My Thoughts on Washington

1. We are what schiano said we are. We are tough mentally and physically.

2. We need better fill from our LBs and Dixon badly. We were not gap sound and got gashed at times.

3. Our WRs are getting significantly better. They can make plays, that being said we are leaving plays on the field. Two big drops could have been costly, but were not. Washington dared us to throw, and their secondary was good and stayed with us.

4. AK throws a bit high when he is jacked up. He is learning to control his emotions, but he is the best QB we have had in a long time. That being said we can not have the high passes like we saw on the first 3.

5. KM and SB are legit RBs. Brown is running the best he has in his career here.

6. Our OL is consistent. They are so bought in to doing their jobs. They may not be elite, but they are turning into a very good OL.

7. Our TEs are getting better in the blocking game but we still lunge at times.

8. We miss 1-2 sacks a game, and that will really hurt us against Nebraska if we do not fix that.

9. Washington had a lot of yards, but many of them were check down.
9a. The missed tackle for the long TD on the check down was very, very bad. Unacceptable in my opinion. We can not have that from someone who should be an elite player for us at the LB spot.

10. The culture of our program showed through with how we stayed composed and came up in big situations.

11. The atmosphere was awesome.

12. Good teams find ways to win big games. We are a good team, but we have not proven we are a great team.

13. I expect us to get votes this week, but not crack the top 25. The Nebraska game is going to really show who we are.

14. I still have us as 9-3 or 10-2 before the bowl game. We need to be able to play consistently for 4 quarters to win the big10 games coming up, especially on the road.

Weather for UW @ RU: Should be warm, cloudy and mostly dry, but a few sprinkles/light showers are possible

The forecast from every source, right now, shows it being seasonably warm (highs in the low/mid-70s and evening temps in the mid/upper 60s; normal for 9/27 is a high/low of 74/52F) and dry for the tailgates and game, with a front coming through by late Thursday/early Friday, but we're still 7 days out (from last night's model runs) and that front is slow moving (and hence, a bit unpredictable) and there are modeled areas of precip not far from our region on Friday, meaning it's still quite possible that the synoptic evolution could vary significantly and one of those systems could bring us some rain on Friday. So, cautiously optimistic for nice weather, but too far out with too much uncertainty for it to be a lock (that's pretty rare 7 days out).

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
418 AM EDT Sat Sep 21 2024

LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The Long Term period will feature a prolonged period of
unsettled weather.

Low pressure will move through the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley,
and a cold front will extend down from that low. Meanwhile,
high pressure will be over the Canadian Maritimes, and the the
base of that high will extend down into the Northeast. While
this should keep the front from making much headway on Tuesday,
the high should depart by Wednesday, and then low pressure drags
the front into the local area. Models are suggesting that by
Wednesday, a trough moves in from the west, and with some
shortwave energy, low pressure could develop on that front. This
would bring more in the way of rainfall to the area from
Tuesday night through Wednesday night. Will follow NBM and go
with likely PoPs during that time. However, there are
inconsistencies among the models, so this may change.

The front may not fully clear the region until Friday or so,
and unsettled weather may remain in place until then.

Negative recruiting

Spent some time over the weekend with my brother and his friend who is pretty dialed in on the high school/aau/recruiting side of things. He brought something up that I thought was interesting regarding what comes next after Ace & Dylan and where recruiting might go. He said he heard from someone that some other programs are telling some bigger recruits that “the coaches recruiting you at RU won’t be there to coach you”. Namely saying that B Knight and potentially others will be gone after this season (assuming they mean he’ll get a head coaching gig). I wouldn’t normally post this since it’s from a friend of a friend and I haven’t personally heard this from anyone else, but figured I’d post as it is pretty interesting and not crazy.

RU First Class Operation Tonight

Was very impressed with the whole stadium experience tonight. Students packing in the seats, fans getting loud and of course the marching band at halftime was impressive as heck. Twitter had it all over the place stating "Must see Rutgers halftime".

Also the drones. UDub couple I was chatting with loved the tailgating atmosphere. and the stadium noise.

But have to admit whoever came up with the North , South and then Central Jersey idea needs a gold star.

Haven't watched what the commentators had to to say , but I would think they were impressed.

Good job Rutgers!

Two RIDICULOUS runs (and other superlatives)

I think we were lucky to win this game on a night we were outgained by 222 yards and our defense struggled mightily, but there were many positives to take away:

1. Ridiculous run #1 - Rutgers is backed up at their own 5 yard line, and Kyle Monangai finds a crease and then bounces off of five would-be tacklers on his way to a 40-yard gain. That play allowed us to flip the field and hold off UW’s offense for a while.

