But if it wasn't a flat tire, a stopped watch or dead phone battery, massive traffic jam or something else, why, when you're in the last days/hours of a decision that could affect the rest of your life, would a smart, mature guy like you take even the slightest chance of breaking a team rule?

Rettig could do so well in the first half against NSU that it puts you on the sideline holding a clipboard for the rest of the year. And maybe next year, too, unless circumstances send you off to an FCS school.
