RU shot 21/43 for 49% from 2 point range. RU shot 6/24 from 3 point range for 25%. If they had just said **** it, we’re not taking a three tonight and shot 11/24 (46%) on the additional two point shots then we end up tied. Does this jacked up logic make total sense? No, because no one would go an entire game without shooting a 3. However, this team can’t shoot, it’s not a strength, and they really should be focused on playing strong defense (like the 2nd half) while trying to score as close to the basket as possible as this is the best formula for THIS GROUP to compete and possibly win. It goes against all rules of analytics and offensive efficiency of today’s game, but this team is not built to shoot. The threes they take, whether it ends up being 20 or 25 are wasted opportunities as they’re not making them. Less threes, shoot more twos, slow down the game and DEFEND, DEFEND, DEFEND is the best formula for wins for THIS GROUP.

It’s their shot selection more than anything. We are the worst 2pt FG% team in the nation

I am fine with shooting 3s but just go back and look at when we took them. We had numbers off rebounds and we take bad 3s. We just don’t go for the high % shots. Simpson shot well tonight but so far this season has been cold. Can’t settle

Sounds like a good way to take our offense from atrocious to.. even more atrocious.

Any Rutgers three feels like a waste of time at this point as they miss so many. Gavin needs to pump fake a three once in a while and go to the hole. Simpson may be making a sophomore leap after all. He can shoot the mid ranges all day if he’s going to make them. No one consistently and confidently can be counted on to make threes on this team. Also, no idea why Mag was forcing the offense tonight with 12 shots, most of his shots were ok but he forced two or three.

No 3's is obviously not the answer, but we should never be rushing or forcing 3's with plenty of time on the shot clock

Also, if you aren't shooting well it's OK to pass up an open 3. If you're open it means you also have room to drive the ball to the basket or drive and dish to someone else

Do they make threes? No. Is it realistic to take none? Of course not, I’m not a jackass. But they need to shoot less threes, play slower, focus on defense and stop jacking threes up when they have numbers or pulling up and shooting them with 25 seconds on a shot clock. They don’t make them, period. Take less of them.

I am all for threes, just less of them, and less of them going up so quickly on the shot clock. Slow the game down, we’re not good enough to make them and play at a fast pace. Trying to win games in the 50s would be better strategy than trying to wins in the 70s. This group can’t do it. Probably can’t win in the 50s either, but they have a better chance trying to win in the 50s.

I agree they should not be taking transition threes when they have numbers or a path to the basket. I agree they should not be taking early shot clock contested and/or step back threes. But if you’ve got the open looks in the flow of the offense you have to take them.

We shot 50% from 3 vs. Seton Hall on 24 shots and it was a recipe for our success.

We have to continue to shoot 3’s but be smarter when taking them.

Too many awful shots tonight, especially in the first half (from 2 and 3).

OPEN LOOKS, agreed, 100%. We should take maybe 12-14 a game. We heave up too many that are not open. Even if they take open ones they are not going to hit a high percentage. Cut down the number of threes, 12-14 open ones is fine, but heaving up more is pointless as they don’t make them. This team can’t win games in the 80s and 70s, boring, low scoring and defensive basketball is their best hope at competing and possibly winning.

Yes, for all the talk about this team being built differently it’s basically a prototypical Pike team but with even worse offense.

That’s one game, 50% is not repeatable enough to be relied upon. They should shoot less threes, only open ones in the flow of an offense. The other problem is they don’t have a flowing offense, so there’s that issue too……

Agreed, they’re not built different, they just play faster, jack up more threes but the faster play is not effective. We were told they would play fast, shoot a lot of threes, many players would be threats to make threes, they would have a new speed limit of 75 for the offense instead of a speed limit for the defense. I even remember hearing Gavin could be the leading scorer and would be the go to guy when they need a bucket……let’s just say those reports were off.

Unless you have players who are significantly better from 2 point range, you will lose against an opponent that shoots threes well. The math will always win.
