Enough with the Know-nothings Who Say Mag Should Not Start

Hyatt was a 8.1% 17.7% last year (Mag this year)

So far in 2023 (limited sample) 5.9% and 12.8%

If Hyatt loses his defensive rebounding advantage to Mag it could be lights out for him getting major minutes.
I feel we need both to be contributors. Though Mag has more upside so would def like to see his play demand the lions share of minutes.

Do you still think Hyatt is a much stronger DREB as you were saying previously and this is just a small sample size?

It's one game. Was Mag's performance vs IU an anomaly or does the lightbulb stay on for the remainder of the season? Both are certainly possibilities.
I think the thing is, it has been obvious Mag is an important piece for a while - not just the Indy game. So many fans judge our players against other teams stars and starters instead of against our own players. If Mag doesn't start (or play a lot of minutes) who takes his place? Who is a better option on our team?

Ask me after the Seton Hall game!!!!

There is definitely significance in the data so far this year.

I’d like to know last year how many of Mags minutes were with Harper. He could have deferred some DREB to him. This year his competition for DREB is opponent plus Hyatt plus cliff.

Two guys I've been down on, Mag and Reiber, showed up today. Reiber didn't score (no shots) but if he doesn't acquit his position in the first half, we lose the game. Hyatt seem more in the flow. I still think the minutes are best invested in Woolfolk and was glad to see the Wolfmen in the stands.
Was wondering what the wolf masks were all about. Thanks for enlightening me.

Hyatt became the backup 4 when Ron was out last year so I think that has a lot to do with it. Different types of rebounders, but as I said I think they are both strong on the boards with no significant difference

He can be an important piece, or a liability. We've seen both.
Woolfork, Reiber, Simpson, Hyatt. Depends on matchups. Take your pick and roll with whoever is doing their job and not killing the team. I have no problem with Mag starting, and a quick hook sends a strong message.

If Mag played a lot of minutes with Ron and Hyatt didn't that could partially explain some of the differential in DREB '21-'22. I can't say definitively if that was the case.

The raw data for '21-'22 had Hyatt 62 DREB in 408 minutes AND Mag had only 28 DREB in 329 minutes.

This year
Hyatt 224 min 13-27 40
Mag 208 min 17-34 51
Mag winning both glasses in slightly less minutes
They’re both playing well. After the first game Pike called Hyatt a rebounding Guard. So is Caleb and so is Paul. Mag covers the 1 on D at times and walls up the 5 on the blocks at times.

I don’t care who starts just keep playing well as a team. The team chemistry is off the charts. I like Mag to protect Cliff and Reiber and Wolf playing together. Then we have 5-6 guards for 3 slots and in some games Hyatt can get minutes at the 4. Pike has a lot of flexibility to work with. Kudos to him putting this roster together.

Yes, but he is far from consistent. He has great games once in a while and then will disappear or have a bunch of bad games. We need him to be consistent in most of the games.
There you are . I see you have surfaced as you sure didn’t show up on these boards Saturday after the Indiana beat down. Let me remind everyone that you said Indiana was going to smoke us. How wrong can someone be and what total disregard of our history over the last 5 years against them since Corey Sanders dunked on their asses at MSG. I must have missed it. Did you post how terribly wrong you were ? I didn’t see it.
Now to Mag, who I also think you said was not a Big 10 level player , another fail. Mag goes too fast on offense and loses his balance and loses the ball because his defense intensity and mental aspect of his game which is really high has to be turned off when he is on offense and take a slower more measured approach. It hasn’t fully translated for him but there has been some signs it is coming and was on display Saturday. In the Miami game that he backed down his man late and got us a big bucket and now again in the Indiana game he had 2 great post ups over a taller Rece Thompson and it appears he is very capable of doing that again , slowly and under control for 6-8 points per game. However , his defense and rebounding has been very good and was elite on Saturday. His activity and hands and deflections at the head of the press and his doubling down on TJD was elite and textbook. So he offers a lot to this team that doesn’t show up on the stat sheet. When he goes too fast , his offensive game is not there yet and he turns the ball over, or falls down or misses easy layups but if he can slow down the really high defensive intensity and take a slower measured approach on offense , we will be pleasantly suprised with his offensive output.

Mag's issues have been lack of control (resulting in TOs) and poor shooting. I never gave up on Mag, but that's what my eyes were seeing prior the last few games. But when I look at the stats, it's a different story, you see the issues. But not to the extent I would have expected.

He's at 1.6 TOs per game. Not great, but not horrible. Roughly same as Simpson and better than Hyatt, Omori and McConnel.

He's shooting 45% on FGs. That's generally a good percentage. Fifth best on the team, and roughly tied for 4th with Simpson. Two influencing factors in that stat are: He is 18% from 3 (11/53 FGAs were 3PTs) dragging him down. And until recently, a high percent of his shots have been on rebounds and garbage cleanup so one would expect a higher percent.

Hyatt didn't play much in 2nd half vs Indiana because Pike knew he had zero turnovers in the first half. going by his turnovers per minute this season, had he played 10 mins in the 2nd half would have resulted in 7 turnovers. great job by Pike.

Hyatt and Mag (and Simpson) are going to look a lot better as our 4th, 5th and 6th options than they did as our 3rd and sometimes 2nd options on offense. It's amazing what happens when players the caliber of Paul and Caleb step back on the floor.

Hyatt and Mag were 4.3/2.8 and 2.9/1.9 a year ago respectively. They are 11.3/5.0 and 8.1/6.4 thus far this season. I have been impressed with the development of both players. Both Mag and Hyatt are significant reasons why we are playing like a Top 30 team while only having Paul for 3 1/3 games and Caleb for 2 1/2 games.

Cap tip to both. Keep it up.

I absolutely was here Saturday. I guess you only read certain posts. Until Mag plays CONSISTENTLY at a Big 10 level I’ll stick by my analysis. He has has an occasional great game before.

You cannot compare his TO numbers to Caleb’s who has been asked to play a ton of point. It’s apples and oranges. Caleb played much more in control vs. Indiana. His 3rd turnover doesn’t count (5 second call on our last possession winding down the clock up 15). Having Paul back made a huge difference but Caleb still brought the ball up a good amount and overall played a controlled game. Looked more comfortable to me.

What did you say about Indiana after Saturday ‘s game ?

Mag is more effective than some seem to give him credit for in the post. He's so long and athletic he really can't be stopped if he gets good position. His shot has a super high release as it is so he can turn around and get the shot off with ease
He should spend some time with Kareem and learn the skyhook.

Hyatt the last 2 games had great 1st halves and then disappeared in the 2nd half. We need more consistency from him as well.
I disagree with these last 2 posts 100%. The team played a great game. They play great D and do a great job getting the ball to the hot hand. First half was Hyatt. Second half was Baby Geo. Who cares. If everyone scores 10 every half we would win 170-50. This isn’t the Globetrotters vs the Generals.

Yeah I’m sure that’s what Pike was thinking. I’m sure he wasn’t going with the hot hand.
