How do you think this year's recruiting class will compare to Flood's Feb 2015 class?

I am guessing they will be similar on paper (stars ratings) but Flood's 2015 may be a little higher. The reason I think this is because Ash is new and lost a few committed players. Also, he is recruiting guys who are losing commitments elsewhere or were top FCS recruits. I don't think he will be able to steal a top 3 start or 4 star kid from a more traditional program this year but may be able to steal kids from midmajor or fcs schools.

Agree 100% with OP. Hiring the staff came a bit late in the game, hence losing commitments. Also trying to all of a sudden pop into local high school coaches offices to introduce himself isn't gonna fly overnight for Ash.
He needs time, and a much better product on the field next year....baby steps.

I will state that Ash will make a few errors in his haste to get quality signees. But do not be misguided with your anti Flood hate, but Flood had a good eye for talent. He just did not reel in all the talent he saw. But to answer you Al, it will not be a high star ranking but the quality of the young men's character will be a super step up.
Al here is something to ponder barnwell 4/5 star player but a character issue that in truth cost Flood his job.
barnwell's nefarious activity cost other players as well which snowballed to cause Rutgers any chance of a winning season yes the ass was a good FB player but he cost Rutgers dearly
You can keep dog shit like him, 4/5 stars and all

How did hiring the staff come late? We fired flood right after the season and hired Ash less than a week later. The dead period started a week after that.

The irony of this coaching staff from all over the country is we can pick up players from all over the country. So we are no longer a regional school but moving into a national brand.
Change is coming and it is here right now!

Good points. Ironic though how Flood got lambasted for signing 2 and 3 star players with no FBS or P5 offers, and some of those same folks who did the lambasting are now silent. I never cared about stars. I trust the coaches to evaluate players to fit their system and their ability to coach them up. I am more confident in this ability now than the last several years. That's not so say that more 4 and 5 star recruits would be great, but we must take baby steps.

I think the rating of this class will be irrelevent and the thing we should be focused on is whether the Staff is getting the athletes that fit the systems they are implementing AND have the right attitude.

A 3* QB that fits our new offense is much more valuable to us than a 4* Qb who doesn't. Ditto with receivers (WR, Slot, TE/H). Ditto with OL. It won't prove out for 3 years, but the key is whether they are getting the right types of players/kids that they can build up/coach up.

I agree with Zap. We need more passion. I'm not a Flood hater and I do think he had some very good qualities. If you ask around coaching circles he was a highly respected technician and a good run game planner. The players including the NFL starts all loved him. But IMO he lacked discipline and possibly did not fire these kids up enough. The off field issues did him in. So we move forward and I hope Ash takes us up a notch.

Flood had a whole year to get that 2015 class.

I have always said that this class was a lost cause when Flood was here much less when there was a coaching change, which always scares off commits.

I think it will end up better than expected anyway, hopefully.

But the 2017 class will be the 1st true Ash class. We can judge that compared to the Flood's classes (1st year doesn't count, as that was GS's class) if anyone still cares about Flood by that point.

This year's class will be what it will be. It was ranked in the 50's prior to Flood's firing so let's get some kids in here to fill spots at positions of need AND, hopefully, we land a few big names, or swing a couple, late in the game. Here's the only thing that matters:

The 2017 class will blow away any of Flood's 3 recruited classes (2013, 2014 and 2015).

It all boils down to the QB recruits if Ash can sign two of the three QB's then this is a successful class, at this point getting a leg up on the new offense starts with multi dimensional QB's and that needs to happen. Also need to keep the Barbour and hang onto the wide receivers that he wants and perhaps find a few more speed guys (WR's).

You want to play semantics.. change is change it can be here and still be coming, as change changes there for Change is here and as it changes it is coming as new change

as long as we don't continually change into what we once were................

