GAME 16 Illinois: Illini made the plays

Watched on my phone in the casino down here in FL, while playing poker. Screen was a little small, but it beats gametracker, lol. Good summary. Felt the same way - very good effort, defensive slugfest with a similar team in talent and disposition and they made a couple more plays than we did and the rebounding killed us. 17 for Cockburn! Game was there to be won, but with evenly matched teams the home team will probably win 75% of those down the stretch.

By no means a "bad" loss at all and we'll have more of these games, as our defense will likely keep us in most to all of our games this year. Agree this is the first game we missed Geo's steadying hand. Loved seeing JY continue to play well, including numerous kick outs off drives for easy treys that were mostly missed. No major issues with the refs - and Myles has to stop moving on those picks. Now we need to beat Indiana and MN at home to keep up the momentum. Both are definitely winnable and we'll probably be favored at home, especially over MN (IU probably a toss-up).
More importantly how did you do at the poker table!!

Foul disparity probably one factor, but the Myles fouls are squarely on him.

And bac is right that the game was lost in the possessions in the last 2 minutes. We didn’t execute on offense, and they did. Period. End of story.

The refs didn’t make everyone on our team (except JY) forget how to put the ball in the basket.

Great summary as usual by the OP. FWIW it's pretty pointless to complain about the home cooking of the officiating in college basketball. It's a fact of life and we get the occasional benefit of it too at the RAC.

While I am naturally disappointed that we didn't execute better in the last two minutes I saw enough good things with regard to how we competed and played on the defensive end to confirm that we will be in most games this year regardless of who we are playing. On most possessions, we play good help man to man defense. That is important because it is clear on certain possessions when it breaks down, that several of our guys can be beat off the dribble against a quick team like Illinois.

Offensively, I thought we settled too often for a 3 point shot rather than probe the defensive particularly when Cockburn was out. Only two guys got to the foul line. To me that is partially the result of settling. I know the analytics value the three a lot more but I think we are most effective when we establish ourselves inside the arc and then kick out for open threes. Even with Geo, we just don't have enough guys who consistently knock down shots. Since we have decent depth as long as a couple of guys are cooking on a particular night we should be OK.

This is an unforgiving league. Need to review the tape, try to address areas that can be improved and get ready for another battle against Indiana. This loss won't hurt us much, a loss to a good Indiana team at home, unfortunately will.

The amount of times we have had the benefit of homecoming both in the Big East and B1G.

Who can forget the travesty at MSG?
We unfortunately have always been the new guys and really don’t get the benefit of home cooking.

PSU last week was a rarity.

Really want Pike to get a T. The bail out call right in front of RU bench.
Ticky tacky foul on Miles.

We settled for way too many threes imo. But Illinois deserves some credit. They play very solid d and they have an eraser/space eater.

This game was decided by Myles inability to stay out of foul trouble as predicted. We still almost won but if Myles was out there we would have won this game. We struggled to rebound without him

why you own this board?? you are way to sensitive -- what, do you actually think you are always right--what a laugh

Actually love that the board has become active..the more the merrier but you clearly are here to attack posters. You did it in the other thread unprovoked just so everyone knows what you are about

Jump shooters rarely get fouled.

There was a foul disparity because we were far too happy settling for jump shots and threes instead of challenging Cockburn. Even when he was out of the game we'd settle outside. It felt like the only person willing to take it into the lane was Young, and occasionally Harper. All of the pretty passes into the post we'd started getting used to were gone. Mulcahy dribbled and dribbled and dribbled trying to get the defense to bite on something to open up a passing opportunity to a post player, but it never happened - and he kept getting into trouble looking for a pass that wasn't there. Illinois' defense was very good at denying entry passes, and only Young was willing (able?) to drive in.

