OT: 2024 CFB TV ratings

Sportsmediawatch hasn't put out those easy to read green tables yet (don't know if they will this year) but the article mentions some of the ratings for BTN/FS1 etc... Didn't see the RU/Howard game mentioned. Good opening week for Disney.

Edit: they posted it later than usual but those tables are available again

Rutgers Player Personnel Asst. to UMass Staff

Former Quality Control coach / Graduate Assistant Kayon Whitaker is set to join the UMass staff as a Defensive Analyst. This shouldn't be too shocking considering he both played and coached under Harasymiak at Maine.

FB Recruiting Transfer Portal Visitor Next Week

I've confirmed that Charlotte TE Colin Weber will be visiting Rutgers early next week. He'll be on campus from Monday night until Wednesday on an official visit. I like where Rutgers stands here.

Here's what I wrote earlier this week when Rutgers offered Weber...

Colin Weber (RS JR, Charlotte):
Weber is listed at 6-4, 255 lbs and has 1 year of eligibility after this season. He's from Hopkins, MI and went to Hopkins HS.

Weber has been a productive receiver in his time at Charlotte, leading the Niners in receptions in 2023 and 2nd in receiving yards when he totalled 34 catches for 362 yards. This season he saw those numbers dip a bit when he hauled in 21 catches for 213 yards.

Weber graded out as one of the best TEs in the nation in 2023 when he graded out with an 81.2 overall grade (8th out of 477 qualifying TEs), including an 87.8 receiving grade, 77.2 pass blocking grade and 60.8 run blocking grade. This season he's seen his grades slip a bit, putting up a 57.9 overall grade (222nd out of 487 qualifying TEs), a 59.4 receiving grade, a 65.1 pass blocking grade and a 57.4 run blocking grade.

Here's some highlights from his career high in receiving (5 catches for 117 yards against Memphis)

Catches at 1:00 and 3:23

Here's an interview he gave in the summer, apparently he's the only D1 athlete to ever come out of his HS and also he played for the Family AAU team (Smoke Williamson connection). Weber was an incredible HS athlete, named to the all-state teams in both football and basketball, with D1 football and basketball offers. He played PG in HS, which surprised me for a guy his size.

Weber looks like a very fluid athlete with good size for the TE position, would be a very nice pickup imo

RAPID REACTION - Penn State

Was away for the weekend, so wasn’t able to post after the Ohio State game, but Rapid Reaction is back tonight after a nail biting 80-76 win over Penn State.

1. We almost lost this game at the foul line. We were 8-10 in the first half but just 6-15 in the second half. If we hit 4 of those to go a below average 10-15, we’re not sweating this game out in the final minutes. I’ve said this before, but I am convinced that we shoot FTs poorly at home because we don’t practice in the RAC.

2. We were 8-18 on threes in the first half, and missed about four wiiiiiiiiiiiiddddeee open ones. We were then 0-4 on threes in the second half. I don’t mind Pike telling the team at half to not fall in love with the three in the second half, but there’s gotta be a happy medium here.

3. Part of the reason for the poor second half on offense is that Pike seemed to take the wind out of the offense about midway through the second half. Instead of running offense, our guards were just dribbling the ball out on the perimeter and chewing clock. You CANNOT go into a shell that early.

4. Brilliant decision by Pike to start JMike tonight against Ace Baldwin. JMike only played 19 minutes, but he was a huge reason PSU never got comfortable on offense in the first half, because he was disrupting Baldwin’s dribble penetration off of high screens.

5. Ace Bailey really played a gritty game and finished with a 15-15 double double. He really mixed it up in the paint and fought for rebounds and got a couple of blocks. He didn’t hit a single jump shot tonight but helped in every other facet of the game. I just wish he wouldn’t be so hesitant to take threes.

6. Separate paragraph for Ace just making a “winning” play in crunch time when he grabbed a rebound, drove the length of the court and got a layup to put us up by 4 points. That’s the kind of play stars are supposed to make on good teams. A winning play by a star on the winning team.

7. Dylan with another superb all-around game, with 24 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 blocks. He was rolling with three early 3s, and that helped the team gain confidence in the early going. After he missed a few jumpers, he then focused on getting down hill and getting to the foul line. Unfortunately he was just 5-9 from the line.

8. Ogbole played incredible defense in the first half, walling up on dribble drives and stuffing shots, ending up with 3 blocks.

9. Rebounding was much better tonight. We outrebounded PSU 46-32, and, more importantly, only gave up 6 offensive rebounds.

10. The stat of the night is Lathan Sommerville with 4 assists. Lathan grew up tonight, as there wasn’t a single time I thought he hogged the ball in the post. Instead, he passed from the high post and he passed out for kickout threes on offensive rebounds. He also picked his spots for attacking the basket in finishing with 6 points.

