NIL Clarification needed

I don't want this to turn into an indictment on our fans' commitment to the program or a criticism of the staff's ability to recruit. But I see a lot of people referencing how everything is about NIL now and how that is the single biggest hurdle/cause for why this 2023 recruiting class simply isn't good enough. But I'm very much at a "Show Your Work" point because I feel like it's just being thrown around because it's easy to say and everyone just accepts it.
I'd like the Rivals staff or people who are really in the know (specific examples even if no name given) to be more specific on how NIL is keeping kids from coming here. I get how it eliminated whatever small chance we had with Bisontis. And I know the stories of what they're doing at Miami and A&M and Tennessee and USC for all of the high profile recruits. But those aren't the only guys that we've missed on this year. So are all of the 3-star regional recruits also getting money when they choose Maryland or Pitt or Illinois or whoever else we've lost to in recruiting battles? Also, did a guy Bridgeman actually get money from Michigan or did he just choose them over us (seemed like a guy we had a really good shot at)?
It just feels too easy to say "NIL" without some context.

Believe, Or Better Yet- WIN

Next we need to see a lot of changes (e.g. OC. QB Coach, ST)....players progressing, new players thru any means necessary: I.e. W's!

Check out these upsets tonight.

Maine beats BC 69-64 led wire to wire. Northwestern State beat TCU 64-63; Coppin State beat Navy 72-65 led wire to wire ; Florida Atlantic beats Florida 74-72; Stetson beat South Florida 68-67; Troy beats Florida State 79-72. Plus Villanova was struggling all game with Delaware State before winning 60-50.

We play Temple who beat Villanova for the 1st time in a decade : Rider who lost to Big East regular season champ Providence on opening night by 1 ; Coppin State who just beat Navy tonight by 7 and was beating Georgetown all game until losing in OT . These MEAC and SWAC teams have been scheduling harder out of conference to prepare them for their season. The SWAC supposedly had 4 upsets last week and they ran an article on their strategy which they are pitching to recruits to come here we play top Power Conference teams and they are getting better recruits.

We had some cupcakes in Columbia and Sacred Heart and likely Central Connecticut State , but Rider , UMASS Lowell , Bucknell and Coppin State look to be better out of conference opponents than we thought preseason and should help us at year end. Plus Temple , Miami , Seton Hall and Wake Forest adds to a stronger SOS. The bitching in the off-season doesn’t look like it will pan out.

Tidbits - CCSU

- CCSU is 0-6 this season.

- They have lost to UMass by 27 points and to St Johns by 17 points. Other losses have been to Quinnipiac (2 points); Lafayette; UMBC and Maine.

- Head Coach is Patrick Sellers in his 2nd year. Sellers was an assistant under Jay Young at Fairfield and also was an assistant at UConn for approx 6 years. Thus a "Relationship" game.

- They have 4 players who average between 10-13 PPG who are: Kellen Amos; Nigel Scuttlebury (6' guard); Devonte Sweatman (5'8" G) and Andre Snoddy.

- Some team stats: Team averages 66 PPG; 3 Point % = 37% and FT % = 66%.

- Only local player is Abdul Momoh - A Sophomore F via Carteret and the Patrick School. He averages approx 19 minutes per game.

- CCSU plays in the NEC and their nickname is the Blue Devils.

Are we really progressing as a program??? ?

Facts
2021-record versus power 5 teams : 2-7
Average score 14.5-29.0

2022 record versus power 5 teams 2-5
Abrasive score 14.5-29.5

The opinion
2022 feels very much like we have moved sideways from 2021. 2021 we also had close losses as well as 2022.

the real question to be determined will this season set up for a better 2022

we all know a lot of that depends on Winstatt development …but there is more too it than that

legit questions
1.) QB play and development

2.) the WR room in 2023 looks very concerning without Ryan and AC

3.) are we still going to need to rely on the portal for the oline patchwork until Greg’s recruits are ready to play more.

4.) can we develop depth in the linebacker roon. Can’t play base nickle forever and expect to stop the run. That’s been quickly exposed …

5.) how do we compensate for losing korzak ? His punting has keep us more competitive in the last two years …and you can’t expect his replacment to do what he did and how many long fields he forced that likely with

6.) who steps up at saftey for 2022 graduates

7.) will we fix the issues in special teams . Even with AC, our return game has been messy and our KO coverage has been a problem all season ….

