can someone here possibly provide a rational explanation? not looking for witty jokes...

what's in NC State? any ties to that area?
most likely will play right away there, guess he didn't see any burn at RU his first year?

thought he was real close to Jabbie? maybe he has closer friends in Raleigh?

Maybe he likes the coaches, maybe the school, maybe North Carolina, maybe their apple pie is really good.

Yup. Ash and staff tried to contact him multiple times for an official visit, he just flat out was not interested. Guess he just wasn't jelling with them..

There are many many plausible thoughts that could have come into play - but no one definitive explanation -
yes, He could be sees NC State as a more 'fully operational' program and reduces questions about where he would fit .... or maybe his girlfriend is going to be going to Elon University
who knows .

Duke, NCState, NC, and Wake Forest provide a great college atmosphere down there, much more than central Jersey. Good luck to him.

You guys are funny! As an alumni of both schools(before you knock me- I only wear RU gear as it is really my only team I support athletically) RU is hands down way way behind NCSU is support, funding, etc. i have sat in the alumni VIP boxes and toured various facilities. They are impressive. That factored in with the weather, cheap cost of living and huge college scene. Imagine 3 RUs within a 20 miles radius with UNC, NCSU, and Duke.

An alumni?

In many ways new jersey is the least provincial state in america. The people there see staying in the same locale as failure to thrive or low on ambition. Success and ambition are measured by being adventurous, not by staying in the same place. I think many on here mistake this for a desire to "get away from new Jersey."

Maybe he has a thing for the Carolinas. He originally committed to South Carolina. It was 20 plus years ago, and not Raleigh, but I have yet to find another place where the locals were so transfixed on the Civil War. One local repeatedly referred to it as "the war y'all lost." Curious statement considering y'alls' ancestors weren't even United States residents during the Civil War. Churches, pawn shops and boiled peanuts were my other memories of North Carolina.

This isn't rocket science. Rutgers had a bad year on the field and was all over the news with bad press. Not to mention that other schools have positive aspects to sell as well. We now have a coach with no history or relationships with our current commits. Next year should hopefully look much different.

North Carolina: College Basketball, BBQ, Krispy Kreme, Nascar, Tobacco, Poultry, Hogs, Ultra-Conservative Politics, Outer Banks, Blue Ridge Parkway/Mountains, High Tech (RTP), Finance (Charlotte), Golf, the Hurricanes, the Panthers, and ... Growth.

NC State is a great landing spot.

Don't completely blame the kid. Really glad to see the shine on UNC is wearing off.

Meh, the degree is inferior to RU (No offense to the poster with the MBA from NC State), and he is not representing NJ. He is representing NC. And also, is NC State a better team than Rutgers at this time? A successful career at RU will probably bring more media exposure than one at NC State as well.

One reason: Raleigh is not in the state of New Jersey.

But it's not an improvement. And in that it's different than Chapel Hill and Durham (well, at least the Duke campus).

Also, despite whatever sleaze the athletic department has fostered over the last decade, a diploma from UNC still has a cache when you walk in for an interview in Manhattan.

Because he is a 17 year old kid, who knows why they do what they do. At least he is going to a legitimate state university. At least he is not like the knucklehead from Conn. who chose a non P5 school with a clearly lesser academic reputation because he had a better "relationship with the staff".

To each his own. I lived down near the beaches in Wilmington. To me it was: Churches, pawn shops, narrow minded religious bigots, lousy pizza, lousy subs, awful public schools. They had nice beaches though.

These threads are so pointless. If someone from NC picked Rutgers, they would have the exact same thread on their message board. "Why would anyone voluntarily choose to go to New Jersey?" blah blah blah...

The bottom line is different people see different things as positives. Maybe it the people, maybe its the area. But whatever it was, he didn't want to be here, which is the far more important aspect to focus on. If recruits are seeing NCST as a better alternative, you need to look at Rutgers, not at NCST.

At one point was thinking RU had a great chance of landing this kid. Shame he picked NCST in the ACC over RU and the B1G. Good luck to him

who cares about this guy's decision but those that knock RU compared to other schools based on a "tour" of that other school or their really hearsay experience have probably never recently toured RU or it's sports facilities--and these are RU fans???

How the heck do you guys know this?? Maybe he developed a relationship with Campanile and now that he's gone, he feels no connection to RU? But me, I know nothing. I have no connections, I don't know any recruits, I don't know any coaches.

People here post the same thing every time a Jersey kid commits somewhere. Why oh why can't RU get these kids?

Simple answer.....MOST DON'T WANT TO STAY IN NEW JERSEY. Hell, your average HS grad doesn't want to either. Why is it so hard to understand?

You can build the walls or fence the gardens but I firmly believe if Ash is going to be successful it will primarily be on the back of out of state recruits

We go to Arizona a few times per year. My 15 year old son regularly says that he likes it better in Arizona because the weather is nicer and it is a lot less crowded than NJ. It's not rocket science. Despite my comments about NC, there are a lot of attractive things. The area I was in was a little backwoods, but the Raleigh and RTP area are fairly cosmopolitan and have a lot of attractive features.

I've been down to the Raleigh/Durham area a couple of times for work. When I was there, I could absolutely see the appeal to someone from out-of-state. The NC State campus itself is actually pretty nice - you get the big college feel and proximity to a good-sized city without it being overwhelming.

Look I wanted this kid as badly as anyone but in the end who knows what goes on in a 17 - 18 year olds mind. We have the benefit of experience and know the grass is not always greener far from home. Time will tell if it was the right decision for him.
