Gavin Wimsatt Commits to Kentucky!!

The pertinent question is "compared to what"? P5 football and the NFL? There are exceptions, but no, not that level. And they don't have the height for the NBA and again D1. Any other group, you'd be surprised.
NASCAR drivers are better athletes than LAX players. Heck, the ball boys in tennis are better athletes.

Clown. Have you figured out of your 100 conspiracy theories who brought down the Key Bridge yet? The Russians or the aliens??

Westcoast:

"Shorter passes = higher completion rate - that's a known fundamental ."

Except Eimsatt struggled mightily throwing those passes. And many of his story completions were horrible throws that eliminated and yac and often resulted in negative yardage plays. "

Yes he obvs missed on some short passes but he would have been better at the longer ones that GS said weren't possible with RU's OL. QBs aren't from cookie cutters .

He could have also been more of a runner on some plays (being a Dual Threat QB and all).

Look at Mike Teel on everybody's fav RU team loaded with NFL talent (and best OL in D1).
In 2006 Teel only had 55.6% completions with 12 TD passes and 13 INTs - he had zero rushing TDs.
In 2023 GW had 8 more total TDs than Teel and 4 less INTs
Put GW on 2006 RU and Teel on 2023 RU and people might be surprised.

QBs are typically constrained by the players around them. Better players = better QBs. Put GW on the 2006 team and he might’ve been amazing. Especially if he worked out the short throw reliability.

Some people think GW is worse than he actually is. If he can't pass, can only hand the ball off, can't complete a 5 yard pass than there is no way our running game would have worked. Defenses always respected GW to hit some passes, and he would.

That's not what the hookers say. You'd have to ask the sheep about the NASCAR drivers and ball boys.

lol. Thank god he isn't a teacher. A kid would ask a question and his response would be "Are you an idiot!? Why would you ask such a question? Go home and tell your parents they raised a dope". lol.

True.

I have to give a much higher than usual cut of the client fee to my hookers to convince them to take tricks with LAX players. For one thing, they all agree that LAX players all have raging beta kinks and want dominatrixes. But the worst thing is that, apparently, the LAX players want the girls to, uh, use the LAX stick on them and apparently they don’t like to shower down there - so the sticks get really disgusting.

Anyway, the girls complain so much I stopped accepting business from LAX players. Just not worth the hassle and they are the worst tippers.

"Kentucky wants to get back to running the football."

I cannot think of a better quarterback to have on your team if you want to run the ball more. You won't have much of a choice...
Why would any respectable defense not stack the deck when he comes in? If he surprises and passes, it’s likely to he overthrown.

His whole issue for us was the short game though. It’s not just a “little bit worse” than everyone else in FBS on the shorts. You could literally count on one hand the number of well thrown / placed passes he made in the flats on laterals and short routes his entire career. When it comes to the short game, your making it sound like a small thing where “if he just works on the shorts” the sky is the limit. After 3+ years at RU he showed in the spring game he still cannot make those throws.

Ashokan intended his side by side analysis to show that Gavin hadn’t thrown for that made less yards than AK and others despite a lower completion ratio, but what it in turn also highlights is just how incompetent of a short passer he was. Maybe it’s even the case that he was decent overall on longer pre-snap design throw execution relative to the competition. But even if that’s true, being unable to make a servicable short throw in the flats is not just a small shortcoming. It’s massive.

With the proper coaching, he’ll be able to make those short throws. Looks like he will get it at Kentucky.

So suddenly your position is our coaches didn’t coach him right? You predicted he’d have a huge year for us. Are you saying either UK will help him this year or our coaches would suddenly focus on this and he’d get it in 2024 where he didn’t before. It didn’t appear he had had anything figured out in the spring game on the shorts. What are you basing this on?

Well, that's a stinker. Would've liked keeping Gavin as backup, but all the best to him in Lexington.

Ouch. Are you implying HC Schiano was the wrong coach for Gavin?

He’s in every practice and seen them both throw.
It seems you are saying HC Schiano made the wrong decision?

Breaking news: RutgersAl off the HC Schiano bandwagon???

It seems he is saying the right coaching will get Gavin to throw shorts and run read options competently. I’m perplexed at what this assessment could be based on. One can’t simply assume after 3 years that our staff could’ve fixed Gavin’s short issues. You could always hope - but nothing about the spring game left reason for optimism. So what then? Also no basis to assume UK will have success resolving these issues. Gavin might not even ever get an opportunity to run with the first team there.

Wow, that's quite a bad slap at Greg and Kirk.
It's not coaching. It's between the ears. And that is not a knock on GW at all. He needs to figure it out. The coaches can't control the motor function between his ears and his arm. That is on him.

Our fanbase, like all fanbases, loves to exaggerate the hell out of player or coach negatives.

I've observed GW throw every pass any QB needs to throw in games. His problem isn't lack of ability or talent. He can make all those throws. The problem is a lack of consistency. He was unarguably unreliable and absolutely missed some important throws in key moments of somegames, including some short and relatively easy throws, at times. No argument about that.

