Could New Coach bring back Bruce Johnson?

One thing is for sure. You're not going to see Joe Boylan doing basketball color next year. And please stop doing game replays over & over & over during the post game show. There are also too many commercial breaks during post game.

Another of my favorite Bruceisms was his constant running tally of how many lead changes and ties there had been in a game. In a close game, he could be updating the number of lead changes and ties on virtually every possession! "That was our fifth lead change," fifteen seconds later: "that was our sixth lead change." Once you realized what he was doing it was maddening, but still somehow lovable.

Bruce Johnson is/was a professional radio journalist, both in news and sports broadcasting, unlike the pretenders out there now who think an interest in sports somehow qualifies them to broadcast. He should be applauded for his unselfish mentoring of many young people who went on to have very successful careers in news and sports - it is amazing how many people came through WCTC and went on to have very successful careers and that is a tribute to him - Gordie Deal, Peter Haskell, Neal Solondz, Jennifer Kushinka, Rich DeMarco, Mike Pavlichko and many others

I enjoyed listening to Bruce. He was a great guy too as I got to meet him several times. When I coached he spoke a few times at our fall sports banquet at my high school. I hope he is doing well. I won his trivia question contest several times. Once I didn't get my prize so I called him at WCTC. He said to me, "Art, I will be at your sports banquet next week and I will bring it with me". Well when he arrived he had a WCTC bag with a mug, pens, t-shirts and several other WCTC items. He was a wonderful guy to know.

I liked Bruce , he always gave the score, the time and you had a good idea where the ball was . That's what I want to know as a listener ; lots of radio broadcasters out there today fail in those areas .
I don't think this fan base will have another announcer like Bruce . Many of the basketball and football games in the Bruce days were not on tv . So we had to rely on Bruce to give us the description what was happening on a winter night at st . Bonaventure or even a Saturday afternoon at happy valley . Nowadays , most people who aren't at the games are watching on television .

Rich DeMarco would be by far the best choice to handle football and men's basketball play-by-play for Rutgers. He's got more than a decade of experience calling both sports at Army after coming up the ranks at WRSU and WCTC. If you've ever heard him on WABC, he's got a good set of pipes, has a smooth delivery and knows the ins-and-outs of the games.

Perhaps as important, he's a Rutgers grad and bleeds Scarlet.

You'd have to think he'd view this as a dream job and not just someone whose Rutgers gig is a way to supplement the income he gets from the 8 other things he's got his hand in.

Agreed . I am not a big demarco fan - I am a HUGE Demarco fan. He would be a great fit , but I think he has a great situation at army.

Johnson was never as great as you guys remember but at least he had a few winning seasons to work with. That more than anything colors your memories.

If RU basketball was better even Carlin would be ok and that's saying a lot.

I think RU should go after Sterling for play by play...and Suzie could do sideline reports at the half. Now that's Big Time!!! I can only imagine the catch phrases Sterling would come up with.

LOL.

"Alvydas Tenys with one dunk on the game giving him 8 for the season."
I don't remember Tenys having 8 dunks for his RU career. There were certainly worse announcers than Bruce. He was Vin Scully compared to some of the half-soused douchebag annoucers that are defacing the aural landscape

Just my opinion, but Carlin reads (and sometimes posts on these boards). He's an "all in" RU guy. You may not like his broadcasting, but that does not excuse the multiple low class posts you make about the guy. Sometimes not posting every waking thought that comes to one's head is a good path to follow.

Johnson had a nice long run with RU and to me he was a decent listen in an era when RU Basketball was not always (nor frequently) on TV. I also like Carlin. Apparently I'm not a radio broadcasting snob.

This thread just makes me think about how the Big Ten network dramatically detracts from the influence and importance of the homer announcer.