What is the positive to take is our defense even without Myles shut down Georgi and Cockburn from any rhythm offensively and even without Myles most of the game and Geo all of the game we were 2 minutes away from winning. We lost but put ourselves in position to win without two of our leaders. Its not a win but still i think a sign today the program is still taking steps forward. Its okay if we arent ready to win at Illinois

lmfao..no stop it with the refs, our fanbase needs to grow up or its going to be embarrassingly around here every loss.
I agree. I’ll admit I had a couple of ant-ref reactions today, but when I saw the replay they made the right call. They also checked replays to confirm calls. In the end, they let two physical teams play for the most part. Can’t pin anything on the refs.

Bingo.

Can't assume any outcome on future games. We COULD win by double digits later on but we could also lose.

One thing was a positive, to have a chance to win despite mostly dreadful shooting, getting out rebounded and no Geo shows how far we've come.

Just gotta keep up the high effort and the wins will follow on most nights.

Glad to see Young stepping it up in Geo's absence. Tough loss. We need to hold serve at home.

Bottom line - we miss Geo the most during crunch time. He’s the only RU player who can consistently create his own shot and take the big shot when the game is on the line. When he comes back this team could get to the next level, as almost everyone else has stepped it up in his absence, so that the new sum of all parts should be greater when he returns.

This is going to be a key for us in nearly every game. What I doubt anyone predicted was that he would pick up of three of his four outside the paint nowhere near Cockburn. I was really hoping he would give a good account of himself in this high profile matchup. He ought to be motivated as much as anyone for the rematch.

I am not in the moment to micromanage 2 to 3 possessions when most league games will be 2 to 3 possessions per half.

I will say that the one item of note for the league and RU, in order to truly get the most out of your roster, you have to play bodies and find minutes off your bench.

The coaches that try to squeeze down their bench or shorten their rotations, will pay the price in a couple of weeks.

I feel better about the program today than I did after we defeated Wisconsin and Seton Hall.

I do think bac is a big proponent of trying to ignore a referee impacting a game BUT I did feel like that screen can be called a foul every time, if you want to make that call. A missed runner by Young other than an offensive foul, would be something most fans could live with. With limited possessions under 2 minutes, in a low scoring game, to chalk it up as Illinois making the plays to win, would not be accurate.

I still believe that RU has 5 to 6 good shooting games in them from 3, the rest of this B1G. And that will cure a lot of issues that overcomes foul trouble or getting beat on the glass once in awhile.

Last point.....Jacob Young.....I watch him play and competes at a high level. The difference between MSU not winning by 20+ vs 11 or 12, is Young.

The question of "laying an egg", was there minus Geo, if there's no Young on the roster. Today's game easily could have ballooned to 8 or 10....but he defended and made plays.

It bears watching how he plays when Geo gets back. We need his energy and he can lighten Bakers workload on the ball.

This roster still has tons of upside, today was another step forward staying in a road game when lots of players didn't play well or shoot well.

I thought Myles was officiated different than the whistle most of the game. Thought all the calls were soft and that as a ref you had to be anticipating making a call to blow the whistle during his interactions. A fault that many refs have.

Basketball is a 40 minute game in which teams have many opportunities to control the game via defense, rebounding and shooting.Rutgers played very good defense holding Illinois to 54 points even with allowing far too many offensive rebounds. The game was really lost from beginning to end because the half court offense was so inept only scoring 51 points. There were open shots but the team shot bricks far too often.Young was the only player that showed a pulse on offense and I give him a shout out for his recent improvement on offense and defense. If the rest of the team only made two additional shots,Rutgers would have won the game.

