ASH Needs to Get of his A$$ and get us some RECRUITS!

Do you not realize this class will not be filled with the players we want. Give the guy a freaking break. He has 4 weeks to get anyone who is willing to play for the school. He hasn't established any relationships yet with recruits. He's probably focusing on 2017 and 2018 recruits already. Ash and staff get a pass for this class because this was Floods recruits. He also gets a pass for the next 2 years if we are the laughing stock of college football because he has to work with Floods 0-2 stars with no talent.

At Rutgers we don't reload, we rebuild and it takes years. He'll get it done.
I'm pretty darn sure what you wrote is not the case as I expect Ash and his staff are working their tails off to get class of 2016 recruits. It is absolutely unacceptable to do nothing for the class of 2016; He does not get a pass. I expect at least 3 commits (with at least 1 3-star) signing NLI by signing day. I think that's reasonable. To say he hasn't established relationships with recruits is bogus. No one said he has to get Jersey recruits this year. In fact, I'm tired of Jersey prima donnas and would rather not get any more recruits from them this year. But he has been recruiting in Ohio for at least the last 2 years and I don't see why he shouldn't try to flip some of those guys. I know he won't go after any OSU commits, but there are plenty of guys he saw film for who are currently committed to upper echelon MAC-level or Cincy-type schools. I expect that he was spending time recruiting those guys when he went back to Columbus.

Also 2 years as a laughingstock on-the-field is completely unacceptable. If 2016 looks like 2015 on the field, I expect that. If 2017 looks like 2015, then Hobbs made a mistake.

I would certainly like a few decent late verbals.... but one three star recruit out of three total is a pretty low bar, assuming the other two are
two star recruits... we would then be falling back on the old "diamond in the rough" two star recruit theory, or they are "Ash men", even at two stars....

Well, I'm trying to be reasonable in my expectations, but if you look at top flight MAC teams, they're all playing with 2-3 star guys.

When Ash was hired I was pilloried on this board when I questioned the hire by stating that he's a guy with absolutely no connection in any way to RU,NJ or even the region and that would hurt his ability top recruit. So, while I am not surprised at all by his slow (ie, non-existent) start in recruiting, even I didn't expect decommits, especially of our only big name recruit at a position where we are thin.

And that was before I saw his opening press conference. I guess I was the only person on the planet not blown away by that for two reasons. First, he made it seem like he was taking over an outlaw program with a horrible record. In fact the problems of the past year on and off the field are aberrational in the context of the last decade or so of the program. His lack of respect for the program was also seen in his failing to say what every single head coach is supposed to say when he takes over a P5 program - whether achievable or absurd or not - "my goal is to win a national championship at Rutgers and we can do it..." His opening press conference certainly did nothing to confirm our status as a relatively successful program over the last dozen years and would have done little to excite the interest of prospective recruits.

As I said on Day 1, I question the wisdom of this hire.

holy crap- it has been the dead period for about as long as he was named our HC. This guy has been working harder then anyone we have ever had here. Let's sum up a few things
1) almost this entire board wanted Flood fired and was more than willing to lose most of this class
2) almost this entire board wanted to go to a different style offense - and this is why we lost Russo

We need to give this guy a little time. And btw- these NJ coaches are by far the worst in the country for their own home state.
 
The coaching carousel has not only affected RU. Other teams with coaching changes have had quality commits looking around. It seems Ash and his staff are making inroads with some of these. Some in NJ and some in the Midwest. After the dust clears I would think RU gets a fair amount of recruits that will be contributors. Don't forget there are a few quality early enrollees that may play a role next year.
It was almost universally agreed that a coaching change would affect this recruiting class but the benefit of a new direction would be worth that gamble.
I would expect that the install of the new offense and defense will have a greater positive impact on the field than the negative impact of the loss of the decommits.

If you couldn't tell the talent difference vs the rest of the Big Ten then you're blind and should find a new team to root for.

...some of you seem to forget that Harbaugh, after being hired by Michigan under similar circumstances in terms of time frames, had a half-empty class at UM last year and couldn't flip recruits away from Flood.

...what a difference a year makes, eh? Give the guy a friggin' CHANCE...

Houston had only 1 -4 star recruit for the last 4 years. They now have a few 4 star recruits in 2016 because of the great year they had in 2015. Houston won mainly with 3 and 2 stars recruits.
The majority of the commits in that Houston class committed before the season even started including the 5 star Ed Oliver.

Jim Harbaugh can afford to do that. Brady Hoke was steadily bringing in top 20 recruiting classes before that. We don't have that level of talent base and on top of that, we let 6 guys go. We can't have a 13-member recruiting class or we'll be in the same boat Kansas was in last year.
 
But RUSK you can't bring in kids who probably won't contribute just for numbers sake. If Ash and Co can only get 4-5 kids who they believe can be a contributor, then a 16-17 recruit class is something we'll have to live with.

