Big Ten Build Fund Progress

There is still time to donate & become part of the process of making Rutgers B1G.

I'm a fundraising captain... Email me for info on how to donate & join my team

TeamMegg@Gmail.com

@RUBand did you join recently? you had sent me a message awhile ago that you wanted to join my team, if you have not yet signed up with anyone else you can still do that.

Be careful. After pledging $1,000 to the Build Fund I had to explain to my wife why we can't get a new washer/dryer.

I finally bucked up last week. FWIW, The site is not very donor friendly if you don't want to make a monthly payment and what to do something like donating stock.

Thank you for donating.

I will bring this information back to our next meeting. I believe the site was set up for what they felt the majority of donations would be :cash on a one time, quarterly or monthly basis. I'm not sure how many people are actually donating stock.

It should be promoted more prominently for sure. For anyone who invests, if you have a stock with a huge capital gain there are additional significant tax advantages to donating that stock to RU (or any other charity) because you don't pay tax on the unrealized capital gain when you transfer it, but you still get the full tax deduction on the total value of the stock. This has always allowed me to give a little more than I otherwise might be able to afford.

We need to step up for this call otherwise don't complain about facilities.

I finally made a $1K donation recently on top of my usual wrestling donation.

If you can give $20 give $20. If you can give $20K do it. Looking at the facilities and support throughout the conference, I finally realize how important this cause is.

updated to show 66 million. Looks like they only added 10MM from the deal and not 18mm. Any insights?
$8 million of the $18 million is going to the sports medicine facility that is going to be part of the building. That wasn't part of the original budget which is probably why they left that out.

We haven't even broken the 2k mark in terms of number of donors? There are like 450000 living alumni. Aren't there around 20k season ticket holders for football alone?

Doesn't mean that many people don't donate - it means that not too many have donated to this particular fund. We have so many different areas to donate to that its unfair to use the numbers you did.

I guess but the Big Ten Build Fund has been by far the largest push for donations ever by RU athletics. There are billboards everywhere. It is being promoted very strongly. I not saying I expect 450,000 donors but less than 2k just seems very small. Of course not every RU alum is a football fan, nor does every alum want to donate to athletics. You would think out of that many alumni you would get more than 2k. A lot of the big donations don't even come from Rutgers alumni.

I remember messaging you that I would join your team, looked on the form to sign up on your team, could not figure out how to

You know what's weird..? I know Rutgers people that don't even know about this campaign. My roommate from back at RU thought we were talking about that "college ave renovation fund" .

I'm thinking this campaign needs more of a grassroots effort to supplement the big gift efforts that our athletic department is working on. The team captain idea is very good.

This is interesting. Is your roommate local or out of state? A sports guy or not? As a Captain I'd be happy to reach out & bring him up to speed. RU gave us all lots of materials to help spread the word.

The numbers of contributors are poor. Just because your roommate has his head in the sand is not an indication of a failed effort. If he has made any effort in the years to give back to or stay in touch with Rutgers he would have been communicated with regularly. If he visited the website or even read the paper it would be clear.

Bad example.

Honestly if it weren't for this forum, I would have no clue about it either. The only other place I see it posted is NJ.com, which I only visit because of links posted here.

Rutgers has sent emails and has put information about the Build Fund in the Alumni Magazine. Additionally they have sent out post cards about the fund.

I will reach out to the Fund people to see if this information is only sent to season ticket holders &/or athletic donors or if it was sent out to all alumni, because I honestly don't know the answer. I do know it's in the Alumni magazine but if you just recycle it and don't read it you would not have seen it.

@drewbagel423 Serious question: what way do you think RU could have done a better way of getting the information to you? Are you on Social Media (Facebook/Twitter/Instagram)? Do you receive the alumni magazine? Are you a season ticket holder to any sport at RU?

The Captains have a meeting on 11/15 and I would be happy to bring back any ideas/questions/information that this board has.

I get emails and mailings darn near every month. I am sure that because I have created a link to Rutgers (heck, AT LEAST one )

@jtung230 the Captains' program ends December 31st. I am pretty sure, however, that you can sign up to donate after that date.

The captains signed on to get 25 new donors between July 1 and December 31. We have our own internal competition to see who can get the most new donors signed up. If you haven't donated yet and would like to do so please email me so I can tell you how to join my team.

where are all those guys who said they were waiting to contribute since they professed it "didn't matter"-- all lame excuses --these numbers are a disgrace

If you have the slightest interest in RU athletics, it would be impossible not to be aware of the fund raising drive.

Thanks for the clarification. I already donated and will add to it soon. Keep up the good work.

Actually his example is perfect...this is where we need to change

The folks that had their head in the sand, the folks that didnt ever donate...getting those folks involved is how we are going to reach 100 million. We're not getting there with the just the hardcore fans. How we do that? I have no idea. I do know that Rutgers is ramping up their alumni networking as I've seen RU increase its communications efforts with the Houston alumni here.

Keep in mind that we have one of the lowest donation rates in the country...it's really pathetic

@DanceAppreciationTA how can RU do better with the alumni across the country? What would be a huge positive for you and your Houston group?

Honestly, I have no idea and it's not my field of expertise...it's such a complicated issue where there are so many factors involved on why someone might not donate (tradition/culture, pride, scandals, not being approached for donations..etc)

That being said...we had a RU Alumni Relations gentleman come down here in Houston and conduct personal lunches/dinners. I'm not saying RU needs to do that for everyone as that is obviously not possible, but some sort of personal touch would be nice...not sure how you do that? But something where it just doesn't seem like they want money and end of conversation

On a side note, Rutgers overall endowment fails, IMO, because we never had a proper system to stay in touch with alumni. I bet Rutgers doesn't even have current contact information for half of the 500k alumni

FWIW, despite consistently giving money (4-figures) annually to RU, surprisingly I never received a call directly soliciting my donation to the Big10 build fund. It seems that there should be an active phone solicitation of existing (and new) donors to pique their interest in donating. Emails largely get ignored or go to spam.

I think you did answer the question. "the personal touch". that is important. Maybe not personal lunches/dinners but at least to start with the Houston Alumni meetingor the San Fran alumni and so on. Find a bar/restaurant/meeting room and announce a gathering for all local alumni... then they can do the personal lunch thing.

@RU-ROCS good point. I'll bring that up as well

I graduated in 1980 and know a good number of people from that era. The current RU administration has to come to terms with the fact that the university did not do a great job over the course of a few decades with its alumni outreach. For some of them RU's recent fundraising efforts are like getting a Facebook friend request from a high school or college friend who you haven't heard from in 30 or 40 years and then having him immediately start hitting you up for a loan. It's going to take time and a lot of work to rebuild the connections.
