Hats off to Hafley

Schiano needs more than 4 wins to have any reasonable claim that he's the right guy for this position at this time.
This more than likely should be taken as a fact.
The only thing that might change that is if Rutgers plays competitively against the big boys in loses to OSU. Michigan and Penn State.
Plays Wisconsin close and in any other loss: the game could have gone either way.
Upsetting one of the big boys/ Wisconsin would also help.

Going undefeated and winning the NC would make even the most anti Greg poster (RU fan that is) a true believer in Schiano's coaching ability.
But if that happened ou can bet this board would lose many of it's members ( including me) to heart attacks from the shock doing that would bring to even the most dedicated Schiano defender 🤫

It would hurt the lesser teams before the better teams... at least to what degree it would hurt them. Name ACC teams would still get hurt a little.. but they have a reserve of recruits who grew up rooting for them. BC.. not so much. Now.. your argument is sound BC vs, say, Pitt, GTech, NC State.

Also, I am not saying it is the only reason Hafley is failing. Just saying it could be contributing. I suppose I might be suggesting that BC is just screwed. Maybe they need lightning in a bottle.. like a Deion Sanders hire.. to make a significant difference. but look at what Deion did right away.. get out of the dying PAC.. do you think that happens without his blessing, or conversely, do you think Deion says yes to Colorado if they stayed in the PAC? (Dec 22 they hire Deion, June 23 announce leaving PAC)
Sorry I just don’t see it. His not working out at BC is very similar to Ash not working out at Rutgers. If anything, his situation is even worse because Ash inherited a program in turmoil while BC was stable and performance collapsed under Hafley’s watch.

Plus Hafley was in the Northeast with access to his recruiting area. Ash was a dead fish out of water.

We have decades of evidence that recruiting NJ and “locally” does not get it done. It doesn’t matter where the talent comes from. And the recruit locally notion is even less important with revolving door rosters and NIL.

You couldn’t be more wrong. The best teams we have had was with jersey guys that were recruited locally by schiano.
The worst teams we have had were with transplants Shea and ash, who failed recruiting jersey guys.

Define local. If you include Pa. and NY I can see it. Especially if you throw in a few Fl. kids. Strictly NJ, no.

Nj guys were big parts of the best teams we ever had in 2006 and 2012. There is no question about it

You can’t compete year-in-year-out in a big time conference in football and hoops where you recruit from 3 or 4 states.

Who said to just recruit from just 3 or 4 states ? That would be idiotic. Talent is in other places besides NJ too.
I hate these hand-waving debates and false narratives. Let's dig in, shall we?

2024 Class:
23 "commits"- 6 from NY/NJ/PA

2023 Class:
20 commits- 8 from NY/NJ/PA

2022 Class:
21 commits- 13 from NY/NJ/PA . . . .BUT- 5 of those guys are 4 star recruits-- maybe we should have looked elsewhere to placate the message board geniuses? 😂

The State of Rutgers has expanded. We recruit heavily in Florida too, as we should

Thank you providing the facts .
The message board geniuses don’t realize though the best teams in rutgers history had a jersey coach with lots of good players from New Jersey .
The Shea and ash teams sucked ass.

I just think that while playing in the BIG east where 3 of the 6 teams are blue bloods who are routine play off contenders, it’s unrealistic to have an expectation that any decent coach should have us regularly picking up 8-9 wins.

Maryland has had exactly one 8 win season since joining the BIG. Same as RU actually. Indiana has one and then their successful Covid year. If we can elevate to being a perennial 6-7 win team with an occasional better year that would be a great start. Things should get a little easier when divisions are eliminated.

How many times have we seen stories about NJ kids playing elsewhere.. especially when against Rutgers... how "motivated" they are. Think NJ kids on Wisconsin, etc. I said then and say now, see where all teh Big Ten teams get their recruits and recruit there. There has to be talent that wants the Big Ten but might be intrigued by being close to NYC and the beaches.

Same for top players all over the country.. while $NIL$ and National Championship chances and the team "name" and brand logo on the uniforms may motivate some, you might find someone who leans our way.. TRY.. if you never ask you'll never know. And it might be expensive to pursue, say, a Texas or California 5-star player who is receptive because he visited his grandparents at a NJ Shore house as a child or loves the idea of New York City... but I am not suggesting we count on such players. Put 5%-10% of the recruiting budget into such an effort. If it works it will become easier to recruit nationally in the future.

2023 Rutgers roster:
NJ 65
PA 13
NY 12
FL 11
Canada, MA, MD 4
OH, WV, TX, VA, DE 2
GA, CO, IL, KY, CT, IN, Australia, Ireland 1

Agreed. Why wouldn’t we root for Flood? He was a guy who got in over his head but he gave his all to Rutgers when he was here. He wasn’t all bad as a HC - as he still owns the 8-5 inaugural season in the BIG on his resume.
Flood immediately began to dismantle everything Schiano did.. just to tell the world that he was not Schiano. You'll ask for examples:

1) insisting he's a players coach
2) sticking with 1 QB no matter what
3) easier preseason including ice cream truck and "club ice" (see #1)
4) not demand his coaches/recruitiers visit every HS in the state every season
5) F*** APR he'll just don a disguise and meet profs in Princeton to get grades up
6) F*** discipline.. feel free to recruit guys who will use stolen credit cards, etc etc. That was under Ash, but, c'mon.. Flood contributed

That's how I knew he would lose the team.
He was like a happy lap wagging his tail with the kids.
There's always a faction that sill that as an opportunity to take liberties.
When Flood met team 1st time as HC he said "This will be my last job."
I figured yeah as HC probably lol

Some like Flood Hafley and Ash dont have ceo capabilities and top out as assistants.

Flood had so much going for him coming in and tried so hard to draw a mustache on a Mona, Lisa and call it his own masterpiece. Just a complete tool as a head coach.

Again, trying to differentiate himself from Schiano.. the guy that hired him, advanced him to associate head coach in line to become the interim coach that was forced into head coaching because Barchi wouldn't open up a budget for a head coach hire... a guy who did pretty well at Oregon and now Miami.

Flood took shots at Schiano in pathetic ways... just like his pathetic attempt to influence that professor.

I remember it differently. Flood mostly kept the Schiano traditions going. Ash did away with everything related to Schiano. I remember there was a whole article on that.

Is there a spot on our coaching staff for Hafley? Remember him being an ace recruiter for us back in the day.

Would welcome him back as a recruiter when he gets canned. Or does he go to NFL as an assistant somewhere?

Apparently our buddy Jerry Palm was impressed. He put them to his bowl projections released yesterday (kid you not).

The best part is Northern illinois lost to FCS Southern Illinois last week...that's how bad BC is.

Hats off though
