GAME 19 Iowa: For Real

Garza to me deserves to make first team All American but he celebrated way too much after every basket he made. He was flexing his muscles a few times after making baskets. He was too over the top for me. I like players who just play the game and on't showboat after every play.

Agreed. I'm not sure which team started the chirping quite honestly, but all his taunting after every bucket made was incredibly douchey.

i texted my friends last night when we came back to take a lead at 77-76 (before the refs decided again that a step-thru travel is not a travel and to dictate the game) that this is the best feeling i have ever had about an RU team in my life. Im only 38, and have been following RU since 98, so forgive me older guys on this board, but waters, bannon, rice, fhj, those teams NEVER EVER EVER made me feel confident going into any game, that they have a legit chance to win it no matter where or against who. i know we are engrained to think the worse, based on history, but i left that game feeling better about the rest of the season and this program that I have ever felt.

Quick hits

An off night from JY didn't help here.

Agreed. JY struggled against the Iowa zone which neutralized his speed. I'm surprised more teams don't zone RU because we don't shoot it well from outside (except for last night). RU may see more zone from Nebraska.

Northwestern will play zone against Rutgers.

Want to start by saying how proud I was of the effort and grittiness of our boys last night and what a tough loss it is for them and us. Harper and Yeboah were fantastic and Myles was decent but did not play enough, but a game where we do not get the normal, Jacob, Caleb , Geo or Montez production and we still have the lead with 2 minutes to go , says a lot about our team . We are learning how to win when our guys do not have their best game, and have done it at home, and we are so so close on the road. We are a damn good team.
Have to give Iowa some props. Besides Garza who was a beast,,but we held him scoreless for the last 10 minutes , Weiscamp and Kriener hit some big shots. Touissant , their freshman point guard outplayed all of our guards and that was the difference in the game along with their rebounding especially on the offensive glass.
In any game there are 3-4 plays that you point to that decide a game and the number all happened at the end. 1) Ron relaxing for a second and being startled and not corralling the rebound up a point with 2 minutes left after they missed 2 free throws; 2) Jacob somehow missing the layup with 18 seconds left for the tie , even after he had passed Garza’s attempt to block the shot: 3) Caleb missing the front end of the one and one during the start of our comeback with 4 minutes left, very uncharacteristic ; 4) Harper’s charge into Garza , where Myles was waiting for the lob jam, if he would have just come to a stop . Those were 4 key plays on our side. Iowa hitting some key threes and getting some offensive rebounds were key for them but the 4 plays by us, if converted would have gotten us the win despite everything Iowa did right.

There are so many positives to take away from last night and one huge negative the loss.

1) Ron was an absolute beast and unstoppable . Iowa couldn’t guard him or any of our players all night but Ron is capable of this most nights but we do not need him to. He sensed how unstoppable Garza was and knew he had to match him and he did. So so happy we have him for the rest of this year and 2 more.
2)Akwasi had his best game in quite a while and was on In the first half. He did have a couple of defensive lapses that Weiscamp burned us with but overall a really solid game .
3)Myles played well and I thought Coach took him out of the game too early . He was trying everything against Garza but everything he was doing or throwing up was going in . Despite Garza’s All American performance , he didn’t score for the last 10 minutes and that was because of Myles. I didn’t think we got the ball down low enough, because Garza couldn’t stop him either and we could have gotten him in foul trouble sooner, but we did not do it enough.
4))Very slight criticism of Coach, with his early subbing. I know he loves his bench and they have played well and were normally instant offense , but he sat Myles, Akwasi, Montez, and Caleb at the 16 minute mark. With the way Akwasi and Myles and Ron started , I would have gone with them until the 12-13 minute mark. He brought in 4 players, Geo, Jacob, Paul and Shaquille who were not very effective and broke some of our offensive momentum and Carter was no match for Garza.
5) Foul trouble hurt Caleb tonight as he couldn’t play the type of defense nor did he rebound like he normally does , which hurt us. He wasn’t aggressive as a result. He also missed the second of the 2 technical foul shots and the crucial front end of the one and one with 4 minutes left during the late comeback. Very uncharacteristic of Caleb.
6) Geo is not himself and I believe he is still hurt and not playing with confidence yet. His forced step backs were not necessary .
7) Jacob got outplayed by Touissant and that was crucial tonight. He didn’t look comfortable, forced a few things, fell down at the key and got caught in the air another time . His defense also wasn’t good against Touissant which allowed Iowa to over penetrate . He has to make that layup and I am sure he feels worse than anyone. Liked that Geo went up to him immediately and told him and literally pulled his head up. Fine leadership by Geo.
8) Suprised Montez did not see more time. He was taken out too early to start the game and really wasn’t given the defensive assignment on Touissant . He was on the bench the last 10 minutes which should never happen. Montez, would make a big drive, get an offensive rebound, or something . Coach played Jacob, Paul and Geo too much hoping one of them would give Harper help but it did not pan out tonight.
9) Shaquille insertion too early , hurt us defensively and he didn’t rebound well all night . Nobody was stopping Garza, but Shaq’s Not rebounding some of the misses tonight was disappointing .
10) We obviously played our C game on defense but Iowa also made some tough shots. Uncharacteristicly, left Weiscamp and Kreiner open from 3 and we got burned. Iowa out hustled us especially on the offensive glass because of our foul trouble we did not get the guard rebounding of Caleb, Montez or Paul that we needed and have come to expect . Despite subpar defense for most of the night, we held them without a field goal for 8 minutes, shut down Garza, and pressed our way very effectively back into the game and took the lead with 2 minutes to go from the 5 minute mark. That was impressive.
11) Iowa’s defense was better than it has been but they couldn’t guard us all night . We scored 80 and if Geo, Jacob, Caleb, or Tez, have any decent shooting nights we score 95-100. We beat the crap out of teams with lock down defense normally, but we also showed that we can score on offense very effectively playing up tempo. We played Iowa’s style or to Iowa ‘s pace and still almost won because of some lapses on defense and because of Garza . That is proof of what a real good team we have. Loss sucked but lots of positives and things we can learn from. We break through our true next road game.

