And then, depression set in...

I'll probably get ripped for this, but the strength of Schiano's teams in respect to the B1G is an illusion. We have NEVER played teams like Ohio State and Michigan in back to back weeks before joining the B1G. In 2006, we played #3 Louisville and then four weeks later played #15 West Virginia. The toughest three game stretch may have been in 2007 when we beat #2 USF (30-27), lost to #7 WVU (31-3), then lost at #13 UConn (38-19). It is important to remember that both USF and UConn finished the 2007 season unranked while WVU finished #6, so the difficulty of that stretch wasn't what it appeared to be at the time.

We have (EDIT)ALMOST NEVER come close to playing 3 teams as good as OSU(2), Michigan(4), and Washington(5), in a single season, in our history. Not even close I'd venture to guess. We literally have gotten hammered by 3 - THREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE - top 5 teams prior to Oct 9th.

Yes, it would have been nice to score a little the last 2 weeks, but we bested Oregon's effort vs Washington lol!

And you'd be wrong. In 2002, we played, #1, 3, 8, and 11 in a 7-week stretch (Miami, VT, ND and TN). And this was Schiano's 2nd year, where the cupboard was still pretty freakin' bare and he did way better than Ash did with our three top teams this year. It doesn't "prove" anything other than we're pretty freakin' bad right now and it does make me question the current staff, at least a little. If it doesn't give you pause, that's fine, but it certainly should make people think.

LOL okay...fine I forgot about that...let's see where those teams finished the season:

Miami #2
VT #14
ND #17
Tenn unranked

....I'm thinking the 3 we lost to, in the 1st 6 weeks of this season, ALL finish in the Top 10.

As I understand it, we had 39 yards of total offense against Michigan, and gave up 600 yards. That is so lopsided that I can understand why there are people out on the ledge or with second thoughts about Ash. But I don't see any alternative to supporting Ash. We're lucky to have him -- who better would we get?

Let's hope we have better success against Illinois this coming weekend.

Yeah, those #'s are rough, but there 3rd string D right now - no joke - is every bit as good as our 1st string D and back-to-back weeks of that hasn't been good for us on either side of the ball. It's scary how far behind we've fallen.

Many thanks to our encouraging friends from the midwest. We have been trying for years to " build a wall around New Jersey," and so far it hasn't worked. Our only success came when we had Schiano who had an in with Florida high school coaches. We can't even build a wall around New Jersey for non-athletes; more good NJ students go out-of-state than should; we are thought of by many as a safety school. And Rutgers, perhaps because of the name, is not known to all as New Jersey's equivalent of Michigan and OSU. Our problems in sports are not peculiar to sports, and those problems have been issues for Rutgers for decades.

I've been saying the same tRUth forever. Don't think Rutgers is as much as a safety school as it used to be though. At worst it may have shifted. Heard recently that t's now tougher to be accepted onto Livingston than else-just the opposite 20+ years ago.

There's no such thing as being "accepted into Livingston" any more. Livingston is no longer a college. It is just a place to live. It's very different to be denied housing on a campus than to be denied admissions into a college. Nevertheless, thank you for your support.

And worse, I understand that only about half of those 39 yards came before the last half of the final quarter, which probably Michigan was playing the water boy. But what alternative is there to hanging on to Ash and hoping he does well in recruiting and developing players? Is there someone else out there who can do better?

We played 2 top 8 teams in a row in Schiano's first year, as I posted earlier, and got pasted, so that was similar, but I agree we didn't play 2 in a row like that once we got much better under Schiano, i.e., from 2005-2011.

It's also interesting to see many of the same people who would tout the computer rankings in the BE era, showing the BE to be on a par with the B1G now saying there's no comparison between the B1G now and the BE back then. I can only assume that's because the B1G improved since then, which is very likely true, especially now and especially in the B1G-East.

Some very B1G schools, hired some very B1G coaches, and ramped things up dramatically over the past half-decade. No doubt.

The coaches and expansion of the conference is dramatically different from 2010-11 range....hires like Kevin Wilson at Indiana, Jerry Kill at Minnesota (since retired) and additions of Nebraska which is usually ranked most years and the emergence of Wisconsin and Michigan State and well coached programs like Pat Fitzgerald at NWestern are tough outs regardless of when you play them.