2. Ridiculous run #2 - Sam Brown finds a hole on the left, cuts back toward the middle, runs over a safety and somehow maintains his balance, and then turns on the jets and outraces the UW defense for a 37-yard TD. Folks, if it wasn’t already evident from his performance against VaTech, Samuel Brown V is BACK.

3. The defense was generally bad. Like really bad. But they made stops when they really needed to. UW was 2-12 on 3rd down conversions and 2-4 on 4th down conversions. That’s 4-16 (25%) on drive stopping plays, which is pretty amazing.

4. Ian was STRONG - he only had 5 catches for 40 yards, but go back and take a look at those 5 grabs. All of them were in traffic, all of them were clutch, and the TD catch on the fade was a thing of beauty. On a night where Dymere Miller was held in check, Ian Strong came up BIG.

5. Athan Kaliakmanis had pretty pedestrian numbers (14-24, 115), but he managed the game well and once again didn’t put the ball in harms’ way. He was a little “off” with some of his throws (mostly high throws), especially early, but after the hype wore off, he made some really nice throws, scrambled for a first down to avoid a sack, and made that beautiful throw to Strong for the TD.

6. Jakob Anderson had a nice night punting the ball. He had 7 punts for a 41.6 yard average, and a long of 47, and those two punts in the second half from our own end went for well over 40 yards, with good hang time, and did not allow for returns. The kid is a freshman, and while he’s not Adam Korsak, he’s making nice progress.

Monangai, Brown and a few random thoughts

I couldn't help but think how lucky we are to have Monangai and Brown. Not only are they both great football players, but in the days of NIL and guys leaving mid season, these two are a class act. The hug they shared after Brown's touchdown was genuine and it's great these guys put team ahead of themselves.

I thought the stadium looked great last night. The crowd was loud and the stadium was packed. The flow of the game wasn't great at times, but people brought it and should be commended. Was definitely a good night for the program.

The defense... while they have up only 18, it could easily have been 30+ (two missed field goals and some bad red zone execution by Washington). It felt like Washington could of (and maybe should have) run the ball 90% of the time. I'm not sure what happened to the stout defense but our DL and LBs need to be better. I'm also worked about our inability to get pressure. I felt like harysmiak was always good at dialing up pressure but it rarely got to the target last night.

All that said, the discipline of this team needs to be commended. The great Chris Ash used to say "games aren't won, they are lost". I think he's generally wrong about that, but Washington lost that game through lack of discipline, bad execution, and stupid play calling.

Overall a good win and keeps the season moving in the right direction. Into Nebraska.

Fundraiser - RU Riot Squad to Virginia Tech!

Hello Rutgers University Alumni and Supporters,

I hope this message finds you all well. I am posting here to request financial support for an upcoming trip to support the Rutgers Scarlet Knights Football team as we plan on ruining the “White Effect” on September 21st in Blacksburg, VA.

In the past we have turned to the boards for support to create our core memory of a trip for fourteen students to Indiana University to watch the Scarlet Knights become bowl eligible, as well as the notorious fifty person trip to the 19 point Rutgers comeback in State College.

This trip’s goal is to bring thirty executive board, committee, and general body Riot Squad members to Lane Stadium to give our Scarlet Knights the unparalleled support they deserve as well as build upon the sense of community and pride associated with our great university.

Transportation:
We plan on bringing eight cars full of students to Blacksburg leaving at various times throughout the day on Friday, September 20, due to classes, work, the career fair, etc. Additionally, the “unc” of the Riot Squad, @aleccr12, who is covering the game, will provide transportation by road again (in his mom van that seats seven!).

Accommodation:
We have booked an Airbnb cabin just outside Blacksburg, VA which we will stay on Friday and Saturday night.

Estimated Budget:
Our preliminary budget for the trip is as follows:

Super Bowl Box Fundraiser: $975
Student Trip Fee: $750
Total Raised: $1725

Transportation:
Gas Expenses: $600

Accommodation:
Airbnb for 30 in Blacksburg: $1,960

Miscellaneous/Overhead: $200

Total Estimated Trip Cost: $2,760

Total Requested Funds: $1,035

In return for your generous support, we plan to recognize all donors as sponsors for the trip. This recognition will include acknowledgment and posts on our social media platforms, and gratitude expressed at any related events.

We believe that this trip will be a fantastic opportunity to strengthen the student community and spirit here at Rutgers and provide our students with a memorable and unique experience. We appreciate your consideration of our funding request and look forward to the possibility of making this trip a reality for as many students as possible with your support.

If you are interested in donating, please Venmo @brentisagamer with the subject line “Virginia Tech Donation.” Every donation will get us miles closer to Blacksburg! If you have any ideas or questions on how to make this the best trip possible for us or would like to submit a donation another way, please contact myself at 917-881-6889 or at tsl57@scarletmail.rutgers.edu.
