Coaching Carousel 2021

Mike Leach is 60 years old. He is being paid $5 million/year on a 4 year deal. He will get at least a third year. He is closer to Florida (he has a home in Key West) in Mississippi than he would be in Texas. Unless he wants to work longer and get a longer term deal, does not seem to be a lot of good reasons for Leach to leave.
Miss State isn't firing him definitely he's going to see the 3rd year I was just thinking with those TCU ADs comments and Dykes being off his tree, it made me wonder if Leach would be interested in possibly a better opportunity and chance for the playoffs compared to Miss State.

I think you're right though, odds are he would stay but if I was the TCU AD I'd at least inquire and see.

Leach left a lot of money on the table at WSU and had to pay them a severance of I think $2.25M. Who knows what his deal is at Miss. State. Other schools might be reticent to hire a guy who moves around so much (leaving after 2 years), and he did not exactly kill it at WSU (albeit one season) and it has been a slow build at Miss. State (as it should be in the SEC (and B1G)).

Not well. It's just a different mindset in the SEC. LSU has kicked 2 coaches who actually won national championships to the curb. It's beyond all or nothing. You either win championships or you're toast.
That's about right and not just the SEC but a handful a schools. There was a thing in the Athletic about it the other day with regards to Mullen. He said he's coached in the SEC and previously at UF and knew what he was getting into and understood when he was introduced as HC but some of his comments lately sort of reveal that he really didn't.

Basically said schools like UF, Alabama, Auburn, UGA, Texas, OU, OSU, Clemson...and I'd add ND, USC want national championships yearly. If you're not winning one you damn well better be right up there competing for one very often. The expectation isn't realistic or fair but that's what it is and the schools and boosters pay millions for it and pay millions to those to go away who can't achieve it. I don't think it's all that sensible at times but that is the reality. I'd also say these guys are very well compensated in success and failure so suck it up and deal with that reality which you should be aware of going in.

Classic Mike Leach.

So far Franklin has done a good job of leveraging the carousel to get pay raises out of the Nitties. But who knows, maybe he's ready to make the move somewhere else after all. Which also suggests that PSU is not a destination job? What does a USC or LSU offer a coach that PSU cannot? Thoughts?

Warm winters.

According to this piece sourced from a Bruce Feldman podcast, LSU's top choice is Jimbo Fisher, and if they can't pry him away from A&M they will pivot to Mel Tucker. Mel seems a little risky; he may have caught lightning in a bottle year 2. It's a big gamble thinking he can repeat it.

Agreed.
PJ Fleck was hired at Minnesota on the strength of his fantastic 2016 at WMU.
Other than the 11-2 season in 2019, his performance has been mediocre. But mediocre enough for Minnesota to recently extend him for 7 years.

Al Golden the next head football coach at the University of Connecticut ???????????

But seriously , I expected to hear about Temple talking to him about returning to the Owls

LSU has been chasing the Saban high for almost 20 years since he left there. The perception seems to be that if he stayed at LSU, they'd have 6 NCs instead of Bama. That's why they're going through coaches like a stoner goes through a sleeve of Fig Newtons.

I agree Tucker could be good but hard to know for sure. I like to see some consistency first. But that's my lower budget AD trying to be thrifty and efficient with money thinking. It's LSU so they can take a shot and pay him a ton and if it was a fluke, fire him and try again lol.

Tucker is already making $5.5 million/year. Orgeron is making $6 million.
How much is enough to make a move? At a certain point, is it just chasing a number or a better situation? Barring an epic collapse, Tucker probably bought himself at least two years with this year's performance. Why jump into the fire of high expectations at LSU?

Not saying he will go if offered but it’s one of the best jobs in college football like really high up. Top 2 or 3 probably. Easier to win a champ from there than MSU…see Orgeron and Miles who no one would mistake for top x/o coaches. So much talent in the area.

The LSU AD got Fisher to A&M for 10 years 75 million. I’m guessing he’d do something astronomical for the top names he wants.

Never understood how Donovan got hired in the first place. He was lousy at PSU when he was there with Franklin and hadn't distinguished himself since either. I thought it was a bad hire by Lake the first time I saw it. Wonder if he's a sacrificial lamb to try and save his own skin with that player altercation thing on the sideline.

Not big news but also Walt Bell was fired at UMass

The Minutemen have not won more than four games in any season since moving up to FBS in 2012.

Another in season firing and now hiring. I believe this guy is a good recruiter for the state of Texas.

From the Athletic:
McGuire has been with the Bears for five years and held associate head coach and outside linebackers coach titles under head coach Dave Aranda. Prior to his time at Baylor, he coached Texas high school football for more than two decades.

Thought Golden would be the one, but
“Mora was announced Thursday morning as the Huskies’ coach,”
https://www.ctinsider.com/uconn/art...ormer-NFL-coach-Jim-Mora-as-next-16612240.php

Name recognition with a top college and Pro HC positions on resume makes this look like it might help the program recruit and could help the program survive
But if he doesn't win quickly and gain from name will be lost and the program will be going down the tubes again

Not surprising. Bring back CP lol. Let him fix the mistake he made making Lake his heir apparent.

Sarkisian might be available!!!!
Yea why not if CP isn’t available bring back a different former coach lol.

So now both Washington jobs are open.

Kalen DeBoer at Fresno or Kalani Sitake at BYU are a couple of names I’ve seen mentioned and think both would be solid choices.

I’ve mentioned that Donovan hire here before and have no idea what the hell he was thinking. He sucked at PSU and never redeemed himself anywhere after. Kiffin hired Briles and Lebby which makes sense with their track records…Lake hired Donovan…like WTH lol.

I’d be surprised if they went for Wilcox. He’s had trouble with offense at Cal, you want to import that after the offensive troubles you had with defensive coach Lake.

If Mullen were to get the boot wonder if they might go for Jeff Lebby Kiffin’s OC at Ole Miss and who was Heupel’s OC at UCF too. No HC experience but having offenses like those might be enticing.

Butch Davis just made himself available!!!

Well...it doesn't really sound like Butch made himself available. It sounds more like FIU made him available. Nothing like seeing your job being posted online without you first knowing about it.

He has informed the coaching staff that he will not be back, sources told ESPN, although it's unclear whether he will coach FIU's final two games against North Texas and Southern Miss. Davis' contract expires Dec. 15, and FIU last month had a job posting for its head-coaching position online with the American Football Coaches Association.
