Committee Chair on Mad Dog Radio-best answer on why no RU

I’m trying to wrap my head around Providence. They beat no one in OOC and finished 3-5 with a Q3 home loss by 24 pts last week. Their good wins in conf were all at home and they did nothing on the road.

Okay then I hope the Big Ten is by far the best conference like the Big 12 was this year.
So you’re proving my point? If your SOS is strong, your record doesn’t matter…

Every team that isn’t a 1 or 2 seed has blemishes. We have ours. But the teams that got in over us had MUCH bigger blemishes. Many of them didn’t beat good teams…like the teams you face in the tournament. We did.

The committee used our small blemish and made it the whole enchilada. The committee sucks.
Yes, they do suck. But IMO we gave them a reason—a shitty one, mind you—to leave us out. Personally, I think they were punishing not only us but also the B1G for getting so many teams in recently and then not doing anything in the tournament.

should be a Dayton team...they won 3 games all year vs field...all high end, Marquette, uconn, creighton but beat no one else...its clear big east and acc still riding a bias

NC State getting a bye might be just as outrageous as us being left out. I can't get my head around it.

They had home wins vs Miami and Duke. I see nothing else even remotely impressive on their resume. Congrats on getting blown out by Kansas I guess? And Clemson in the ACCT which apparently doesn't count towards a resume.

(We didn't get blown out by anyone, by the way).

Arizona State has a better resume

NC State got a bye with 1 Q1 win and a non conference SOS nearly as bad as ours.

Their ncsos was 100 spots better than Rutgers, they had zero q3+4 losses.

I guess the disconnect here is some people just aren’t grasping how bad a 300+ ncsos is and Rutgers lost 3 of those games leading to the worst SOR the field would have offered.

For all the people yammering on about metrics and SOS etc. Forget that. Just open up NC State's schedule/results from this season and scroll through and tell me how that's a tournament team.
Meh, looks like a borderline tourney team to me. Not egregious.

in some ways UNC might have had a better case to get in over nc state

So.. what you're saying is you don't have to schedule better if you don't lose 4 Q3 games?

Cause that's what I'm saying too!
I do think there is some validity to the “just win the games you’re supposed to win” argument. But the reality is thise are 25 win teams anyway we’re talking programs consistently in the top 29 every year and that just isn’t Rutgers.

But the committee clearly is putting a premium on the ncsos.

Utah state 0 upper q1 wins and had 2 q4 losses but went 9-1 q2 and 13-0 q3, only played 3 q4 games all season which is remarkable for a mid major.

Nevada 4 q1 wins 2 q3 losses (again I'll remind you Rutgers had 4) and Nevada went 3-0 in q4 they also played 13 q3 games like Utah state.

Also helps your other metrics.

The committee has established itself as illogical. Stop trying to game for it. Just need to win literally everything. Take the decision away from their hands because they are just looking for reasons to justify their relevance, not pick teams logically.

I don't think it's really all that clear. Utah State's overall SOS isn't that weak, 26-8 against that is way more impressive that what we did. Nevada is closer but still way above us in SOR/WAB (i.e. win the games you are supposed to win) type metrics.

Wake me up when there's a team with such a solid overall record against an overall good schedule that gets left out b/c of a weak NC SOS I guess. It's a thing people like to say, but there's an unspoken part which is "given the record that you have, your SOS isn't strong enough".

Clemson 3-0 vs NC State and better wins

did they watch the Michigan or Purdue game in the BTT?
Reasoning is completely lame.
yes, there was a stretch where they struggled, but they got that back, without Mag in the BTT.
winning the Michigan game, and looking how they did, should have been enough. they would have beaten any other team in front of them, to confirm that, it is just unfortunate it was Purdue.
They got screwed this whole season - starting with the basket that should not have counted vs OSU..
Yes, they are better off scheduling all Q1 & 2 OOC, because even 30 point losses - see last games by Pitt, NC St, etc. don't seem to matter..

Hate to say it but we all knew at some point the piss poor OOC scheduling would come back to haunt us.
Pike is like Schiano when it comes to OOC scheduling - very risk averse.
This issue has been discussed many times - even last year by bracketologists etc.
Need to schedule a solid ooc schedule and hopefully win some of these games.
If we beat Miami, or even Seton Hall OOC strength wouldn’t have mattered - to the contrary.

Clemson #102 overall SOS (mid-major quality) with a 23-10 record, #58 SOR, #60 WAB. Not convinced non-conference SOS is the issue there.

They had 4 bad losses but so...Pitt had 3. Utah State 2 q4. Put Clemsons wins vs Utah State

Put Vandys wins vs Utah State

This. I dont get the people who get angry when we bring up ooc schedule is dog shit and needs to improve. And if it doesnt improve it really does cap your seed ceiling
I think we will see if change now that we had had a few years of success and built a winning culture… We got the wins and chnaged perceptions mostly, we are now pulling significantly better recruits… Scheduling will not kick up a notch..

I mean Clemson has a couple more Q1s than Utah State but a weaker overall SOS and 2 games worse record. I can't think of a single reason to put Clemson over Utah State honestly.

It's easier if you visualize the committee as this ...

First Question asked by Mad Dog and Steve Torre was Why Rutgers was not included…it was a very direct answer, that should be printed and pasted on the Coaching staffs office door! Scheduling matters a lot, winning big games in non conference matters most.

”Their Non-Conference schedule, and non-conference wins. The committee looked hard at that. They were trying to find something they could grab on to. But for non-conference, as it related to success, it was lacking”

he continued regarding Mag injury,

’” From Feb 7th on, in several games we had the chance to observe them, and how they looked down the stretch, they had a difficult time. The combination of the two, is why they were left out”
Would someone please email this clip to Pike and Hobbs? Thanks!

Yeah - that’s the thing. I think we should schedule better - a holiday tourney for sure. But it’s actually not the OOC itself, it’s the loss count of 14 combined with it.

The thing about our team this year is we were easily blowing out the garbage teams. Could be relied on. Replace Temple (neutral) with FDU at home and we’re 20-13. Replace SHU with St Peters and now we’d be 22-12. We need to avoid scheduling one off OOC games vs teams that have enough recruited talent to beat us on an off day - namely Q3 (especially away from home). Doesn’t help us at all.

Because they actually beat tourney teams more than 2
Who cares? This is all over complicating things. Utah State has a better SOS and a two game better record. Going deeper than that is why the selection process is super dumb. Some are more debatable but if you are ahead in both SOS and winning percentage you are just obviously ahead.

Lol no

This conference is trashand they prove it every year

Where are the big ooc wins

Oooh boise beat Texas Am what did utah state do
Maybe they'd be third.

Who cares about "every year"? This year is weird, the ACC isn't usually going to be this garbage. When they go back to normal next year I won't be pointing to this year's travesty to try to claim they suck and neither should you.

yes.. forget scheduling Temple & SHU..Schedule easy wins, and then some very tough teams, Like Gonzaga, or get in one of those Holiday Tournaments. nothing to gain from Q3 opponents
Yes committee did not watch past the regular season.
big Difference from Northwestern game & BTT games.
It is a shame, because RU would have crushed the teams they put in Dayton, & probably got to the round of 32..