Can speak enough about your third point (#3). Myles was a man on a mission to deny any entry pass to Garza by game's end.

great recap, hit on all the points...I agree especially about pulling Myles early and trusting Shaq could contain him that early in the game. One disagreement is Mathis...He was 2-10 and in a game like this where he was forcing shots and not playing in control, I think it was best for him to be on the bench.

Young was just a little too hard with that layup to tie things, there would have still be 19 seconds so we still would have had to make a defensive stop or win in overtime. You are right our guards played poorly, I am disappointed in that yet we were right there at the end despite that

Bac, every time someone and not you but others, try to crap on Montez, he does things that do not show up in the box score that are called winning plays. I have no doubt he would have done a better job of containing Touissant than Jacob did last night and also would have grabbed more rebounds both defensively and offensively( like Akwasi’s short 3 that Geo did not go after). Tez grabs that rebound and drives straight to the hole for a bucket and a foul. Plus his passing is underrated. In the Minnesota game, he made a great pass to Yeboah on the break and a great pass to Ron underneath for a reverse layup. He does multiple things and all some posters see is he missed a shot or missed a foul shot when he has hit key ones for us, including the key 3 to give us the lead late at Illinois. Play Tez.

Montez is a very good player when he is control. Pike however has not been shy about sitting him long periods of time. To me Montez is puzzling because we need to find that consistency with him. Its probably the last nut that Pike has to crack in the lineup

I don't think anyone on the roster has shown a modicum of scoring consistency. That's what makes this team so maddening but also difficult to defend.

because we lost I think people are losing sight of what a game Harper had last night. That was some tremendous domination...he outscored Garza.

Good post BAC. Yes, we are for real. And yes, so is Iowa. That team can score from the inside and outside, which includes their two big men, who knocked down at least 4 threes.

We hung in there and played them tough, but unfortunately, we played them on their terms. If we were able to get better defensive stops in the second half, I think we win that game by five.

As for the officials: BAC is never one to criticize them. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. Last night, even Steve Bardo the color commentator commented that "Iowa is hammering Rutgers under the boards and is not getting called for even one foul..." I counted at least five separate occasions where that occurred in the first half and then at least four in the second. Would it have mattered? Maybe, maybe not.

But what did bother me, was not so much some of the bad calls against us, but when they occured. There was one particular in the second half, where Wieskamp was driving the ball and didn't get touched, and the official (the small African American ref) out of position, called a foul on I believe Calab. We were up by one or down by two, I don't remember. But there was no foul there, it was called, and Wieskamp knocked down 2 FT's. BTW, Wieskamp missed maybe one FT last night. That moment hurt our momentum and helped theirs. So, it's not always that the officials contribute to winning or losing because they only shot four more FT's than we did, but it's when they're called, and last night that call in particular really hurt us big time.

Agree with goru and bac that Pike brought Shaq into the game too early. Myles had shut down Garza for the first four minutes with excellent ball denial and fronting, but as soon as Shaq came in the game after the under 16 timeout, Garza went on a roll with 3 buckets. He was just abusing Shaq, and thereafter even Myles couldn't slow his roll.

And of course, that last 10 minutes of the 2nd half was a master class by Myles of ball denial and fronting of a skilled post player. Granted, Iowa seemed less intent on feeding him in the post, but a lot of that was because of Myles' defense.

Our defensive intensity was off from the start and he made a statement subbing 4 and leaving Mathis in at that point. No doubt Shaq needs to be better and in hindsight Pike should have left Myles in.......let's keep in mind for both short term and long term Myles needs to be limited to 25 MPG. Against teams with good bigs that will be very difficult to stick with.

Great points goru.

I hated the Myles early sub. Garza did nothing and he wasn't in foul trouble. The second he gets subbed out Garza immediately gets going and dominates the rest of the game. Bad sub

I agree that it appeared like a bad sub but if Carter doesn’t travel on those two shots then he negates two of Garza’s scores and RU practically holds serve while Myles is resting. Pike could not have foreseen that and probably felt it would be a tight game all the way through so let’s get Myles some rest while we can.

I get that was his thought process but I still didn't like it at the time either. Myles gets in early foul trouble and Pike has to take him out. Now he doesn't get in early foul trouble and is shutting down Garza and he still gets yanked. It's trying to be too cute.

if they had Bohanon.. we lose by 10+ with the way we played
Bohannon would have been harassed all day by Montez, Jacob and Geo. Touissant was fast and had some twitch and he outplayed Jacob most of the night. They got 14 points out of him that Iowa certainly did not expect. It would have been the same last second scenario.

Add Toussaint to the long list of guys who unexpectedly have a career day against us, in an otherwise close and winnable game.
