It's been downright depressing around here...so for fun I was thinking about starting a list of favorite plays at the RAC by a Rutgers player

Here are a few that stand out in the near 40 years of going to hoops at the RAC

In no particular order

-Sam sanders take off from the foul line dunk against the cuse upset in February 1998. This happened right in front of me. I could not beleive this one until I saw it on recording. Jordan did it in a dunk contest. Sam in the saddle shoes did it in a GAME

-jimmy inglis...supposed to pass...nails the three off the inbounds for three at the Buzzer to tie and take #2 Villanova to over time in January, 2006. One of the loudest eruptions in RAC history

-tom savage tomahawk slam in the atlantic ten final against penn state in march 1989

-three technical fouls called consecutively against princeton in the December 1978 game against pete Carrill and them two other assistants mid way in the second half. We only made 2 of 6 foul shots. But still won

-the 6 pt in 10 second run in the 2nd half of the December 1992 upset over national ranked UNLV caused by three press turnovers in a row with the 2-2-1 press. THE loudest eruption in RAC history!!!

-Jmitch on the four point play in the Villanova upset in mike rices first year. We actually got a call in a big east game!

-rick dadika from 27 on the pull up in the a-10 championship in march 1989

-a reverse dunk alley oop by James Bailey from Rodney Duncan over Rosevelt Bowie in the second half win over January 1979 over #10 Syracuse. Maybe the best dunk of almost 160 that year by JB. He only had 6 points that day

-a head shaking no way block shot by d-train Daryl smith against all American Doug smith in opening night upset over national ranked Missouri in November 1990.

Plenty more....let's add to the list!

In that same Atlantic 10 Championship game against Penn State in 89 Dadika flips up a reverse layup high in the air that hits the shot clock and drops in! Clark Kellogg announcing the game announces in disbelief with a heightened voice " that hit the shot clock"!! i'll never forget it.

Great memories Shack!! Although I was at both games and that upset of Unlv was loud , the A-10 championship game against Penn State was the loudest the Rac ever was. 45 minutes before the 930pm ESPN tipoff, the Rutgers and Penn State students were in the arena early and yelling Penn State sucks, Rutgers sucks for 25 minutes straight . When Ricky Dadika hit those 2 threes from New Brunswick or Steff Curry's range, I thought my eardrums were going to pop. I happened to sit in 214 at the time and Joe Paterno was sitting in the media area and was relentlessly serenaded with Joe Pa sucks throughout the night and during timeouts. An incredible night !!
Those back to back season opening wins over Unlv and Missouri when they were both Number 1 were earth shattering .

The 1977 win over Syracuse on NBC with Marv Albert was another ear rattling experience.

I say it often that the Rac was the most intimidating place to play in the country and to see what it is now is just a shame!

The Andrew Kolbasovski dunk off the opening tip against Marcus Camby-less #1 UMass in 1995. Set the tone for an amazing first half were we actually had the lead at halftime. Then we got reminded why we are Rutgers.

...anything in the Troy Murphy game.

On a negative note...game ending play in OT with GW beating us on a Yinka Dare basket.

Don't forget Herve's shot from almost our bench to beat Providence, Quincy's foul shot to beat SHU and Jerome Coleman's shot at the buzzer to beat Auburn on an out of bounds pass near our bench to the left side of the foul line (cross court) all with only about 2 seconds left. We use to get quite a few highlights at the RAC. It would be nice to finally turn things around. I hope I can live long enough to see some good times by RU again.

e

Geoff Billet's last second shot in the Big East Tournament to beat Georgetown. Great radio form Bruce Johnson announcing that one!!!!!!

EDIT: Forgot this wasn't in the RAC. Still an exciting play though.

I know this wasn't a play, but going back to that Syracuse game in '78, I remember that they brought their little pep band. They were placed up in the top couple of rows. Every time they played their little tune to try and pep up the fruit, the RU crowd took over and chanted in unison, "Syracuse Sucks."

Absolutely. Got pretty hoarse that game. We were sitting right behind the basket as the stands did not have that barrier and 5 of my friends were wrapped in red paper machete and were yelling that all game. Got a lot of air time coming out of timeouts !

That game (along with Louisville 2006) are my two favorite RU memories

The whole first half against Syracuse when we outscored them by 18. Douby and shields were going off. Of course we blew it.

Shields 3 to force OT against PITT in 2005.

The first half against #1 UCONN in 2004. If anyone has any of these games on DVD please let me know.

Jeff Greer hitting a corner 3 to take SHU game into OT in 2000. The RAC went wild.

Sherrod being taken out by Toney El from behind and the ensuing rumble.

Ugh, who knew that those were the glory days. When most conference home games were intense.

My favorite almost play goes to Tom Everson. Our 7 foot center was slow. I watched him play for three years, and never saw him dunk. Would not have taken much. We were playing St. Joe's (not sure) at the RAC. He was slow getting back on "D". Joes turns it over. Long pass to Tom in the paint. The whole place is ready to explode when he packs it home. Joe's guard hauled a$$ down court and swatted it away as Tom was bringing the ball up to dunk. Wish he had gotten his dunk.

For me, the 2 most memorable were Inglis and Mitchell. I've only been a fan since 96 though, so they weren't quite as impactful on a large scale as the others, but they were both amazing to be there for.

The game against PSU. No contest, that was the loudest I've ever heard the RAC. Was up in the 300 section squeezed in like a sardine can loving every minute. There was no "student section", they were everywhere. Back then, no one looked forward to playing us at home.
What I wouldn't give to have half of that RAC energy today.
