BACATOLOGY 2/26: NCAA TOURNAMENT ANALYSIS

wow did you see that....kentucky wins 91-89 at the buzzer after Miss State clawed back from 8 down with just over a minute to go and had hit a deep 3 with 8 seconds to tie it.

Kentucky looks headed to the 4 line eventually and Wisconsin looks headed toward the 5 win or lose tonight

Mississippi State no shame losing but will remain in that 9 seed range

CBS has nothing to do with this. Zero. Zippo. Yale is 1-1 with Cornell and Princeton will be 1-1 with Cornell at 9 pm on Saturday night. Princeton might have been doomed by the St. Joe's road loss. No Quad 1 would play them, so no one can say that they should schedule up. They can't. If Princeton wins the Ivies, they will be a 12. If Yale,a 13. Both are very dangerous. Perhaps Princeton more so becaise the shoot close to 50% treys and Xaivian is an almost impossible match-up.He is so much like Trae Young as a sophomore that it is uncanny.

Kentucky offensively can beat anybody when they score. If they play just a little D…
Great college basketball game.
Miss State pretty good too.

Sheppard impressive Freshman.

Only reason I was watching was because refuse to pay ridiculous Peacock. Shame on B1G.

No one will play Princeton except RU of major powers. So unfair to them. Top Ivys can play with most and usually are a better seed than they get.

i hate peacock because i just cant switch channels..have to go and say Peacock and then wait for it to load, its about a minute process

just terrible that the Big 10 would do something like this

I really look forward to Peacock games these days. Think they do a great job of covering everything with good pregame shows, postgame, good studio crew, good announcers, etc. Plus, never have to worry about a game before it running late.

too bad maybe they are not scheduling enough mid majors of note
Who do you have in mind? My guess opponents more gun shy than power conferences? Hofstra and ODU have been good and borderline bubbles last few years. Furman and Duquesne not horrible. Nor is Delaware. You may have a very good point with Del Valley and Bryn. I don’t know who they are? Lol! Stupid Princeton lol!

Probably can write the obituary for Cincinnati as they lose at Houston to drop to 16-12

some have said the bubble is strong this year, I think its turning out weaker as we get closer

Wake Forest is now losing at Notre Dame by 1 midway through the 2nd half.

A loss to the Irish will bounce Wake Forest back out of the field

Wake loses. Uh oh.
Kansas loses. Drop a seed?
Iowa lives another day.
Texas looks like will beat Tech on road.
Most disappointing team in country, Arkansas, loses to Vandy.
Akron bad loss.
NC State bad loss
Pitt a loss.
Not a good day for ACC

Utah State with an off balance bank shot with 1 second left to tie it up and send it to OT at Fresno St (and possibly avoid a low level Q3 loss if they can pull this out).

Not much annoys me more than teams not fouling up 3 that late.

Game is a free feed at https://themw.com/watch/

BYU will lock it up definitely as they are about to beat Kansas on the road. Likely to move up to a 6 probably flip flopping with Texas Tech
I think also interesting if Kansas falls a seed or at least on S curve or geography.

just wrapping up the late action from MWC

San Diego State got a surprisingly tough challenge from San Jose State but won at home 72=64...looking good somwhere on the 4-5 line

Boise State routed Air Force 79-48 yet most of their wins lately coming from the bottom feeder. While NET numbers are going up their seeding might be sliding to 9/10

UNLV forced into overtime to win at Wyoming 75-69 to reamin just one game out of first

League leading Utah State averted disaster by hitting a late 3 to force overtime at lowly Fresno State and then triumped in the extra session 77-73 but their net dropped from 29 to 35

Nevada led Colorado State virtually the entire game but a 90% free throw shooter missed 3 of 4 late just as CSU was hitting everything. Rams played took miss and calmly hit smooth jumper to tie the game at 74 with about 2.5 seconds. That same guy calmly took the ball dribbled to mid court near sideline and swished a 3 to win the game for the Wolfpack. Wow one of the best finishes I have seen all year and I really look forward to the late night MWC action on tv

Nevada has the worst net of all the MWC bubbles but has some advantages. They still probably sit somewhere as a 9/10. Colorado State has lost 4 of 5, their resume is still strong but cannot afford slipping up against any bottom feeders they have left. Probably sitting still somewhere as a 8-9

New Mexico was not in action and they are the hardest to figure out. The 2nd strongest NET in the league at 25 yet perhaps the least impressive resume of the MWC bubbles but they do have a sweep over Nevada. Remember they have to travel to both Utah and Boise

Somehow losing at a horrid Notre Dame only dropped Wake's NET 2 points..that is just wrong and a flaw in the system. Irish move from Q3 to Q2 with that win so its not even counting as a bad loss for Wake who remember is just 6-10 in Q1/2. Tough call I am trying to figure out between Wake and Utah right now for that last spot. I know its not suppose to matter but Utah did beat Wake earlier this year.

LAST 4 BYES: NEVADA, MISSISSIPPI STATE, SETON HALL, VIRGINIA
LAST 4 IN: GONZAGA, WAKE FOREST, NEW MEXICO, PROVIDENCE

FIRST FOUR OUT: UTAH, VILLANOVA, BUTLER, COLORADO
NEXT FOUR OUT: JAMES MADISON, TEXAS A & M, KANSAS STATE, IOWA
ON DECK: MISSISSIPPI, DRAKE, SAINT JOHN'S, MEMPHIS

I will say there is a large gap between where Mississippi State is on the 10 line and where Seton Hall is on the 10 line. A last 6 in catagory is more appropriate as everyone above that is relatively safe right now.

Note that head-to-head results are one of the things called out in the resources available to the committee...so I'd say that it "matters", but also less than many fans would probably want to believe (you always here people commenting with "how can team A be ahead of team B, they got swept").

Can you speak to what's creating that gap? I feel like the profiles look fairly similar. MSU has better predictive metrics but far worse bad losses. Anything else I'm missing?

Mississippi State actually did something out of conference....beating Northwester and Washington State...what did SHU do

and yes the metrics being 30 spots difference does matter.

14-8 in Q1/2/3 as opposed to 10-9 for shu

The Southern loss is preventing them from being a lock on the 9 line

not to mention SHU is likely headed to 18-11 after their next two games...want to move ahead of Mississippi State, then win them

He speaks the emmis.

Marquette routs Providence 91-69..not a good look for the Friars who are 3rd team in the field with home games vs Nova and UConn to come
