Carino on Derek Simpson

I am glad that Jerry Carino just put up an article raving about Lenape's Simpson who will be on RU next season. Many on this site have been ripping our recruiting for next season's class but I have raved about Simpson for months. He made All State last year as a junior and led his team to a huge win over Elizabeth at Elizabeth last year. Just because a guy is not ranked as a Top 100 player doesn't mean he isn't very good. I hope someone can link the article here and that maybe some who are not supporting our guys and keep ripping Steve and our staff on recruiting just might become more passionate about RU. That would be a nice change.

Thank you for posting this. I just wrote that someone needs to post this as I am tired of people here ripping our incoming recruits, our players & our staff. I have raved about Derek Simpson since last year. He is one outstanding point guard who made NJ All State last year as a junior. We need people supporting RU basketball not constantly ripping it down.

Happens with every fanbase, though those voices are certainly more pronounced here.

Why do this to yourself?

He’s a 3 star PG with mid major offers. More often than not, this type of player is who they are.

3 star players are a lottery. Sometimes you get Geo Baker, Myles Johnson, Mike Williams, Myles Mack, Eli Carter, or Gil Biruta.... sometimes you get Austin Carroll, Dwayne Foreman, Ibrahima Diallo, or Issa Thiam.

Need good 3-star guys on the team, but generally won't find success in the B1G unless there are a few 4-to-5 star guys sprinkled in with them.

Exactly, which is why I look at offers.

Personally I wouldn’t put Geo or Mike Williams in the same level of Myles Mack or Eli Carter but that’s another topic.

If kids can ball, legit programs will find them and offer them (generally speaking).

So actual production at the college level doesn't matter??
Of course actual production is the most important thing, but the offers will generally tell you what that production will be.

Look at our most talented players offer list in recent history.

I’d argue this is true even more so in this day and age with social media. It’s not the early 2000s anymore

Offers are also frequently a crapshoot.

Yes, offers are often a crapshoot. However, the sentiment has been more towards disregarding them over the past two years since a lot of our recruits don’t have very many of them.

This kid has had terrible high school coaching I think he has great potential to get better over his college career

Yep. And 'star' ratings are just OPINIONS. Douby was on his way to Hofstra before we nabbed
him. He went on to the league. Eugene wasn't a priority for anyone but us. He too is
in the league. Unlike, for example, Myles Mack, Donnell Lumpkin, Mike Williams, JR Inman, etc
who were good to decent players for us, way more highly regarded than the aforementioned, and
who never had a prayer of playing at the next level. Like Billy Beane said to his scout in
Moneyball --- 'You think you know but you don't'

Yeah I just fundamentally disagree.

Even in the same year, compare the offer lists and star ratings for our two center commitments from 2017..... Doucoure and Johnson. Before the balls were rolled out there was a much different expectation than after they started seeing the floor.

Offers are directional, just like stars are, and need to be taken with similar grains of salt. Early commits stop getting/reporting offers, while some offers reported earlier on in the recruiting cycle end up not being committable later on.

Pike seems very excited about Simpson. Coach Hobbs described him as a quicker / more athletic version of Geo.
Woolfolk on the other hand - albeit a big body - appears to be more of a project.

This kid is the son of an all time player at a D1 school. Could have headed to a basketball power private school and played for an AAU team associated with a sneaker brand yet he decided to play for his local school and played AAU for his Dad all while displaying high level ability to then be identified by the RU staff locally.

Time will tell what level player RU got and Simpson will be going up against high level P5 players this season and he will get to display his ability for all to further evaluate.

Going to be fun to watch this kid rise to the occasion and play above his rating.

GO RU

Honest question - can he shoot? Not score, but actually shoot from around the arc. If so, this can be what rights the ship.

I have faith in Pikiell and his staff when it comes to evaluating talent. It has had several more hits than misses.

Consecutive seasons with a record below .500 would make me start to wonder about Pikiell and Co. Until then, it has my full support.
Here is my shot at grading the "under the radar" looking at current overall body of work:

A: Geo,
B: Ron, Myles J
C: Paul M, Caleb M
D: Peter K.
F: Souf
Incomplete but current trend grade:
B: Mowat
C: Miller (not enough data so "middle of the pack")
D: Palmquist, Reiber

Overall, positive (assuming C or higher where C is capable contributor) but not way higher.

Don't forget E. Omoruyi, Bullock, and Thiam (who committed before Pike was hired, but recommitted to Pike)

Myles Johnson gets a B?
Geo gets a higher rating than Ron?
Caleb is a C?

Feel free to redo. Myles was awesome defensively but inconsistent offensively. Ron would be higher, but too inconsistent. Caleb same, but less overall production than Ron.

Myles was a pretty lopsided contributer but deserves an A when he was a serious contender for B1G defensive POY.

Geo and Ron are even IMO.

Caleb is a B for me. Very solid other than the abysmal shooting to start this season.
Fair assessment. How would you compare relative to B1G overall?

You guys worry about recruiting. I will log on the internet and look at standings.

we are at about zero correlation between a players “recruitment value” and GRF “on court value”. It is trending towards negative correlation.

Yes, offers are often a crapshoot. However, the sentiment has been more towards disregarding them over the past two years since a lot of our recruits don’t have very many of them.

Also, several of the recruits we did get with a lot of offers haven't really panned out for us. Looking at the guys we've recruited out of HS that then played for Rutgers (so, commits plus Hyatt) that have had multiple high-major offers:

2017 - Doucoure: 4 stars, offers from UConn, Creighton, GTech, Oregon, Pitt, SHU, SJU
- Started as a freshman, but pretty clearly saw he wasn't able to compete at the B1G level. Transferred down to easier competition.

2018 - Mathis: 4 stars, offers from UConn, Memphis, Minnesota, Missouri, NC State, Providence, SJU, Texas A&M, USC, VTech, WVU, Xavier
- On-again-off-again starter but didn't thrive, losing his starting spot and falling off in production last year before transferring.

2018 - Hyatt: 4 stars, offers from LSU, GTech, Louisville, Nebraska, Oregon, Pitt, Providence, SHU, SJU, TTech, USC, Vandy, VTech
- Committed to LSU and people saw this as a lost recruiting battle at the time. Didn't really make much of a mark at LSU and transferred to Rutgers, where he also isn't really making a mark so far.

2019 - Mulcahy: 3 stars, offers from BC, UConn, Florida, GTech, Marquette, Northwestern, SHU, VTech, Xavier
- Has been a starter for us, but hasn't really found his offense and has limitations on defense. Primarily a distributor who brings intangibles.

2020 - Jones: 4 stars, offers from Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, LSU, TCU, USC.
- Not really seeing a lot of minutes or production so far after a half-year redshirt last year.

2020 - Omoruyi: 4 stars, offers from Arizona, ASU, Auburn, UConn, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Memphis, Miami, NC State, Pitt, SHU, South Carolina, SJU, Cuse, WVU
- Starting center and legit B1G player, first bona fide elite talent out of the "multiple offers" crowd we've seen come through here since Pike arrived.

Myles Johnson gets a B?
Geo gets a higher rating than Ron?
Caleb is a C?

Myles, Geo, Jacob, Eugene and Ron all get As

Shaq Carter B

Everyone including Mathis else C or below for now..caleb could easily push up higher. Large group of players here too soon to call..some will trend to B others to D and F

Fs go to Kiss, Bullock, Mensah Doucoure
