Do not underestimate JMike’s 2nd half defense

We essentially shut him down in the 2nd half after he torched us for 23 in the first. Kudos to the true frosh! Although I do think we got away with one at the end. Looked like JMike fouled Boo on that final three, which would've been disastrous. We finally caught a break, sigh

I'm still shocked that as BB was bringing the ball up court with seven seconds to go in the half that we had Fernandez covering him.

We're getting a lot of mileage out of a very green backcourt. JMike had excellent HS tape and everything that showed up on tape, immediately translates to this level of basketball. Asking a true freshman to bottle up a 5th year senior like Boo Buie is pretty high expectations......all about recruiting folks

I saw in the 1st half that he was doing a good job on him
,.even better in the second half..
He went under screens twice in a row in the first half and Buie hit 3's. He fixed that problem later on. It also helped that Cliff or anyone else that was guarding the high ball screener hedged to stop hit from going over the top allowing the trailing defender to catch up. JMike's active hands had Buie wanting to give up the ball early on the possessions. He had trouble getting open to get the ball back after that. It was just total team D after the first 10 minutes. Buie sure got away with a lot today without getting fouls called.

Even Buie gave McConnell a lot of issues, so to see Davis step up was pretty impressive. Buie is such a vet though, knew how to get to the right spot when our defense was mixed up in who guards who

That isnt supposed to happen and it happened

Don’t overlook Simpson’s effort either.
And Noah four rebounds in first half.
I love Simpson’s effort and overall floor game, which has vastly improved. But, I don’t see a future for him if he continues to shoot 30% from the floor.

The future for Simpson is to be thinking more Caleb 2.0 than Geo 2.0

He should ideally be taking less shots next year with Dylan and Ace. His defense has been excellent. His off ball defense has made a huge leap. He is anticipating and getting steals and deflections by jumping in passing lanes or timing doubles when a players back is turned

And has been dishing the ball nicely.

Simpson still has a couple wtf moments but overall his decision making is better and he's driving and kicking or driving and keeping his dribble alive. Be a facilitator and help the team unless you are having one of your rare hot nights shooting

You also can't deny he has the balls to take a big shot

Was thinking the same thing walking back to the car tonight.

Davis I think was our MVP for tonight's game. Boo was unstoppable in the first half and he hit 3 consecutive threes when Noah was guarding him. Noah wasn't tall enough to guard him but Davis is like a pit bull in his defense. For almost the entire last 17 minutes he frustrated Boo and was right in his grill. Boo didn't make a field goal in the last 17 minutes and only made 4 foul shots. He had 23 points in less than 24 minutes and only made those 4 foul shots in the last 16-17 minutes. Jeremiah was tremendous as well as was Oskar with three consecutive threes in the first half to keep us in the game. Otherwise everyone contributed. It was a full team effort win.

agree..not only did he contribute some big shots and even foul shots....he shut down one of the best players in the country...a guy 5 years older than.. neutralized for 17 minutes of the 2nd half

an unbelievable performance for such a young player

Simpson is just a sophomore and was asked to do a lot and make up for some moronic plays here. He scored 1000 points at Lenape he’s not going to be a career 30% shooter, that will improve. He also has the Geo gene where he makes so many clutch big shots right when we need them. Don’t forget Geo disappeared on O for a few stretches in his career and some clowns here were ready to run him out of town. Same with Caleb who became 2x Big Ten and national defender of the year. Simpson’s D could have him fighting for Big D POY next year or senior year

Night and day for Buie in the 2nd half. JMike was all over him. Outstanding defender, and he’s only a freshman!
Watched the replay and the announcers said nothing of the job he did in the second half. Stuck with the D team announcing crew again.

If Simpson can figure out how to be a more efficient shooter the ceiling is still super high. What I've been saying he needed to do and what we have been starting to see is Simpson evolving as a player.

You just can't be an extremely inefficient high volume shooter. It's too damaging to the offense. As the season has progressed, Simpson is looking more and more to be a distributor. He has rebounded much better. His on and off ball defense has reach another level. These are all winning basketball traits. Limit shot attempts unless you're having one of those nights where you are hot and do everything else instead

It was for sure a foul, the replay view from the front you can clearly see JMike hit him in the head. But, like you said, Rutgers finally catches a break for once.

Simpson’s defense has really developed this season. Say what you want about his offense and shooting, but his defense has been excellent this season and seems to be getting better as the season progresses.
