other team shoots 17% from 3, we only have 9 turnovers, fouls were in line....we shoot 42%...Getty's played great but Freeman didn't show up big...

was at a funeral...but if I had just checked on this I would have bet a win. in a nutshell...WTF happened (other than the usual horrendous foul shooting?)..what's the color comments from today..

Check the rebound stats.

Minny has a very athletic lineup, and they hit the offensive boards and scored in the paint... This plus the elephant in the room... Free throws. Good effort and hustle, I stayed in my seat till the end, but another one of those could have been games.

yeah, I saw that. so we got man handled in the paint I guess?
Plus we are not going to beat anyone by allowing 70+ points. Shake it off and be ready for the next one.
You forgot one stat you must not have looked at free throws we were 10-22 and we missed a few front ends so in essence it was 10-25. Can't win a high school game shooting free throws that way

Unfortunately, that stat line doesn't jump out at me anymore.

As a team, they shot 13-15 (86.7%)... well above their season 69.8% average. Meanwhile, our 10-22 (45.5%) was well below our 62.3% average. If both teams had shot their average on the same number of FTs, Minnesota would have had 3 fewer points and we'd have had 4 more.

Also, while the foul counts were even, Minnesota had a lot of "and ones".

Of the 10 fouls we committed on shooters, 6 were on made baskets... and they made 5 of those shots. So, instead of 10 shots becoming 20 FTs (0-20 points), their 10 shots became 6 made baskets and 14 FTs (12-26 points). They also ended up only missing one FT on a shooting foul, giving them 25 points for those 10 fouled shots.

Still, that's only a part of the story.

Minnesota out rebounded Rutgers by 6 they also had 6 more points in the paint than Rutgers. Not really man handled. Minnesota had 9 more second chance points off of the same number of offensive rebounds Rutgers had. But as others pointed out, the woefully bad FT shooting, at home no less, is a real dagger

ok, thanks. So it really was just another close winnable game that once gain came down to the foul line? Geez. (just like what J230 said above I treated that like a given and why the rest suggested a possible win). Such a shame I really think 2-3 more wins so far with 70% there.

yeah - we really closed the gap on rebounds in the 2nd half. admire the effort there. as Pikiell said in the post game, we didn't do a lot of the little things yesterday that we normally do. that's why he was so frustrated with our guys. and he benched Freeman for the last 7 mins as he just wasn't playing within the system (O and D).

the FTs clearly killed us. and it informs the other team's defensive strategy. It's clear that they aggressively foul our guys 'early' (i.e. before a shooting motion)...and if they get away with it (sometimes they do), it's a bonus. If they don't, we're guaranteed to miss 1 shot. And double bonus if we're in 1 and 1, cause we often miss the first FT.

the FT shooting situation is absolutely killing us this year. killing us.

but, I love this team's effort. I love this staff's effort. and I really like that he's giving Thiam and Eugene extended run. we're going to need them to develop.

those still killing CJ...sorry, but they're idiots. we are going to miss him greatly next year.

Yes. It was 2 separate halves. Half 1 was awful and #2 was the rebounding we have been accustomed to.

Bad teams find a way to lose. 1st half we were sluggish and didn't defend well. Half 2 we got too many empty trips solely from foul shots.

No consolation, but last year we weren't blaming losses on foul shots. I would have been ecstatic if that was the case.
