Pikiell's compensation is scheduled to go up significantly on April 1, 2020, and he gets a retention bonus on July 1, 2020. He also already has a fairly substantial buyout ($4 million if he leaves before April 1, 2020, $3 million after). Even if Pikiell needs an extension or a renegotiated deal after this season, Rutgers should be in an excellent bargaining position (for once).

Guaranteed "additional compensation ($550,000 base salary needs to be added to each year):
March 21, 2016-March 31, 2017: $850,000.
April 1, 2017-March 31, 2018: $950,000.
April 1, 2018-March 31, 2019: $1.05 million.
April 1, 2019-March 31, 2020: $1.15 million.
April 1, 2020-March 31, 2021: $1.65 million. (pay increase of $400,000)
April 1, 2021-March 31, 2022: 2.05 million.
April 1, 2022-March 31, 2023: $2.45 million.
April 1, 2023-March 31, 2024: $2.7 million.

July 1, 2020 retention bonus: $300,000.
July 1, 2023 retention bonus: $300,000.

Buyout information: If Pikiell terminates his contract prior to March 31, 2024, Rutgers shall be entitled to receive the following:
Between January 1, 2018-March 31, 2019: $5 million.
Between April 1, 2019-March 31, 2020: $4 million.
Between April 1, 2020-March 31, 2021: $3 million.
Between April 1, 2021-March 31, 2022: $2 million.
Between April 1, 2022-March 31, 2023: $1 million.

Biggest factor in our favor is UConn is committed to Hurley and moving back to the Big East. That's the only job I would worry about him moving to in the short-term future.

Obviously if he turns us into a S16 team three years in a row or makes a Final Four or something then a blueblood might come calling but he's been a northeast guy (Connecticut down to DC) his entire life. What big northeast jobs are set to open?

Probably Syracuse pretty soon, but Boeheim is going to have a strong hand in picking the replacement. If they can't get Mike Hopkins back from Washington then it'll likely be somebody else with Syracuse ties.

Georgetown, maybe? Things are kind of going south for Patrick Ewing and maybe he gets the Chris Mullin "step aside" treatment, but I don't think Pikiell would really be a candidate there.

Villanova if Jay Wright moves to the NBA? He has his own coaching tree they'd likely pull from.

Of course anything can happen (I would never have forecasted Mike Anderson to St. John's) but I'm not sure there's going to be any job open that would pique Pike's interest along with mutual interest from the school.

This is the best conference in the country. What jobs are better. Pike is not the type of a guy to do Syracuse an aging program with immediate pressure to win

Rutgers is a better job than Georgetown and St Johns

Unless UNC or Duke or Virginia come calling where would he go

Let's just hope this is where he wants to be. If it ever came to it - im confident that brandin knight would be ready to slide over into that chair.

This is nice and all. But pike has to get us over the hump here and recruit off that .
The job isn’t finished. So far , so good . But it’s also early January and we are rutgers, after all.

Pike has New Jersey, NYC, and Philly here in his backyard to recruit from with fairly low expectations to meet. All the while playing in one of the best basketball conferences in the country. What more could he want? A few more more bucks? In a few years with a full B1G share, we'll be good for that.

Schools will be taking runs at Pike. RU will need to pay up to keep him here.

that is true and RU would step up assuredly but who are those schools that could poach away a school now successful in the best conference in the country in the NYC

i said Duke, UNC, Virginia...who else. He isnt going to Kentucky or UCLA or another BIg 10 school, he is not going to the Big East.

Collins and Chambers are the only coaches making less than Pike. Above Pike is a huge jump up to 2.2-4M a year.

If we make it to the tournament/make a run, we will have to pay up. It'll be well worth it.

I think the point is he may not need a raise this year. If another school wants to take him, they'll have to pay Rutgers $4 million in addition to whatever raise they'd be giving. For all but the most wealthy athletic departments that is unlikely.

Also, it's not "a huge jump." On April 1, Pikiell will be making $2.2 annually, plus another $300k if he's at Rutgers on July 1. That makes his salary effectively $2.5 million next year.

Making the ncaa tourney will immediately give the go to start seat licensing and donations for all RAC seats..it will be an issue for longtime fans who may be pushed aside for jonny come latelys with more cash

You have 1.65 listed above for April 1

Silly talk. He's not going anywhere if he wins. He's in the B1G and the numbers 1 and 5 media markets in the country. RU is a destination job.
