so for everyone saying this is not on the coaches and it's lack of talent, let's just look at Pikiell vs. Ash. You could argue that Pikiell came into a worse situation as he didn't even have a full roster.

Pikiell-
1) hired a real staff with proven track records.
2) he was aggressive getting juco kids to fill major voids
3) its clear this team is better coached and vastly improved

We are 3-0 for the first time in years and won our first away game since 2014! Now I know it's early and we have not played anyone great yet, but this is real progress.

I don't think any of us expected to win many games this year in football, but I would have bet anything that we would not have been shut out 4 games. It's funny (or sad) now that i thought Vegas was nuts to have us at 22 point underdogs to Washington! I think we all drank to cool aid and expected a much better coached team and would have been more competitive in games.

So while I get we have little talent, good coaching would not have ended in 4 shut outs. If Ash is serious about fixing this he needs a real OC. Merinher needs to take a smaller role.

We are stuck with Ash for now. So lets just hope he can make some adjustments this offseason and hold together the recruiting class.

In the meantime, let's get excited about basketball. Coach Pikiell and staff are the real deal!

Imagine this same exact staff in 3 years from now.
We probably still be at 2-10 or 3-9.
Ash needs a major overhaul now.

Always liked Pikiell better than Ash. Just his attitude, enthusiasm for Rutgers, and ability to hire a staff, but most of all the fact that he had success as a head coach, winning.

BBall will have a rough year too. but, I like his approach better.

As for Ash, I don't think he's a fail, but he needs to rethink his staff. Big time.

Silly comparison, basketball is a quick fix sport, only 12 players and on any night with good shooting a team can win. While im excited for the bb season i realize we have beaten nobody. Football teams have 100 players and schedule is far tougher. Give ash time like Schiano got, he will be fine.

We have been hearing this quick fix bball argument since 1991. The history doesn't support the quick fix argument.

I'm glad Hobbs got RWJBarnabas on board but he will ultimately be judged on the Ash hire which will make or break his legacy. Hobbs needs to take some ownership and force Ash to get someone experienced running the offense. Julie Hermann made Flood fire coordinators and that was the right move.

When you have an assistant become a first time head coach, they usually struggle firing someone since they haven't ever had to do that in the past. Hobbs needs to give Ash a little nudge.

It's easier to turn around a roster of 13 scholarship (no limit to any year) players in one year for basketball than it is 85 scholarships (limited 25 scholarships in one year) when good football teams have good players at least 2 deep worth of talent need to be competitive. It's not like Coach Ash can overhaul all the bad talent in one year and replace 40-50 players in one year. We have depth at some positions but overall the talent is bad. At least in basketball, Coach Pikiell added 5 guys and Nigel Johnson who was already sitting out.

Hiring a staff for a B1G program where no one was a head coach was a big mistake. At this point te whole offensive and special teams coaches need to go. Keep Ash, even though he showed up with a know-it-all attitude.

U do realize Bball rebuilds are much easier then football, correct?

The point is that there is a visible change in the bball program, for the better. We are rebounding, playing defense, and look prepared. Don't forget that we were down big every 1q against our weakest opponents in football.

I think it's silly that we keep comparing this season to the early ones schaino inherited. The program today is lightyears ahead of where it its today.

What it really means is that Jordan was a much better recruiter than Flood.

Of course i realize it only takes a few players to get better in basketball, but if its really that easy why have we been so bad in bball for so long?

My point here was that Pikiell was a proven coach and he hired a real staff and we are seeing results. Ash, was the opposite.

There are three points in this thread to respond to:

1.) Are we better or worse than last year? Offensively we're far worse. Injuries and a lack of a true QB makes us look even worse (while Laviano was our QB last year as well, this year we have a system not made for him). The new question becomes was it worth changing systems and taking the lumps this year while doing so? Defensively, it's up in the air. No pass rush. No linebackers. Young and inexperienced DBs. That all said, defense is so-so this year. Could be much worse. Will definitely benefit next year with the extra experience.

2.) Did MBB do it correctly with the assistant coach hirings? Yes. Rutgers did right with its football HC but rolled the dice on inexperienced coaches to round out the staff. Snake eyes on the come out roll.

3.) Is it 1000x easier to fix MBB than football? Absolutely. We were playing a 6'6 SF at center at times last year. This year we bring in a half dozen guys at 6'9+ and OMG we can rebound now! Haha.
