I think it's the opposite, not sure what you're watching??

I'm watching the student section react as a whole to the majority of the rock music being played. They jump, fist pump, whatever and seem to know every word.

When the EDM and other stuff comes on isolated pockets react but not the whole.

I don't know what you're watching to be honest.

Just when I start to feel like and old man I read
Ill give the in game guy some credit...he still played Crazy Train and that's always a crowd pleaser

Don't Stop Believin had a revival 10-12 years ago....but that was 10-12 years ago, its not these students classic song to listen to anymore
We aren't talking about during the game Bac, that's a different conversation.

I understand the music is for the students. But don't you want people in their 30s,40s,50s,60s at the game as well?

The music really killed the stadium experience for me. I know I'm in the minority. I cover music, but don't believe I need to enjoy all types of music (unlike most music writers I know). If the music makes me cringe, I stay away.

The during the game music is not and should not be all geared towards student, and it is not IMO…I have no problem with the music during the games.

Are you actually a student or young alumni who sits in the south endzone?
Because coming from a young alumni with student friends, your observations are false.

There is NOTHING and I mean NOTHING that Rutgers fans (at least the ones that post on this site) will not complain about.

I only know what I can see clear as day from the upper deck.

Everyone sings along to "Don't Stop Believin'"

Everyone chants along to "7 Nation Army" (and FWIW I'm not a White Stripes fan)

When the team is in the tunnel everyone is hyped during AC/DC - Team exits tunnel to some rap that no one will remember in 2 years and the section deflates.

Metallica every 3rd down on D goes without saying.

I have now been very specific. I'm afraid it's your observations that are false.

You are the greatest, all hail Scourge. I've been doing something for 40 years, that's going in to games EARLY, the music sucks and the players complain…to me, got it, they tell me the DJ spins off what they want to hear…got it

@DJYoshi whats the deal?

Like I said- they've already got you hooked. Or at least most people your age. The number of people who will stop coming to a football game because of the pre-game music set is like ten.

The Metallica third down song is irrelevant, because everybody is doing the guitar strum and chanting 'F* Penn State'. For the entire south endzone crowd, that music is about as ingrained as the band's 'First Down, Touchdown' and 'RU Rah Rah' songs.

Playing Don't Stop Believing stopped being cool around 5 years ago when I was still a student, so no it doesn't elicit universal enjoyment from the crowd.

The song played for the team's entrance has always been chosen by them, so that's irrelevant to this conversation of fan enjoyment.

Barring the points I've already made, you're using a grand total of FOUR songs (out of at least 25 played, including tracks by Calvin Harris, Avicii, Kendrick Lamar, among many others) and to try and implore which music myself and fellow students/young alumni enjoy most. You're welcome to continue sitting in the upper deck and making false observations.

You don't like country or rock, can you not enjoy Godsmack?

You don't like country or rock

Generally, I don't like country (with the exception of a few songs) and enjoy some classic/modern rock, but not heavy metal.
I enjoy EDM and hip hop/R&B much more, and am not even close to alone in the twenties age group.

Nah, you're wrong but honestly what do I care?

You keep dancing and doing you.

Depends where you grow up and who you hang out with I guess.
My daughter likes all that stuff to, but when she's alone or with friends she and her friends want to fly to Red Rocks to see Mumford and son, they like Tedeschi-Trucks, Godsmack, Haim, and down and dirty country.
The stuff you prefer is a diversion to them, just for fun, she enjoys musicians…I guess she's rare!

Actually, you're wrong.

And the funny thing is that you're arguing what you think you can see from roughly 200-1,000 feet away, a point with someone who sits in the very section you're attempting to describe and is of the exact age group that EDM/hip hop appeals more to. Have you ever heard of the difference between first-person and third-person?

Anyways, the irony here is delicious. But thanks, I'll keep doing what most of the fellow students and young alumni enjoy doing during games as well.

LOL

What you're arguing is not seeing the forest for the trees. Literally.

I'm not talking about what is their favorite. I'm talking about what they almost universally respond positively to.

I'm glad you find this entertaining. And not to worry, from my vantage point this tree sees the whole forest pretty damn clearly.
It's okay for you to be out of touch with the music that RU students and young alumni like the most. It really is.

My question is why do we need a DJ to play the music? Really, I think it's unnecessary.

RUsSkii-
Is my daughter rare, she's definitely on the Preppie side?
She wanted to see Joe Walsh with me to listen to his lead guitar...just curious

Zappaa, my point is not that the majority of teens/twenty-somethings dislike rock/country (and I'm certainly not judging/stereotyping those who do or don't), but rather that the majority like EDM/hip hop more at this point.

In fact, many of my friends enjoy and do play classic/modern rock at our gatherings, but ultimately EDM/hip hop comprises the lion's share of playlists. Not many of my friends listen to country (most who do are originally from the south), but to each their own. Even dub step has snuck in and begun to influence new music/tastes.

My original post to you was refuting the notion that EDM is somehow limited to guidos at the jersey shore, and countering those who claim that hip hop is crappy music with a popularity of only a couple of years.

I'm wondering the same thing. Is the point of music during warmups to fire up the players or to try to get fans into the stadium early? Either way it doesn't seem to be working well.

Man, you guys need to loosen your diapers. Listen to Springsteen, etc. at your local nursing homes. Whoever did the in-game music was awesome. The Wolf of Wall Street song should be our new thing FOREVER, like Jump Around is at Wisconsin. The EDM music needs to stay and keep the student section involved, because God knows the paying fans don't do their part in making noise.

Wolf thing was petty cool. I liked the players announcing 1st downs too.

MSU fans near me liked the Pregame music. We need the RU players listing to their music on headphones to get pumped up and the away team listening to oldies on the PA system.

Holy shite, you guys can't read a damn thing.
It's about the DJ spinning off good songs to early, not what he's playing.
It's about players looking up and yelling let it play, what are guys not getting?

I'm grew up on LI and the Jersey Shore and am I'm 100% Italian, so I guess on paper I'm a guido. One of my best friends said I have a "guido tinge". I attended EDC this summer, but I've also been to Ozzfest, seen Linkin Park and Incubus in concert a few times, Bon Jovi, Gaslight Anthem, 311...I think my tastes are pretty in line for where I grew up and my age.

My iPhone has a mix of all that, but I also have a party playlist, which is nearly all EDM, that I play when my friends and I are trying to get amped up, just like the players.

We can make guesses about what the players like, but I really doubt they are being ignored or overruled.

BTW, Djais has hipsters these days, just for reference, the whole guido scene has kind of changed. It is not cool to be a guido anymore in most quarters, certain parts of the style are around, like EDM, but when was the last time you saw a guy with a blowout?

Guidos aside, I'm not enamored of the whole EDM thing. But since I grew up on Rush, Zeppelin and Aerosmith, I'm not altogether surprised by this.

For its purposes, the whole DJ Yoshi scene is fine. My only complaint lies in agreeing with those who have said that the stadium sound system sucks.

It's awful. It's flat-out God-awful when you consider what we paid for it.

Jim Morrison predicted the rise of electronic music and dj's. It's interesting to hear him speak about it.

Plenty of millenials like myself like classic rock, modern rock, and EDM. I have Rush, Chili Peppers, and Aviccii on my iPhone. It is very common for this generation, especially the older millenrials.

I like the band "Silence Is Golden". You could actually carry on a conversation with the person next to you back when they were popular.
