive of the basketball program much like the owner, GM and president of an nba team are. You can come to the facility any time you want, come into meetings, sit in on the negotiations with agents of players on the team and in the portal, have full access to our big board of recruits both portal/high school, come to practice, have court side season tickets, can travel with the team to away games on the team flight, stay with the team at the team hotel, eat with the team etc. To get all these perks we need a minimum $1,500,000/year towards NIL and we are looking for just 2-3 guys.

It is ALOT easier to land 2-3 whales than try to get 3,000 people to donate $100/month.

He needs to stop wasting his time with the average fan donating $100/month. Quality > quantity. Stop going to top golf events, stop going to a small whiskey tasting, just be targeted in your approach.

Who loves our program, who loves bball in general and has a ton of money? Who is an aspiring NBA owner who can get his name out there in the press by taking a mediocre at best Rutgers program and turning them into a national power?

It takes minimal effort to do this. Hopefully pike is up for earning his paycheck.

Penn St. Week

Obviously a big a game. We need to get two wins anywhere to get to the bubble. Getting one at PSU will be hard, but not impossible. We laid an egg offensively Sat, mostly due to unforced simple errors. I don't mind those in the course of making plays but many of the turnovers we had were simple transition passes. We can't do that against PSU or any other decent to good team. Good news is we can clean that up fairly easily.

Another monster game. Not turning it over, groundballs, and more stellar play from Stoller and the D are going to be needed. Their offense can put up numbers and their D is good, but the one place we can attack them from is at the midfield. Their D mids are not our D mids. They can be had.

This game is played for the "Friendship Cup" every year, which I'm not sure why it is called that given their isn't much friendship. It should be renamed the Tom Hayes Cup for obvious reason.

110 Years Ago in Rutgers Football History and A Player on a Ghost Team

Rutgers defeated Springfield 44-13 on October 30, 1915 at Federal League Park in Harrison, N.J. Earlier that year, construction started on March 1 and by April 16 the Newark Peppers of the Federal League played their first game at a packed 20,000 seat home. The Federal League was a rival to the American and National Leagues in baseball but lasted only two years. The Indianapolis Hoosiers (1914) were moved to Newark for the 1915 season. But the club and the League folded by the end of the year. Rutgers played Northwestern there in 1919 when its name changed to Harrison Park. It burned down on August 18, 1923.

Even though the Peppers existed in New Jersey for only the 1915 season, infielder Rupert Mills was still an active member of the non-existent 1916 Newark team. When he signed his contract he was guaranteed his 1916 salary provided he showed up for work. He fulfilled the contract obligation by showing up at an empty Harrison Park and did a workout each day. Fortunately, Mills lived in Newark and was the only New Jerseyan who "played" on the defunct Newark Peppers.

Why Should I Renew Basketball Season Tickets?

I've followed Rutgers Basketball since the mid-80's and was a student in the late '80s. This year was my 30th consecutive year with 2 season tickets in the 100s. Like others, I received the e-mail about the auto-renew opt out period. If curious, with seat licenses, parking, and tickets my invoice was for $4,286 (about $134 per seat per game). I obviously stuck with it through a lot of bad seasons so the Geo-Ron years were a revelation, the most exciting and rewarding RAC games I've attended in over 40 years but they are starting to be a distant memory.

Is this truly hopeless? Transfer Portal, NIL, revenue sharing where basketball-centric programs seemingly now have an upper hand, reputation of underachieving with elite players. The reasons against being successful are even more stark than ever. Can anyone provide any path for this program to achieve anything that someone could deem "successful"? Realistically. The issues seem to run deeper than just Pikiell being a bad fundraiser and a defense-first coach.

What is the scenario where this program can ever be successful? Realistically. And don't tell me, "hire Rick Pitino".
