Kevin Willard Makes Telling Comments About his Adjustments per the Transfer Portal

Kevin Willard recently talked about adjustments he's making to how he runs his basketball program, in order to adapt to life with the transfer portal. I'm sure he's only giving voice to concerns that most other coaches have.

He said that he will never take any more than three freshmen a year anymore. His reasoning was that freshmen have to be paid for, just like everybody else, even though they've never shown that they will contribute. And if they do contribute, they're likely to move on for a bigger paycheck anyway. In his view, the best bet nowadays is to comb the portal list for proven value.

There was a lot more to it than that, but that was the part that really stuck with me.

"We won't take any more than three freshmen a year. And everyone says, 'Well, why?' I tell them, you have to pay freshmen. They haven't scored a bucket for you. They're unproven, as good as they are and I think I have one of the best freshmen in the country. [But] they still haven't scored for you. So you're going to go out there and you're going to have to commit money to them and then at the end of the year, really, they're all going to transfer because it's the only way for them to find out what their true value is, is to go in the portal," he said.

" I thought I was going to build Maryland with three or four freshman classes. And get those guys better. And then that's just not the way it is anymore. "

Could not overcome the loss of WR-Strong and OG-Felter

Strong is obviously dinged and did not play as much as he wasn’t 100%, and saw very few targets. Felter was a huge loss as he was our 2nd best lineman, and our OL as a whole struggled in pass protection, yielding 4 sacks.

Defense played very well. When your defense gives up 14 points, defense isn’t the issue.

As for our offensive void, Black and Duff stepped into the void, and were our Top 2 leading receivers. Too bad Black dropped that Touchdown pass but redeemed himself by making our lone Touchdown catch.

His drop nevertheless symbolized our day. We had our opportunities, just could not capitalize.

Athan had an off day and was well below 50% as we could not give him adequate time to make his throws. His throw which Black dropped was right on the money.

The only disappointment I have is Monagai only had 19 carries, as we got away from the run in the 2nd half. I thought I heard he had 65 yards at halftime.

I expected we were going to run the ball in the 2nd half. He needs to get at least 25-30 carries. If you’re going to lose, lose with your best.

Beat Wisconsin and no one will care that we lost to Nebraska. Let’s Get it!

Five bold predictions for the remainder of the 2024 Big Ten football season

I was in CFB heaven yesterday

Went to the Navy game (my second favorite team). They beat undefeated Memphis (Memphis favored by 9.5) in an incredible game, 56-44. Was watching RU-VA Tech online also. Memphis closed it to 49-44 with a 1:20 left. Got the insides kick and I thought it was over for Navy. Navy intercepted a pass at the Navy 14 with 29 seconds left and returned it for a touchdown. At the same time, Rutgers closed out the big road win.

A very big hypothetical: If 'project Rudy' actually happens, what's our best basketball conference?

It seems like this idea for a 70 team football 'league' is starting to have some legs. More AD's and TV people are starting to get involved.

So IF this actually happens, you would have to think these massive cross country conferences would be no more. It just wouldn't make sense.

What happens to the Big Ten in other sports? It seems pretty silly for all our Olympic sports to travel all over the country when we could put together a solid conference with just northeast and mid-Atlantic schools.

Assuming the Big East doesn't want to take any teams, do we start a conference with the east coast B1G schools and ACC/ American northeast schools?

Rutgers
Maryland
Penn State
Boston College
Syracuse
Pittsburgh
Temple

Can you convince some Big East teams to join? Seton Hall, Georgetown, St Johns, Providence, Villanova...

Intrasquad Scrimmage

Friday Night Lights is back. Team played to a close score with a lot of new faces making their presence known. One who isn't new is LSM Splain. He had quite a day. These intrasquad scrimmages are fun. The kids really get after and they are often run and gun affairs. If you ever get to see one, check it out. They are very competitive.