I don't think anyone doubts that Ash is working hard. But at the end of the day, it's not how hard you work, but whether you can get results. It's fine that we have decommits. If they don't fit the new scheme, I understand. But where are the verbals from players who do fit the new scheme? Dead period affects all schools the same. but Maryland signed two four-star offensive guards between December 18 and January 2. Scott Frost is tearing it up at UCF, picking up 5-6 guys. And just 'cause someone has concerns in the early going doesn't mean they're a Golden-lover.

Oh, if he can sign 4-5 kids, that's on par with what I would expect. Just getting antsy that none of those guys have verbaled. Also, my understanding is you can only carry over a certain number of schollies from year to year. Your max # is 85, but I don't think you can sign 10 one year and 40 the next. Is that right?!?

Pencil in 2018 as the year we get away from multiple 30 point losses. Lots of 3 and outs with a fast paced offense without players to match. Tired defenses give up lots of points. Oh well, lots of tickets available.

I think Ash and company will do well on signing day. He'll get a few kids previously committed to other schools which will be a pretty impressive start for him. Next year he will do even better.
Some people in this thread are just trying to get some complaining in before that happens.

When Ash was hired I was pilloried on this board when I questioned the hire by stating that he's a guy with absolutely no connection in any way to RU,NJ or even the region and that would hurt his ability top recruit. So, while I am not surprised at all by his slow (ie, non-existent) start in recruiting, even I didn't expect decommits, especially of our only big name recruit at a position where we are thin.

And that was before I saw his opening press conference. I guess I was the only person on the planet not blown away by that for two reasons. First, he made it seem like he was taking over an outlaw program with a horrible record. In fact the problems of the past year on and off the field are aberrational in the context of the last decade or so of the program. His lack of respect for the program was also seen in his failing to say what every single head coach is supposed to say when he takes over a P5 program - whether achievable or absurd or not - "my goal is to win a national championship at Rutgers and we can do it..." His opening press conference certainly did nothing to confirm our status as a relatively successful program over the last dozen years and would have done little to excite the interest of prospective recruits.

As I said on Day 1, I question the wisdom of this hire.


So in essence you were not blown away by Ash due to the following reasons.....

A) He answered a question honestly concerning the outside perception of RU's program based on the problems etc.

B) He took a pragmatic approach to level setting with regards to goals for the program and failed to boast and spew lies.

Same mentality why they never accepted Julie Hermann and why Pernetti is worshiped here (even though there is legitimate argument for Pernetti being one of the worse RU ADs ever).

The second group is why I think Ash really has his work cut out for him. Some of these "fans" are in a position of influence and they will undermine Ash and his efforts any chance they get. Although I do believe there is hope because Ash probably understands what he is facing which is why he tried to purged the football program of any remnants of Flood. Alignment. That's the key.

The vast majority of them are in much less of a "position of influence" than they would like other to think. Trust me on this one.

Well said. I think it is more than fair to critique someone based on bad performance or output. I find it quite silly (in a whiny biatch sort of way) to continue to criticize a brand new coach (either directly or in a passive-agressive way) based on the fact that the candidate that they wanted did not get hired.

Yes - some of that 2nd group are current /past Monmouth County folks & /or variously connected to Red Bank Catholic ... and for one reason or another were hopelessly smitten with the idea of Golden as HC .... and have yet to move on.

I think folks have learned that if you post something crazy or nonsensical then you'll get alot of responses.

If you haven't noticed, Ash isn't trying to be a used car salesman to get recruits, he is building a program and he is doing it the right way. If things aren't happening fast enough for you then maybe you should take a step back, then get back on board when he cleans up the mess he inherited.

He said clearly in today's presser that he wasn't just going to hand out scholarships just to fill the class, that's no way to build a program for long term success. It seems he is trying to build a positive, winning program for the long term, as opposed to the program the last regime put together.
I have to remind myself sometimes that I have to be patient with this new staff. That there is a right way to do things and a wrong way. By being honest with hard work and not using used car salesman tricks is usually the right way to go. It's the same way I built my business. I never bull sh*tted customers and always told them the truth on price and when we could start. I lost plenty of jobs this way in the beginning. We also did great work(yes my guys say I'm anal) and stood behind our work. Our reputation began to build. Then when the recession hit my company sailed right through as our reputation carried us. Sure prices dropped but while others sat home my guys continued to work and we weren't the lowest prices out there.

I see a lot of these traits in what Ash is doing. He's telling us the truth and I think they will put in the work to get it done. I've seen plenty of companies use used car salesman's tricks they come into an area and once word get's around they move on to another area. Eventually they are gone(bankrupt). I have a feeling this may happen to our friend out in pennsy as his shtick is beginning to wear thin.
