Coaching Carousel 2021

Paywall article but basically about Dave Aranda's stock soaring. I didn't see his name much at the start of the carousel but now I've seen him for USC (he's from Cali), LSU, Washington. Not sure his personality is suited for all locations....I've said here before the guy is bland milk toast personality and cerebral. But he knows his stuff and is self aware (demonstrated by his quick firing of OC Larry Fedora for Jeff Grimes, knew he made a mistake and did a course correction).

I think the UW job might be an interesting one. Not the flash of USC (which is likely a good thing) but a very good job where a low key personality (like Petersen) can do well. I don't think Aranda is much of a recruiter but some of these places recruit themselves.

Awww, poor Quitshear. The captain who bailed on his teammates half an hour before the game now finds himself on a team that is no better off than the one he left and has to play for a new coaching regime should he plan to stay in college.
He's actually having a terrific season. Va Tech is 5-5 and could go bowling. He leads the team in rushing, TDs and is 4th in receiving. He's also handling kickoff returns.

In all that green, Aranda looks like the Great Gazoo.

Mike Farrell, just said on ESPNU Sirius, that he'd bet on Mel Tucker going to LSU.

At what point do ADs cool off on a guy who moves around so much?
when he starts losing.
Last year Mel wasn't so hot.
This season he's boiling.

Diaz was hot enough for Miami to snatch him from Temple right ater he was hired by them.
Now Manny wouldn't get a glance from the Owls as someone they would look at for the job

When your hot you're hot
When your not, you're not
and moving around will only be a reason not to hire when the one time hot candidate has turned cold because his last program sucked under him.

Well it was a step up each time although both would be quick moves but can’t blame him to totally when it’s for his career advancement. He did take some heat last time, hard to say if he’s willing again but LSU is top 3ish job in the country.

Mel Tucker is making 5.5 guaranteed in E. Lansing. There are a number of incentives that'll ladder his pay. I wouldn't be surprised if Sparty is willing to renegotiate. If you were him, would you really move to Baton Rouge, trading one pressure cooker (B1G East) for another (SEC West)? You know the expectations at LSU will be considerably higher.

Does he take the CHOP with him like PJ took the boat and oars?

I've said the same....strike while the iron is hot. One day you could be flaming hot, the next day burnt out embers.

I don't hold a grudge for anyone going, be it player or coach. Everyone can figure out and do what they think is best for themselves whether that means coming, staying or going. Whomever is here under the Rutgers banner, I root for them and leave it at that.

Expectations are high for sure but the resources and recruits and everything is there at a very high level. Their last 3 coaches won national titles and 2 of them weren't anything special as far as x's and o's...which goes to show just how good the job is.

That’s a big bet they’re making off one year.

From the article:

Alumni Mat Ishbia and Steve St. Andre will donate the private funding to the university for Tucker’s reworked contract, according to "Inside the Locker Room" podcast hosts Brian Mosallam, a former MSU Board of Trustee member, and MSU radio analyst Jason Strayhorn. University sources confirmed Ishbia and St. Andre as the donors for the new contract.

Did not realize mortgage lending was THAT lucrative.

I've read about Ishbia before with regards to donations to MSU. IIRC, I think he was a walk-on for Izzo.
His linkedin bio says he has an MBA from U Michigan. No love for the Wolverines?
Maybe prior to 2008 when mortgage lenders handed out $350K mortgages like Halloween candy to subprime customers.
His brother owns a 22% stake and he is a billionaire too.

Kiffin to Miami? Speculation from bleacher report.

Yea I’ve seen that rumored. I think Thamel or Wetzel talked with infamous Miami booster Nevin Shapiro and he said Kiffin is high on the list. Supposedly he liked his time at FAU and likes South Florida. Said it’s easier to win the ACC with the talent you can get at Miami than competing in the SEC west even though the facilities and the rest are better at Ole Miss.

I don’t know that I believe it but never know what’s in someone’s head.

Especially Kiffin's head. But you always know what is ON his head.

Dan Mullen fired. Another Sunday/Monday window and another firing. Who is left to coach the last game, Mullen already fired the DC and some other staff.

Wonder if Florida goes for Kiffin, if he supposedly loves South Florida and the talent there and Miami might be attractive (which I was a little skeptical of) then UF would be very attractive. You know he won't let recruiting go by the wayside like Mullen was accused of and he's already in the SEC.

Maybe Hugh Freeze as a wild card. He's made noise in the SEC too and with NIL now, less need for his party line lol.

Super Mario might be enticed to leave Oregon and talk the Florida job.
He's my pick for the Gators next HC.
Bill O'Brien to Miami and Bill Napier staying in-State to LSU.
Wouldn't surprise me if Matt Campbell takes the USCw job.

Could see all those as possible except Bill O’Brien……feel like USC or UW could be more logical for him.

Wonder if Florida would go for Mario, don’t particularly think he’d be a good choice except for recruiting but never know.

Besides Kiffin and Freeze, I’d even like Leach for UF. Another Spurrier and if I’m not mistaken he’s got Spurrier’s son on staff.

I'm looking at Campbell from Iowa State for the USC job , but completely forgot UW is looking as well.
But think he'll have USC make a run at him and UW would be 2nd choice.
O'Brein to IUSC would be a good move, but for some reason I feel the U might go hot and heavy at him feeling Kiffen is a good HC but a PR disaster at times .
Some with LSU and Napier would be a popular choice for the boosters (I think).

Edited my post to add Leach for UF…the next Spurrier lol. His son has been on Leach’s staff at WSU and Miss State too iirc.

Campbell is possible for USC as well also UW I think…and UW would suit his personality better imo.

I’ve said I think he’s still a good coach but maybe needs a place with less scrutiny. I don’t know if they’d go in this direction but a UW might be a good fit for him or one of these P5 jobs where a coach leaves then a Mullen could slide in.
