As the above posters mention, Butch followed up Brian Kelly at his first two jobs. At Tenn the rankings of 5 previous recruiting classes were as follows:

2009 - 10
2010 - 9
2011 - 13
2012 - 17
2013 - 21

He did recruit the following:

2014 - 5
2015 - 5
2016 -15

But given that level of talent he was only able to go over .500 in conference once at Tenn.

They won 5 games - 2 years in a row before he got there. He had back to back 9 win seasons. What are you talking he went over 500 once? Stop lying smh

Butch would be a Big time Hire ..Schiano would be a hire because fans/donors attended the Big Louisville win when we finished 2nd in The Big East and stormed the field and it was the best thing that happened to them Athletically related. Butch coached in Big East 3 years and has 2 Rings,,Schiano coached in Big East 11 years has Zero Rings

No other coach has won more than 7 games - in over 11 years at Tennessee.. Butch won 9 twice. Butch knows how to win - and his resume is proven. It can't be ignored
He knows how to ride Brian Kelly’s coattail. The one time he didn’t he got fired.

Those who know and watch football know he did a good job there but got ran out by the delusional Tenn mob that thinks it's still the 90s. He recruited well and they lost a ton of heartbreaking games to teams they should not have even beat. Look where Tenn is now - they are celebrating barely making a bowl game.

Doubt that...He heard as everyone else infatuated with Schiano (with a sub 500 record against D1 Teams and no championships that the hire was done and he opted out) thats over and Lets Hire a Winning coach!

lmao....no you dope, he heard Rutgers is cheap and wants no part of this job.

Hey Jerkey ..RU is Ready to pay 4m/year for a good coach..Thats not cheap! He opted out because the buzz from a Coach not ever.500 and the Fan base salivating over him being hired. Butch will be all over coming here!

oh boy, you’re really out of the loop, forgot I’m on the free board. You realize every news outlet is bashing us because we’re cheap, right?

Can’t wait to see your reaction when you see who we actually get.

Third place. He lost the head to head with Dantonio.

I don't understand the purpose of denigrating what Schiano did at RU. No conference championships, etc., etc., etc. Ok I get it.
But seeing the lack of commitment by the University do any of you guys think that anyone could do better then 7 or 8 wins and a once in a generation 10 win season with possibly a NYD bowl?
I didn't think so.Greg was the only guy in the past 45 years who made RU football relevant and not a joke that it was and has since become. Any wonder why people would want him back???

Im good with hiring Butch. He was actually my first choice. I just don't have faith in Pat Hobbs to do tight by us.

Butch isn't coming. Nobody with any hope of options in the next year or so would risk it. The entire country is ridiculing this program, and for the first time, I'm sad to say it's well deserved.

Trevor Lawrence grew up in Kingsport, TN thorough 8th grade and idolized Peyton Manning. He wears #16 (Peyton's UT #, not his NFL #). He and his parents were huge UT fans. He wanted to commit to Tennessee at camp his junior year. Butch told him he wasn't good enough to play at UT. Butch missed on a lot of huge, big time recruits. Butch also completely decimated UT's strength and conditioning program. As someone who grew up in NJ and has always been a Rutgers fan (outside of the rare occasion when they play UT), if he gets the job I really hope he has learned from his mistakes and spending a couple of years in the Satan coach's rehabilitation program. Unfortunately I think the BOG's inability/refusal to go all in on the guy that was a perfect fit (Schiano) does not bode well for the future. They could hire Nick Satan and have Urban Meyer, Dabo Swinney and Bob Stoops on staff and not win if the administration and BOG are not all on board. We went through something similar at UT in the mid 2000's and we're still trying to recover.

Yeah. Cheap shot my part. I apologize. I'm better than that usually. Just burnt from all of this and I truly am more open minded and just trying to be funny.
I am certainly not perfect . far from it.
Nothing wrong with that. I've always been a Rutgers fan (grew up in Jersey), but also a UT fan (UT Alum and season ticket holder). This whole Schiano/Butch thing is just bizarre to me as an outsider. There were some good things about Butch, but the behind the scenes info was scary. I think Schiano would do very well at RU, and it's a shame they don't make it happen. If it ends up being Butch, I hope he's learned from his mistakes. Most coaches get better with each job if they're continuously learning. I hope he does.

Tennessee only has 4 -- 7+ winning seasons in the last 11 years.. 3 of em came from Butch. But go ahead and trash the coach who has had the most success there in over a decade

And Pruitt is a million times worse. Tenn fans celebrated this weekend like they won a national championship just for making a bowl game with a very weak schedule - which Butch did in his sleep at UT.

Interesting fact for you. If Pruitt beats Vanndy, he will have 5 conf wins, that’s the high watermark for Butch.

You realize Butch also pulled a 4-8 after he decimated our recruiting and S&C programs, right? That's why he got his ass fired and hasn't ben able to get a HC job since. I like Rutgers, and I hope they do well. Old Butch would be a disaster. I hope he has learned from his mistakes, that's all. As for Pruitt, the guy has won 3 NC's as a DC and was recruiter of the year a couple of times. He's rebuilt the S&C program, and recruited well. UT fans are happy with him because we're going to a bowl in year two (after taking over a 4-8 program that somebody left him) and we get 15 extra practices when we'll be returning 8 defensive starters and 8 defensive starters along with both kickers next year. I consider myself a Rutgers fan, but I just think that if you hire Butch, you'd better hope he's learned from his mistakes. I hope your fan base revolts like ours did, only this time for Schiano. He's not asking for anything that is unreasonable if you want to compete in the Big 10. He got it done last time he was here and he'll do even better if he's given the tools to make it happen this time. Jersey guy, know NJ, and has recruited the area well. Your BOG (and Hobbs) are basically saying they don't want to invest in the program if they don't hire him.

HE took over at central michigan after brian kelly left. Kelly left him with the most talent in the mac. He had a nfl qb, antonio brown at wr and 5 nfl ol.
At cincy he followed brian kelly again who once again left him with a stacked team.

You do realize that it was the worst decade in UT's football history, don't you? He also decimated our S&C program and gave us our first 4-8 season in school history. He's not all bad, if you hire him you just better hope he learned from his mistakes and his two years in Satan's coaches rehabilitation program.

Same guy who told Trevor Lawrence he wasn't good enough to play at Tennessee and then there's JJ Watt...directly from his Wiki page:
Watt received a scholarship offer from Central Michigan University and matriculated there. He has stated that he was led to believe by Butch Jones that, as a tight end, he would have the opportunity to score touchdowns. At Central Michigan, he played 14 games, compiling 77 receiving yards and 8 receptions.[13][14] Watt's coaches, led by Butch Jones, suggested that he move to offensive tackle, but Watt decided to forgo his starting spot and scholarship to walk on at the University of Wisconsin, where he played as a defensive end.[15]
