Rutgers Game NotesPISCATAWAY, N.J. – After three consecutive games away from the RAC, Rutgers (11-3) welcomes Penn State (8-6) on Sunday for a 2:30 p.m. tip-off in its Big Ten Conference home opener. On the heels of consecutive road losses against teams projected to compete in the NCAA Tournament, the Scarlet Knights will be working to improve to 9-0 at home. The first 500 fans will receive complimentary 2017 RU basketball calendars and the Red Panda acrobat, who stacks bowls upon her head while riding a seven-foot unicycle, will perform at halftime.
Rutgers is eighth nationally in rebounds-per-game (43.29), 10th in rebound margin (+10.0) and 16th in field goal percentage defense (37.6). Penn State ranks 12th nationally in free throw percentage (77.9) and 17th in blocks (5.9).
Sunday afternoon’s game will be televised live on ESPNU, with Jay Alter calling the action and Dalen Cuff providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York & WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary.
The game will mark the 70th meeting on the collegiate hardwood between RU and PSU dating back to 1922, with the Nittany Lions holding a 39-30 advantage in victories. Rutgers is 21-14 at home versus Penn State, including 9-6 mark at the RAC. RU and PSU were both members of the Atlantic 10 from 1976-79 and from 1982-1991. In the last match-up, Jonathan Laurent posted 19 points and 15 rebounds, but the Scarlet Knights dropped a 70-58 home decision to the Nittany Lions on Feb. 20, 2016. Rutgers overcame a 15-point first half deficit to take a second-half lead, but could not sustain momentum.
After trailing by as much as 21 points in the second half, Rutgers fought back to within nine with possession, but would get no closer in a 72-52 loss to No. 14/14 Wisconsin in front of 17,287 fans at the Kohl Center on Tuesday night. Mike Williams shot 6-of-10, including 4-of-5 behind the arc, to pace the Scarlet Knights with 18 points, while Nigel Johnson contributed 11 in the second half. The Badgers benefitted from 21 points (21-of-28) at the free throw line, 14 more than RU (7-of-11) accumulated.
Penn State, under the leadership of sixth-year head coach Patrick Chambers, suffered an 87-77 home loss to Northwestern on Tuesday. The Wildcats made 11 three-pointers (11-of-26) and led by as many as 24 in the second half before a late PSU surge. Five players are averaging double figures in scoring for Penn State, led by junior captain Shep Garner (14.1) and freshman Lamar Stevens (12.4). Mike Watkins leads the Big Ten and is fifth nationally in blocks-per-game (3.3). The Nittany Lions arrive in Piscataway with their strength of schedule ranked 23rd nationally.