8.) can we win the portal this off-season? (Ie add more than we lose )

9.) can we find an OC that can work with Greg ? This is a legit question…and isn’t a slam dunk even with what we will offer in salary

10.) lastly …when will Greg grow up as a game day coach . His game day coaching at times is questionable. Today’s mismanagement of the clock at the end of the half is questionable . Tying to “take the theee points “ in a 21-14 game with 9 minutes to go was questionable. I understand his logic in both cases, but we never seem to benefit with the logic either …it always seems to backfire. It feels like he coaches like paterno in the 80s on game day, which is fine if you are the better team 80% of the time ; but we aren’t

a lot of questions….and I’m still not sure that the youth Potential will make the difference in 2023. That scheduke is brutal….there are four road losses (Michigan , Penn state , Iowa and Wisconsin ) and Ohio state at home that we are going to be double digit underdogs that are five losses without pulling an upset …the margin of error to six wins is gojg to be razor thin and will require a lot of those questions listed above to be successful answered

this point in the rebuikd is probably expected … but doesn’t make the diehard feel any better

The path to bowl eligibility 2022 for RU

Might as well post it for your rooting interests.

Brian Fonseca put out an article earlier this week, credit to him I took that and then narrowed down the actual list of you want to follow along.

Basically there are 2 “up for grabs” spots available for 5-7 teams at or below us in APR (the rest of the spots are already claimed by 6-win teams and also 5-win teams with APR better than us)

So, besides us beating Maryland (1 spot), only 1 other team on this list can win - yes, if 2 teams or more win on this list we lose out. So long long odds at all but still, a chance:

Vandy, Auburn, FAU, UAB, UTEP, Ga Southern, Buffalo, Southern Miss, Louisiana Lafayette, Iowa State, Army, UNLV

12 teams, plus us, fighting for 2 spots, where any 2 teams that win on this list would bump us out (due to either getting to 6 wins, or getting to 5 wins like us but being higher in APR - ISU, Army, UNLV)

The Chicken and The Egg

I think we can all agree that NIL has completely changed the rules of the game.

One of Greg's strengths was his ability to close on recruits, especially when he had recruiters like Fran Brown.

From everything have heard, we have less than a half million allocated for ALL our sports, can't imagine we have enough to keep some of our better players ('Lewis, Powell, SBV) no less set aside any money for recruits

So the question is this -

If there is no excitement around the football team after this year, and little money coming into NIL, how does Greg compete with even mid level Big10 teams.

Would love a donor like the Towers to kick in a million, but that doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon, so how does Greg get out of this downward spiral

FB Recruiting The latest on a 2023 QB target...

Things change in recruiting quickly, but just wanted to let everyone know I'm hearing Rutgers is likely going to start looking into another quarterback soon as it seems Jack Grusser isn't sure what he wants to do yet in terms of his decision and Rutgers wants an answer sooner rather than later. Expecting a new offer to go out relatively soon.

We are who we thought we were

Everyone pegged us at 3-4 wins this year including many on this board as well. Well here we are, the level of hysteria is bizarre. The D was an improvement this year overall. Offense will be improved with a healthy Sam Brown. When wr are able to run the ball well, Gavin plays better period (Look at MSU game). Our sample size this year for him has been 3 top 20 defenses. (michigan which he showed some good flashes against), MSU where he played well, and today he was bad. And we couldnt run the ball in all those games except one. Those are tough expectations for any QB let along a true freshman.

We are ok. We knew we’d be where we are. If Greg goes and gets a good OC and QB coach we are in OK shape next year. Onto Basketball!

OT: Our Son's Very Different College Sport.

Our son Troy is starting his sophomore year at Saint Louis University (SLU) and is a Flight Science (Professional Pilot) major. Yesterday he earned a position on SLU’s Competitive Flight Team, The Flying Billikens. There are 8 student pilots on the team, including Troy, and they will compete over the next month for starting positions representing SLU in regional competition (they are in region 6) at Kansas State University in mid-October. Practices are at 6am at the St. Louis Downtown Airport, SLU's home airport.

There are approximately 100 universities nationally that have competitive flight teams and are members of NIFA, The National Intercollegiate Flight Association, which is like the NCAA to competitive flying.

There are 9 NIFA Regions nationally. SLU competes in Region 6 against Iowa State, Kansas State, Nebraska, North Dakota and Wisconsin to name a few. Universities in other regions include the Service Academies, Air Force, Army, Coast Guard and Navy, plus Auburn, Cincinnati, Embry-Riddle, Florida Tech, Indiana State, Ohio, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Purdue, San Jose State and Western Michigan.

Some of the competitive events are Power Off Landing, Short-field Landing, Message Drop, Simulated Comprehensive Aircraft Navigation and Traditional Navigation.

The winners of the 9 regional competitions then go to Super Regionals and those winners then go to the National Finals every year, just like college baseball/ softball, soccer, hoops, etc.

So, Troy’s college sport is Competitive Flying, which works hand in hand with his academic major of Flight Science and his career goal of being a Professional Pilot. As he told me, "this will make me a better pilot, and I'm competing in the fastest of all college sports at the highest level."

Had any of you heard about Competitive Flying in College before, as I hadn't before Troy attended SLU.
