You see so many college football players skip bowl games but not a lot in basketball players who are projected lottery picks skipping the tourney.

Zion is looking at hundreds of millions in earnings. Why risk it to play in college anymore He has proven he is the numbah 1 pick. Think he should shut it down?

YES if he's at risk--do you think Duke will really give a crap after he stops playing for them--you'd have to be insane to risk your future and your family's future.

Down the road or even this year not playing for Duke could be a strike against him.

I would totally understand why he would shut it down. In 2024ish when he is a free agent I might think twice at chosing him as the face of the franchise if i was a GM if he stopped playing for Duke.

The NBA cares about 1 thing -- talent. They don't care about what you did in college, good or bad. If he is star-level for the NBA he could publicly shit on Coach K and the Duke logo and noone in the League would think twice about it.

Zero chance at this. A gm will sign him in 2024 based on his performance in NBA. Not if he sat out at duke.

I am not saying all GMs would. What i am saying if I were a GM and I had a choice of 3 players to give max contracts to and build my team around AND all 3 were equal there is no doubt it would matter to me.

You look around professional sports these days and you have to start paying more attention to character. Whether it is Bell or Brown in Pittsburgh or Davis in NBA this stuff really matters.

I despise Duke so i hope he doesn't come back.

However, looking at this objectively, Character is one thing a GM might look at and could be a minor impact. Intelligence is another one and I'm not sure it makes sense to come back this late in the season if there is ANY risk of re-injury. I do think that coming back will temporarily endear him to more fans everywhere, so there's that to consider also. People will soon forget, however. Almost no one remembers Kyrie's injury at Duke any longer.

I hope he doesn't come back because I want to see schools on the 1 and done route get hurt.

I would not say not playing has anything to do with intelligence. It is putting one self's interest in front of the team.

Now if he was able to spin it and say I really am hurt and I didn't make the rules that said I had to go to college and i wanted to go the NBA right away....

Fair point.

If you are a GM, you may actually see the potential athlete shutting it down as having a better head on his shoulders and a plus to his decision making skills.

Players should be able to go right to NBA at this point.

If you can okay, YOU PLAY!!! I’m so sick of this crap.

Seriously just change the rules....The fact that were even talking about someone “slowing it down” at the end of the season is disgusting. Just let these kids go right to the NBA, or Europe, or whatever, I’m so sick of this one and done shit.

That's not going to matter to NBA GMs, and it isn't going to stop NBA teams from backing up the Brink's truck for Kyrie Irving, who played fewer games at Duke than Zion has. Talent matters, not some increasingly vague notion of "character."

I think he'll play in the NCAA Tourney.. that was a fluke thing.. he is a sturdy guy.. he'll want to play... but he'll also go for the draft.

Michael Porter Jr. came back for the tournament last year.

Wasn't very effective and probably wanted to show scouts he was healthy but the people saying "oh he should just sit out" are missing the fact that these guys are basketball players and competitors (usually) and they want to be out there playing and winning.

Amazing difference between here and the Football Board.
He should absolutely shut it down.

I have an alternate take though - what if Barrett gets super hot in the tourney and Zion keeps missing 3s every game?
The more he plays the more he misses shots and could lose the #1 pick.

Why wouldn't he opt for the draft? He was slated as the #1 player.

If healthy... his future is bright and he'll bring excitement to the NBA imo on a level of a young LeBron.

PS I hate Duke, UNC, Kansas, Kentucky and all the b-ball mills...but Zion has "IT".

Yeah, no one will remember anything about Duke if he has already produced in the NBA at that point.

some of you are so naive or idealistic--if he is at risk or can't get insurance ,he stops playing for Duke--heck , do you actually think his own future matters less than Duke's success--the school and their fans in reality give a crap unless it benefits them--especially if he misses a free throw to win championship

Does this mean I won’t get to see Bruno go up against Zion in Final 4 or National Championship.

For the record I’d be on pins and needles every game if he was my son. One and done rule is stupid. Maybe Zion would have been better of taking a year off from hoops and playing golf with Tony Romo or getting on a professional esports team.

Not sure what his mindset is but this gives him the perfect excuse to shut it down, if he was so inclined. Based on the current rules, I certainly wouldn't blame him. He may very well want to win an NCAA championship but he has nowhere to go but down from the #1 pick in the draft.

Irving actually did play in the (ncaa) tournament. Zion should sit out until then, and reevaluate at that time. If knee injury is minor, and fully healed by then, why not play? Injury was a fluke due to equipment, not contact. Injury due to contact, much less likely with someone his size in 6 college games. Worst case ,he could always sue Nike...

character has nothing to do with this. if a gm cant see this than he is an idiot and should not be a gm. zion is not playing to protect his future. once he went down last night everyone had the same thought in their mind. if any gm says anything about not picking him because he doesnt come back than the follow up question should be would blowing out his knee hurt is draft position? if the answer it yes the GM should be fired.

The Nike equipment issue is a much bigger story to me.
Especially since it wasnt a routine equipment "failure".
Imagine if Zion got seriously hurt and the questions it would raise.

I still rememeber people blaming Addidas for the Derrick Rose issues.

On the other hand...the kid can cement himself as a true baller and the type you want to build around by one simple Twitter

Back with the duke jersey on as soon as I can....

Agreed. I could see an interesting lawsuit against Nike if his sneaker blowout actually caused a year-long ACL injury. Having said that, if I'm Zion I probably don't rush back and do everything I can to protect my No. 1 pick status and $$$.

Never had a Nike shoe that I liked. Always too narrow and uncomfortable. I avoid the brand.

Doesn't he have to show that in a game, he can walk, run, jump, move laterally, etc. ? Yeah, I know. He'll work out for the top teams in the draft. But a few games before he gets there would count heavily, it seems to me.

Or going pro in Europe.

Interesting NBA info on the TNT telecast;

Barkley said that Zion's shoes looked "old" - i.e. a couple weeks or months.
Said Zion, and any kid, needs to get new shoes as often as possible so that they have no wear and tear on them.

Barkley said he would go 1 week and then change shoes.
Then he said Shaq and Jordan wore new shoes every single game.