But that is something that is possible to correct. Doesn't always get corrected, but it's possible.

I'm not a professional football coach (and neither are any of you). So none of us can be certain of what will happen with GW. But I can say that I've seen similar baffling consistency issues with soccer players I've coached over the years and seen those players eventually become consistent enough through a combination of constant technical training and gaining composure with experience. Not every case was a success story. But it happens at least as much as it doesn't.

IMO, if GW solves his consistency issue and all his throws are as good as he has demonstrated he can do, he'd be a good college QB. If he became very consistent, he might make an NFL roster.

But sure, those are big "ifs". And it's all speculation. Lots of talented kids suffer consistency issues and there's a limited time to overcome that before their chance is over. I hope GW succeeds, but only time will tell.

It's not just coaching. It's coaching plus his work rate on the issue.

He has the talent. But will he develop the consistency? None of us knows. Not the haters. Not the lovers. None of us.

It’s not an exaggeration. He was terrible for us at short passing. Even the completions were poorly thrown. I’m sure there were a handful of exceptions where he made a lateral that wasn’t a dart or thrown behind a RB on a lateral or short route where someone made a play but it was the exception, not the rule.

If you work using the wrong technique, you will not progress. His work ethic has never been quesTioned.

I’m sure he will work hard to be the best he can be at Kentucky. He played very well against Ohio State last year and Miami.

This - there’s always reason to “hope” a player might suddenly get it. But there’s no reason to “expect” that some coach has the magic bullet ready for Gavin in 2024 for it to all come together. You can hope, nobody is saying it’s impossible. But the default expectation after 3 years shouldn’t be a decisive assumption that someone will suddenly figure something out that they’ve struggled with to this point. This is just irrational.

For whatever reason - the short game didn’t click for Gavin at RU. The spring game only validated that the struggles currently still exist. Maybe a change in scenery will help the kid. But to say - the coaches play UK will simply make it all right for him seems like a quantum leap from where he currently sits. He’s not even projected to be their starter.

His new offensive coordinator at Kentucky was a quarterback coach in the NFL and sent a kid to the NFL from Washington. What we can say is he didn’t get better from last year to this year.

I thought he was capable of showing marginal improvement as a passer and could be more productive as a rusher. Eric Crouch won the Heisman passing around 50%.

Transfer is a win win for some. So I'll just prep everyone for the future messaging now......

  • If Gavin fails in the future......"I told you so"
  • If Gavin manages to succeed in the future ........"Schiano sucks cause he could not develop Gavin"

It took Ralph Fridgeon to turn Gary Nova into a good quarterback. That’s the kind of expertise we needed to fix Gavin, imo. His issues are with his mechanics, imo.

The OC’s success with another QB has nothing to do with Gavin or his issues in the short game until it suddenly turns into a magic bullet. You made a definite statement as if that should be the assumed outcome - as if our coaches were bad and now he has what he needs. Please.

Gavin was able to execute design run plays. He was able to execute design pass plays on longer throws where zip was required on the ball at a reasonable rate. Even into tight space. He could not execute design short plays or make in game adjustments from the pre-snap call (pass or run) with any consistency during his time at RU.

The coaches know best and see practice that fans don’t!! They are playing the QB who gives us the best chance to win!!

Except when they pick AK over Gavin. Then it appears the coaches don’t know best?

Eric Crouch? That's apples and oranges. Nebraska ran an option offense. In his Heisman year, he ran for 1,115 yards, and passed for 1,510 yards, and his passing completion % was not "around" 50%, it was 55.6%. Gavin has never run close to 1,1100 yards. And his passing over 3 years has remained in the 40's. Crouch took a step up from 48.1% to 55.6% in his senior year. So that is not a bad comparison. The question is, will Gavin take the same step up? Maybe. I wish him luck.

Let's not overstate Bush Hamdan's qualifications either. He was in the NFL for one year at the Falcons. And Chris Petersen ran the offensive show at Washington. Chris was a QB in college.

There’s one more thing to say.

The guy we brought in to compete with Gavin performed well enough in spring to beat out the incumbent QB on an RU team that won 7 games and returns the vast majority of its best players. This is exciting - not concerning! Best of luck as you said to Gavin but RU is in an exciting and promising position!

Which game did our D win for us? Lowest pts given up were NW, Temple and Wagner. KM was a beast.

I mean - nobody we beat scored more than 24 on us so… VTech only scored 16.

The only game, in my opinion, where Gavin stood out in leading us to a win as a QB was in the come back against Michigan State. He had a couple nice runs, but we wouldve won a game like Indiana no matter who the QB simply by handing off to Kyle, for example.

But the defense and special teams produced 3 fumbles with one for a TD that started the comeback.

For sure. And Gavin threw two early picks in the game also. My point was that he put the team on his back in a key timely drive in that game.