The loss of Baker was clearly felt because without him its really difficult to go on a sustained spurt.I kept looking for Harper to take over the game just like number 12 did for Illinois but it didn't happen.Without a go to scorer in crunch time chaos usually results and that is what happened in the last two minutes. This was a winnable game on the road which Rutgers let get away.Lets not kid ourselves that the next two games at the RAC aren't super important. The B1G has lots of parity which means teams can move up or down many positions depending on game results.Road wins will be the separation factor.

also saw a replay of the Dosunmu shot that was goaltended by Harper....well he blew by Caleb..damn that was really bad defense by Caleb, he literally just watched him go by..it was 48-46 with a minute left...wtf..a total breakdown there and Harper couldnt get there in time for the block

Our d was not good down the stretch

the previous play was pretty bad too, they allowed Dosunmu to just drive in and get fouled by Harper...you knew they would do that.

Dosunmu and Felize took over and we had no answer

Excellent recap again Bac.

I think guys are being a little too critical of the loss. We played excellent defense for 90% of the game. Let's see what happens in the next 2 home games against Indiana and Minnesota.

We MUST play excellent defense every game to have a chance to win because of our suspect shooting from the perimeter.

Best of Luck,
Groz

Today, We seemed to give up on 3 pts rebounds. As soon as a 3 goes up everyone retreats. Is it by design?

Some people are just here to blow off steam and exhibit it repeatedly over the course of more than a decade

That wasn’t the only possession in the last 5-6 minutes that Caleb was broken down on the perimeter ...couple of others as well

Really thought the end game needed to be young, Mathis, Harper yeboah ans Johnson

FT shooting is why we lost. They made theirs. We missed ours.

In a 3 point game..that’s the difference

I think the reason people are upset about that last foul call on Myles is because there were a bunch of things not called on Illinois. The one that sticks out to me, is when their guard Feliz, drove around the top of the key for an easy layup, Johnson was being cleared out of the lane. Not sure which Illinois player it was, but he was clearly backing Johnson out. That should definitely have been called as it led to an easy basket in a key moment.

I really like watching RU play Illinois. They both have the same potential and are growing in this league together. Going to be fun watching them rise to the top and play in big games.

Cockburn making 5 of 6 free throws hurt. I guy like him I would expect 3 of 6. Do think we got the short end of the whistles, not grossly, but Johnson seemingly not being able to play physical like everyone else and the phantom bailout with 1 second on the shot clock was unbelievable. McConnelt 2 for 8 and Yeboah 3 for 10, if the each make one more basket it is still not a good game for them but we win. Only one player, Young, having a good game is not going to cut it. Pike kept Johnson out way too much, effectively fouling him out. WTF run a pick play with him at endgame when he has such a problem with it this year and this game, and he was heating up underneath? Mulcahy needs to shoot more as they are playing the pass to defend him.

. . . Second Johnson... wow. Four fouls, but three committed OUTSIDE the three point arc and only one committed while defending Cockburn. Two on moving screens, and one on possibly the most boneheaded reach in attempt I've ever seen. After sitting most of the first half, he immediately decides to take a cheap swipe on a guard 30 feet from the basket? I was screaming at my TV "WTF are you DOING!?!" . . . .

What he was doing was steaming. Cockburn had just outmuscled MJ, almost bullied him, a few seconds earlier when MJ tried and failed to budge Cockburn by lowering his shoulder on a low post move. He bounced off Cockburn like he hit a wall.

Even the 4 points MJ scored were against the backup while Cockburn was out of the game (presumably explaining to people how to pronounce his name). Once Cockburn returned for the last 3-4 minutes, MJ was shut down again.

No more Lilliputians for MJ like he got with the out-of-conference schedule and even small Nebraska. He handled it well against PSU so I’m sure he’ll adjust. But there will be very few games going forward in which MJ can regularly reach over or around the other team’s post players.

The big fella is a 70% ft shooter I believe they said

We’ve gotten boned big time by the refs a few times the past years and BAC does usually downplay it but yesterday was not a game decided by the refs.

There were a couple questionable calls (Caleb ticky tack and 1 and Myles moving screen) but this game was there for the taking and we came up short.

Just because Illinois only had 4 fouls in the 2nd half with a couple minutes to go doesn’t automatically mean we got boned by the refs.
