College football is very elitist and stringent with their championship process (1 overall loss max, usually conference champion, Power 5 schedule)
College basketball on the other end lets in teams that are barely above .500 in conference.

If you were designing a basketball playoff to include "only teams who DESERVE to play for a championship":

How many teams are you putting in?
And which teams are in this year?

Obviously, "deserves" is subjective and gets widely debated around CFB playoff selection time.

The 16 seed games in Dayton is BS. They won their conference, put them in the "real" tournament. Dayton should be reserved for the last few at-larges only.

And let's be real, that would get better ratings. People would rather see Belmont face NC State (for example) than St. Francis PA vs. Omaha.

I agree with the 16 seeds playing onThursday or Friday as they won their conference. However , the 11 seeds that playon Tuesday and Wednesday are the last few teams in the dance but remarkably one has advanced to the Sweet 16 in 3 of the last 4 years. Something about getting on a roll playing Tuesday , THURSDAY , AND SATURDAY OR WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY, AND Sunday. So you are making them go through the gauntlet.

I dont like them. Its a money grab. Those last 4 in are scraping the barrell. Plus i do think its fair to make the two lowest have to play in

Those teams have had some success though, including VcU getting to the final 4.

I took the question differently. I thought the original poster was looking for something very compact, competition among the elite teams only. If that were the model I’d say 16 teams.

Obviously, would be looking at something very different than what the NCAA tournament has been traditionally.