The above is just conjecture and wishful thinking. We really don't have any evidence as to how this coaching staff will be able to recruit in the future. So far they've landed two recruits, a Rivals rated 3-star from New York and 2-star from New Jersey. But that doesn't really mean much. Only time will tell.

So how long has it been since we hired Ash and he filled out his staff? Flood wasn't fired in Sept or Oct was my point.....

You're setting the bar really low. Flood just couldn't convince enough high caliber players to come to RU. I believe ASH and his assistants will do a much better job especially after they see the energy on the field next year. I'm hoping the days of losing to the B1G elite by 40 points are over. If recruits see a competitive team, some decent wins - maybe a bowl game, they'll sign to play football here.

Conjecture? Sure. Wishful thinking? Nah, not really, I mean I'm not expecting a Top 25 class in 2017 but I'll stick by my comments based on a couple of things:

- it has been stated, by coaches and people in the business alike, that Ash and quite a few other guys on this staff are top-notch recruiters

- Flood's classes weren't too good. You might want to take a look at their rankings here, on 247, and on Scout, for the last 3 years

Could I be wrong? Yup. Will I? Put it this way, if I were still gambling, I'd like my odds.

Flood's class was not ranked in the 50s. At different times this calls was rated in the high 20's to high 30's in Scout and Rivals. 247 had this class in the low 40s. Then Hewtt decomitted and rankings dropped a little. Once Flood was fired the decomitts started and the class dropped drastically.

You continue to bash Flood even after he is fired. You lie about this recruiting class rankings and you are already making excuses why we will be lucky to win 4 games in 2016, saying the schedule is the hardest ever. If Flood was still here and we had his class we would have won 8 games in 2016. I expect nothing less from Ash.

This class was ranked 52nd here and 54th over at 247 when Flood was fired (slightly higher on Scout, at about 45) but was NEVER ranked in the 20's. Where on EARTH did you come up with that?

No, not ironic. RU routinely pulled in 7 or 8 top 20 jersey kids when Flood took over. Two years later we had none. No irony, just horrible recruiting.

[roll] I don't care whether Flood was able to assemble the #1 ranked recruiting class in August/September; the only ranking that matters is the one of the class that the head coach gets to sign on February 2nd.

LOL! So you managed to:

1) prove my point that the class was never ranked in the 20's (see: you made it up) and

2) post tweets from August and September, long before other classes began to jump ours, left-and-right.

Well done! [roll]

Once again: by Mid-November the class ranking dropped, a lot, down into the 50's on both Rivals and 247 and into the mid-40's on Scout. Not my fault that you weren't paying attention. Shit, you can probably go back about 100 pages and find threads that actually discussed the class rankings at the time.

2 out of the three QBs, huh? You do know that Odin and Scott are more highly recruited than Russo right?

As far as Flood's recruiting, the evidence is all around you regarding how the NJ HS coaches looked at Flood. But nahhhhh, you guys still want to believe the urban legend. More than HALF of the guys of his 2016 class would have decommitted, even if Rutgers had retained him - that is not conjecture, that is fact. They were looking around. As soon as better options opened up - they would have bailed - like Rene!!!!

New school, new town, new state, no local connections, former RU employees negative recruiting against him, so called fans undermining him - given the cards the Ash has been dealt, I am actually SHOCKED at how well he and his staff are doing. Guess what? It's not even LOI day yet! Just wait and see.

It will be worse than any of Flood's classes, as expected. Flood left him a class that was already not that great (given the decommits or soon to decommits) and Ash is not a name coach. We chose youth over experience and the downside of that is - you are very likely to get off to a slow start. Either Ash is a great developer of talent, or we will be looking for a new coach in the 2020 time frame.

wherever Flood's class was ranked back when he was fired, my guess is that had he not been fired, the ranking would have dropped. based on our on field performance, the off the field problems and what would be considered a shaky future for an embattled head coach, the class would have suffered from serious de commitments. Flood would then have to scramble to fill out the class, much like a couple of years ago.
