Yes..horrible start. All he has done that I've seen is show up three week late for work (hello Terry Shea) lower overall expectations and do a poor job of selling his vision given the ratio of quality exits to quality commits. Mock the Tie all you want, he couldn't have been any worse.
Gotta take issue with at least 2 points -
(1.) "Mock the Tie all you want, he couldn't have been any worse" - OK you think Al Golden would get it done - fine - and somewhere . some time he might - but here and now - NO! - like it or not he is currently 'toxic' - (did he get any serious consideration? anywhere? NO) - he needs to renovate himself - yes, the people who are casting him as the 'village idiot of college football' are wrong - but he needs to do things & give it time to let the air out of that balloon. Rutgers needed someone with current connections to winning - and the truth is that Ash has those connections & endorsements from Meyer, Herman, and many more.
(2.) "All he has done that I've seen is show up three week late for work "
Really? in all of this time you saw & heard about - NOTHING - and therefore assume that nothing was going on? and so you draw an equivalence to a coach hired 20 years ago who flat-out took time off before getting to campus .... Maybe you should review the following, consider the extensive advance work that had to go into making all of this happen & get through the extensive searching, interviewing of
multiple prospects for each position, evaluating, negotiating and closing the deal to accomplish the following for the Rutgers program:
December 7 - Official hiring of Head Coach Chris Ash - Ohio State
December 9 - Special Teams Coordinator Vince Okruch - Ohio State
December 13 - Offensive Coordinator Drew Mehringer - Houston
December 18 - Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Kenny Parker – Ohio State
December 19 - Assistant Strength Coach Gary Beemer - Hawaii
December 22 - Offensive Line Coach A.J. Blazek - Western Illinois
December 24 - Wide Receivers Coach Zak Kuhr - James Madison
December 28 - Assistant Defensive Backs Coach Aaron Henry - Arkansas
December 29 - Defensive Backs Coach Bill Busch – Ohio State
December 30 - Defensive Coordinator Jay Niemann - Northern Illinois
December 31 - Defensive Line Coach Shane Burnham – Iowa State
December 31 - Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach –Luke Rose – U of Akron
January 3 - Dir of HS Relations – Rick Mantz - Passaic High & former president of the New Jersey Football Coaches Association
January 4- Director of Recruiting - Adam Caltury – Ohio State
January 6- Director of Player Development - Nick Quartaro - North Texas
January 15 -Running Backs Coach – Jafir Williams – Purdue University
January 15 -Asst Strength & Conditioning - Justin Springer – Kansas University
You seriously look at this and can honestly say -
"All he has done that I've seen is show up three week late for work " ???
If you have ever had to fill an open position, you know that many, many hours of work must be invested - far beyond the specific interview.
- and also consider that the extensive organized recruiting effort does not spontaneously spring to life - lots of planning & groundwork had to be done .
Frankly, it is highly, highly questionable that, at this point in time & with the current set of perceptions, that Al Golden could persuade a staff of this caliber to be willing to take this step with with him with their careers.
