Injuries.
Bryan Antoine’s career at Villanova has largely been defined by injuries, setbacks and frustration. He’s dealt with a shoulder surgery, a knee injury and various other ailments during his three years at the Big East school.
Antoine has only played 19 total minutes in the NCAA Tournament this year, and did not play against Houston. He averages just 1.4 points and 1.2 rebounds in 9.5 minutes this season.
That’s quite a contrast to his high school days when Antoine teamed with current
Charlotte Hornets guard Scottie Lewis at Ranney
to win the Tournament of Champions title in 2019. Both players were McDonald’s All-Americans that year.
But since arriving at Villanova as a five-star recruit in 2019, Antoine has played a total of 45 games due to injuries. He was no longer the high-flying dunk-monster and willowy 3-point shooter who wowed fans and trended on social media while at Ranney and with Team Rio on the AAU circuit.
“What everyone knows. shoulder, knee ... he’s had other injuries,” Villanova coach Jay Wright, who has led the program to four Final Fours and two NCAA championships, said Monday on a Zoom call with reporters. “The shoulder was the kind of injury where you don’t touch a basketball for like seven months. You can’t touch a basketball, you can’t lift a weight. They’ve all been incredibly debilitating.”
With Justin Moore going down to a season-ending Achilles injury, N.J. native Bryan Antoine is expected to have a bigger role for Villanova in the Final Four.
