BTN Tonight : Doomsday Scenario

Of course football and basketball support themselves. That's essentially true at all schools. Yet, Rutgers still spends much more than every other FBS school. Barchi is not holding back money. We still spend more on athletics than everyone else, just like we did before Barchi.

This popular myth that Rutgers does not spend on athletics is just plain false.

We do not SPEND more. We have the LARGEST SUBSIDY. These are 2 different things. Since it can be assumed that basketball and football are revenue neutral that means the entire subsidy goes to support Olympic and other non-revenue sports. The way to lower the subsidy is to spend more on football so that we generate more revenue to support other sports.

what I was trying to say but you did it a whole lot better and much more concise.

Please re-read my posts on this topic. I'm not arguing against spending more. I'm pointing out the fallacy in the notion that somehow Rutgers will not spend money on sports.\

We SPEND more OF THE UNIVERSITY GENERAL FUNDS on athletics than any other FBS school. That defines the subsidy. It is fact. Of course the places that fill a 100K stadium spend more overall on football. They get revenue for all those tickets they sell.

So I say again, saying that "Rutgers is cheap when it comes to sports" is complete and utter Bull Sh**.

Agree. What's happening here is no joke, and if allowed to continue Rutgers football will not only go back to being a joke, but it will be a much more visible joke on a much bigger stage, playing championship caliber teams and getting slaughtered on a regular basis. And all that while the tOSU's, MSU's, Nebraska's, etc., come to Jersey on recruiting trips and take top kid after top kid back home with them, who'll then help those teams bulldoze us each and every time we go up against them.

In truth, I wanted Flood and co. gone after year #1. But that said, bit by bit he began to win me over and I honestly thought he might be showing signs of growing into the job. -But the email/grade issue and the way he handled it was so bumbling and inept, his, (supposed), lack of knowledge concerning the rules regarding contact between between coaches and faculty members was so inexcusable, and his almost kamikaze-like determination to keep doing the same thing over and over again whether it's working or not, without the slightest hint of being open to even trying something, or someone, new, pretty much have blown whatever positive feelings I had developed about him as RU's HC out of the water.

KF is a good guy and a good family man, but he wasn't prepared to be put into the position of running a major college football program, and after 3 and 1/3 seasons that reality is beginning to show. -And as the post quoted above states, it's up to the administration to recognize that and do something to prevent this from becoming "The Shea Era: Part Deux"...or even worse.

Very well said. It's why I started my "bring back Schiano" thread. Obviously, it doesn't have to be Schiano, but Barchi and Co. need to step up here. I'd can Flood yesterday for the horrible judgment in his academic missteps, combined with the loss of discipline on his team, but assuming he finishes out the year, and assuming we only get to 4-5 wins, he would then need to go at the end of the year and we'd need to open up the wallet for a quality coach. We can't afford to let "revenue neutral" lead to "revenue gone," due to fans abandoning the team.

Isn't that more or less what I said? The point is they don't care if we suck, though big ten fans do. I doubt the big ten leadership expects much out of us in the football field. At this point I tend to agree with them.
For the perspective of the schools, us sucking is a positive - less competition.

This too shall pass.

Whether you love or hate everything about Rutgers football, you keep coming back for more. That is the key.

Ahead of Purdue, Maryland, and probably Northwestern (as a private school they dont have to report), right behind Indiana and Illinois.

Also well ahead of all non-P5 schools except UConn.

So we are in the bottom of the Big Ten, and closer to the middle for P5 schools in general - considering that we were in what is now a non-P5 conference, is pretty much expected.

In essence - we are still running on a Big East/AAC budget - middle to bottom of the BCS, but highly subsidized, which isnt a surprise given that we arent getting anything close to Big Ten payouts, and still have a combined BB and FB fan base that is Big East in size (bigger FB than most BE, smaller BB than most BE FB schools.)

You have to believe that "the plan" at RU was to allow Flood to develop and prove himself for a few seasons during our transition phase into the B1G, that is to give him an opportunity to demonstrate leadership and some measure of "on field" success and recruit talent, while RU simultaneously tries to raise program $ from private fundraising as it awaits B1G $ income. He made inroads last year. But this year Flood clearly stumbled. It will be held against him, and rightfully so.

Can he survive and redeem himself? Tough road, for sure, especially with his absence on the sidelines for two more games. Given the schedule, the odds are against him. It's possible. But unlikely. If he weren't such a nice guy, it would be much easier to cut him loose now. Sometimes, though, you just have to fire a nice guy. A win vs. Kansas and a strong showing vs. MSU will help his cause tremendously. Conversely, . . . his fate may be sealed with a pair of losses heading into the OSU game.

Speaking of that OSU game in NB, once upon a time, that date was circled on the calendar as "the game" for me, an indicator that we have arrived as a program. Now, while I will be there with the old gang, the interest is hardly what it once was. And that's on Flood.

I wonder if all this does not have a "no such thing as bad press" effect in the end.

Yes we will need to hire the right people to handle the clean up, but this team still has talent, it still has the recruiting grounds, it's still in the Big 10. If the next guy comes in cleans it up and wins games? The headlines are there waiting for him.

I think it being midseason is the only reason he is still here, and if follows that he will likely be here till seasons end.

But I can't see him winning enough games to save his job past this year. Unfortunate as it may be, but any further issues will be seen as RU enabling a program out of control, and that stigma will carry for years, even if the program is clean for 3 years, if a player get's arrested for beating up a student in 2018 while Flood is still at the helm? Can't have it.

Ummm. No.

I think it is pretty well established that the Big Ten invited Rutgers for our TV market and to establish a foothold on the East Coast.
We've been on their radar since PSU joined but at that time our athletics esp FB stadium and fanbase left much to improve on. We on all other fronts though are just what a typical B1G school is....a natural move. The expansion of the stadium and the growth of our fanbase along with decent FB finally gave them the excuse...and our demo/market seals it. I don't get how ANY conference wouldn't want the flag bearing state school of NJ between Philly and NYC irregardless of athletic success. If i was a Barber or Grocer would I want my shop in the densely populated and wealthy area's of NJ or on Mt Nittany.....Madison Ave or Mayberry. Common sense or economics. Unreal it took this long..only in NJ can you fail to economize or capitalize on such strategic advantages for so long.

The big ten invited us mostly so they could better mine new jersey for talent and households. They did not invite us for our illustrious history of 3rd and 4th tier bowl games. Our current administration, like past ones, is content to ride the coattails of this arrangement and allow other states to benefit from talent educated and trained from k through 12 by new jersey tax payers. It makes no sense to me why our administration or legislature sees this as a beneficial arrangement but they do. The older I get the more I realize far too many people are in positions of power who don't belong there.
And for some reason we keep voting these clowns in....and then they appoint more clowns into positions they abuse. Jersey for some reason is better at this than most states.
