OT: Curt Simmons dead at 93

The last of the 1950 Phillies Whiz Kids team has thrown has thrown his last curve.
The lefthander was drafted into the Army in Sept. of that year.He attempted to get a pass to pitch against the Yankees in the World Series but was turned down(The CO must have been a Yankees fan.)

Curt finally got that chance, pitching for the Cardinals in Game 3 at Yankee Stadium in 1964,getting a no decision.

FB Recruiting Kent State transfer WR Devontez Walker recaps weekend trip to Rutgers

Just confirmed that Rutgers Football is hosting Kent State WR Devontez Walker on an official visit. He was on campus this weekend and was in NYC last night.

UPDATE (12/14 -- 12:30AM)....

Number of open scholarships for next season.

I believe we will have at least 2 scholarships for next year and possibly more. We have 13 full scholarships and I think Aiden Terry probably is # 13 again this season. We know we will lose Caleb and probably Oskar as I think he will graduate in May. We already have Gavin and now Jamichael as long as he signs in the spring. I would think at least one other could open up if someone doesn't return or if Aiden is not on full scholarship next season. I think Derrick and Jamichael can both make for so much more speed at our guard positions. They could really drive the lane and give more outside looks to others.

Hoops Suggestions Moving Forward

1. Stop having Cliff guarding out around the key and running here and there. Stay on your man / or area (if zone) , reduce fouls, increase rebounds and hopefully increase point production.

2. Have Paul looking for shots as well as passes. Remember the stretch last year when Paul seemed unstoppable? IDK if he's 100% ....but he needs to SCORE to be effective, and must be taken seriously if he's putting up points ....which will open up passing. Also, make passes that are less risky and preserve our attempt to score points: TURNOVERS are killers.

3. Hyatt needs to finish on bunnies: period.

4. Simpson: slow down - so you can speed up. Throwing passes once you're in the air is disaster. Steals, running the floor, hitting the open man with good passes and hitting some shots (including 3's) seems like a plan,

5. Caleb, needs to score like he did earlier this year, and play tough D sans the extracurricular communication.

6. Mag, keep rebounding, tough D and scoring.

7. Spencer, needs a boost: however that occurs. He gets to the ball and creates steals but needs to get back into his shots with confidence.

8. Use Reiber, Wolf / Chol need to be used for upcoming B!G play: the Centers at Purdue, Mich are active and potentially dangerous vs Cliff (i.e. too many fouls). Let them play....and create some plays for them in limited action.

9. Pike, imo he knows what he's doing, and he's not going to change his personality.

We miss Geo/ RHJ....the latter of which might be a selling point to Dylan!

Men's soccer College Cup final

....will feature Indiana vs. Syracuse. IU has been in more soccer finals than any other school. Hopefully, RU will keep improving and begin regularly making deep runs in the NCAA tournament.

SU is ranked #3? When did that happen. I never thought of them being much of a soccer school before and don't even recall any mention of them when I worked there many years back.

I think that RU - IU will be one of the B1G's biggest rivalries in men's soccer in the years to come, so I am definitely rooting for IU to win this championship.

Need Simpson On The Floor During Crunch Time

I know he has a propensity to turn the ball over … but so does the rest of the roster that plays. The difference with Simpson is that he appears to be able to create his shot off the dribble and he is not to afraid to shoot the ball. Therefore, I think he needs to be on the floor at the end of a game together with PM. If this means sitting Spencer during crunch time so be it; he doesn't want the ball when the game is on the line anyway. And past performance dictates McConnell and Hyatt are not viable options for the closer. It will be painful at times but we must have a player like Simpson with a handle and shooting ability who wants to take the shot when the game is on the line. I believe over time this will bear fruit as Simpson develops into the role of the end of game Alpha we so desperately need since the departures of Baker and RHJ.

BB Recruiting 2023 PG Jamichael Davis commits to Rutgers Hoops

Here's a quick quote from Ryze Hoops Director / Rivals.com Hoops Analyst Dan McDonald.

"He's a good player. An athletic guard and a really good passer. He also has good size and shot it pretty well this summer, but that's been the knock on him."

Thought We Over Passed the Ball Tonight

Which led to numerous turnovers. Seton Hall played an aggressive man to man defense which made it very difficult to get open looks. Credit the Hall’s defense. But, it looked like this was a game where we needed to take guys off the dribble and penetrate or run some isolations and back defenders down. Numerous times Paul had a step on his defender or could have posted up, but instead looked to pass. The overpassing resulted in the clock running down, forced passes, and 19 turnovers.

Folks, this is a SLOW Build

This is necessitated by circumstance. Since most fans are not supporting NIL, we are shut out from the best prospects in the portal. Furthermore, since our facilities are not competitive with the best, it’s yet another knock against us. And as if we didn’t have enough going against us, we have no OC. Offensive players in the portal reasonably want to know what offense they’ll be playing in. CJ Dipre, transfer prospect from Maryland, flat out said this.

That’s just the reality of our situation. So we have to be pragmatic about things.

while we’ll do our best to fulfill needs, via the portal, this won’t be a quick fix situation. We may get a few high profile transfers, at best, but the majority will be the under the radar variety, who fill distinct needs. And most importantly, don’t require NIL.

This will be a marathon, not a sprint. So while we’ll add WRs, TEs, OLs and other positions from the portal, the majority of our growth is going to come from high school recruits with high ceilings, but in need of development. We’re using the portal for stopgap players, not final solutions. So, understandably, improvement is going to take time, since we’re taking the slow methodical approach.

But in the end, kids like Wimsatt, Sam Brown, Moses Walker, Chris Long, Max Patterson, Asamoah, Braithwaite, Wimsatt, Fletcher, and others will lead us to respectability. And the wait will be worth it.

But if you need things faster, feel free to pony up. But certainly not going to hold my breathe.