11. I’VE NEVER SEEN A WORSE BLOCKING CALL IN MY LIFE WHEN DERKACK GOT PLOWED INTO WITH BOTH FEET SET IN THE PAINT. THAT WAS THE MOST OBVIOUS CHARGE I’VE EVER SEEN.

12 Why can’t anything ever be “easy” with this team? We have a 17 point lead early in the second half and then let Penn State keep chipping away. I’m glad we won, and I guess we “learned how to win,” but being outscored 15-8 in the final 8:18 just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. But at least it’s a bad taste in a win.

13. Penn State is a good team, easily a top half team in the Big Ten. We were lucky we got Baldwin and their big man Neiderhauser in foul trouble.

NCAA Freshmen - Weekly Ranking + The Ups and Downs

So .... CBS Sports had a worthwhile read ... well more fun than worthwhile (no real meaning at this stage) on its current ranking of NCAA freshmen: https://www.cbssports.com/college-b...lan-harper-earns-freshman-of-the-week-honors/. The start of the article was about Harper winning freshman of the week, followed by their current ranking.

And, talking about the "ups and downs" of being a freshman, consider that Egor Demin (of BYU), the new hottest name of frosh who some think could challenge Cooper Flagg for the #1 NBA draft slot, just went 0-10 FG last night ... that's right, 0-10.

So, for sh*ts and giggles, the stats for each of the top 5 or 10 frosh, so far, at 12/4/24 (all from sports-reference.com):

Flagg: 15.9 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 4.1 ass/g (29 total), 44% FG, 27% 3-point, 71% FT, 48% eFG, 21 Player Efficiency, 1.2 Win Shares ... 10 stl, 10 BS, 22 TO. He has 2 games under 10 points (both blowouts against very low competition), 2 games 20 or more pts, 2 games with 13 points, 1 game with 18 points, and 2 double doubles. .

Harper: 23.8 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 4.6 ass/g (37), 51% FG, 29% 3-point, 59% 2-point, 79% FT, 55% eFG, 27.8 Player Efficiency, 1.8 Win Shares ... 7 steals, 3 blocks, 16 TO. He has 6 of his 8 games with 20 points or more, 2 with 36 or more points, 1 game with 18 and 1 game with 14 points. Only 3 games of 8 shooting under 50% from the field for the game.

Bailey: Only 6 games because missed the 1st two games. 18.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 0.7 ass/g, 46.7 % FG, 38% 3-point, 51% 2-point, 80% FT, 52.7% eFG, 19.1 Player Efficiency, 0.7 Win Shares ... 9 steals, 4 blocks, 11 TO. Lowest point total is 10 points vs ND, all other games 17 points or higher, including games of 22, 23 and 24 points ... $ of 6 games shooting 50% or better FG. 2 double doubles.

Egor Demin: 13.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 5.8 ass/g, 49% FG, 38.5% 3-point, 61% 2-point, 68% FT, 59% eFG, 23.8 Player Efficiency, 1.3 Win Shares ... 13 steals, 6 blocks, 19 TO (all in 8 games). He has a very wide range of performances this season so far: He started very strong, which garnered him a lot of early attention: averaged 17 ppg and 7.5 ass/g in his 1st 4 games ... but since then, the next 4 games, not so good: 3 single digit scoring efforts (8 pts, 16 points, 8 points and 6 points) - under 10 ppg in those 4 games, and 16 assists (4/g), shooting 11-34 FG, 4-19 3-pointers ... 3 of the 4 games were against the better teams BYU played: Ole Miss, NC State and Providence - but none other than Ole Miss real powerhouses. The 3 players listed above all did very well in several games against top competition - Not Demin.

Tre Johnson: 21.1 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 2.0 ass/g, 47.7% FG, 42% 3-point, 52.5% 2-point, 85% FT, 57.3% eFG, 22.7 Player Efficiency, 1.2 Win Shares ... In 7 games, 5 steals, 3 blocks and 13 TO (to 14 assists). Double digits in every game, a low of 16 points, highs of 29 and 28 points, 3 times 20 or more points. Leading a =very good Texas team - though Texas has not really played ANYONE, other than an opening game vs Ohio State, who beat Texas ... literally NO OPNE (best team was Ohio State, next best team was Syracuse, 3rd best was ... St. Joes?) A pure scorer, high level - does not do much of anything else.

I have to go, so do not have time to add others: Edgcombe, Queen, Jakocionis (sp) of Illinois and Fland. Maybe later tonight I'll add those, or tomorrow ...or not at all.

Truthfully, it looks to me like there are basically THREE tiers of players: Flagg, Harper and Bailey in Tier 1, Queen and Jakocionis in the next tier - maybe Tre Johnson, and Tre Johnson (if not in the 2nd tier), Fland and Edgecombe (does Edgecombe really belong here at all at this stage - only 11 ppg).
