Leaks??

I was wondering this myself. Serious question, why the strong appeal of Al Golden?

I know we looked at him post Temple to replace Schiano, but it seems like his stock has fallen a lot and he struggled at Miami. I don't see how he could do better at RU now that we are in a much tougher conference. I guess he is better than Flood, but a broom would better coach than Flood at this point.
And, would we have to convince the "wife" to move north as well..? :sunglasses:

coaches get fired and rehired all the time. I hate the shirt and tie, he's not my top choice, but we could do way worse than Al Golden.
Just curious why do you and others rip him for wearing a shirt and tie? Plenty of great football coaches dressed in a similar manner, Tom Landry for example maybe even Vince Lombardi, and basketball coaches all do it.

It has been a long time since Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi have bee on the sidelines.
Maybe wearing a tie scream "no stain!"

either of those guys look like a sweaty mess after the game?

That would be a pretty shocking choice given his record and how Barchi thinks of sports I can't seem him getting a sniff.

Forget what many here think of Julie, this is her first big hire. Maybe she really does want to make a splash. I could see names like Butch Davis and Charlie Strong on her list.

I wonder if the appeal of Golden has taken a hit after his lack of success in Miami.

This is what I am hearing from very good sources within Rutgers:

Flood to be fired for cause shortly after season is over.

Julie's short list is as follows:

Schiano
Herman
Strong
Davis
Fleck

God, Please let this be this case!!

That is a solid list which would pretty much mirror my own.

The leaks are coming already. If you read this board carefully, plenty of hints have been dropped.

The second you need to reach out to high level donors, operational security is compromised. You never know who is friends with someone. You never know who is plugged into certain high powered HS programs. You never know who is plugged into recruits and what they are being told (even if in between the lines).

If you get a piece of what seems like innocuous information here, another piece there, a third piece from over here, you can paint yourself a pretty good picture of what is happening in the AD right now.

The wheels are turning to move on Flood. Does that absolutely, unequivocally mean he's out? No, not yet. Certain things need to fall in place.

Certain messages from the fan and donor base can still be sent.

As was posted here over the weekend, the best message you can send is to return your UNUSED tickets. I'm not suggesting some massive protest. BUT...BUT...if you have more tickets than you need, can sell or give away, rather than keeping them in your sock drawer, mail the UNUSED stub to the AD's office with a note.

Excellent assessment.

Certainly there are very credible leaks already. I would add, though, that leaks regarding specific names should be met with some skepticism. Just because a name is floated, doesn't meant that there is interest from either side. Names could be floated just to get feedback.

A lot of coaches did 40 years ago. He just looks like a wannabe.

After the game? Only a moron would wear a tie in So. Florida to coach a football game.

Al Golden three card monty. Look at my tie, not my coaching.

what is everyone's opinion of Butch Davis as RU head coach? This is my first time seeing his name mentioned. I think that would be a great hire for RU, especially with all of the HS coaches looking for a "named" coach. That would be very interesting.

Fantastic Hire. During his time at Miami, he ran a tight ship and had controls in place to ensure that players went to class and kept their grades up. Pretty certain that Schiano transplanted many of his ideas to Rutgers, which is why Rutgers has been a model program in terms of apr ranking for a while now. Excellent recruiter but his X's and O's aren't as good as elite coaches, but he has the potential to land so much talent that x's and o's won't matter. Successfully recruited the northeast, canada, and florida while at Miami. Probably as good a hire we are capable of making.

- how have others NOT realized that this could very well be the case? There are 2 things going through my mind right now:

1) this is either the longest "external investigation" since the Sandusky fiasco, or

2) we've already received the reports and are waiting until the season is over to drop the bomb because, as many have already assumed, there IS more bad news coming for Flood

- not a bad short list

- seems like 1 group of fans here, who have made it very obvious we're already talking about the next move, have either put their support behind Golden, and only Golden, OR are simply reporting what they've heard. Hopefully the latter and not the former because there ARE better options out there right now. Regardless, IMHO, Golden will recruit well here - very well - and his team's should be capable on O and ST's, BUT.....

....he must be given the $$$ to hire a DC that can actually coach defense, or, it'll be more of the same on that side of the ball.

Miami Total D Ranks Under Golden

2011 - 45th
2012 - 116th
2013 - 89th
2014 - 14th
2015 - 83rd

...so 1 decent year (2011), 1 GREAT year (2014), and 3 BAD years (2012, 2013, 2015).

The issue is that no one he would be recruiting would remember him from Miami, that was a long time ago to a 17 year old kid. They might remember him from the mess at UNC. He's a good coach, and might be worth the risk, but I simply can't imagine Barchi signing off on him.

Wasn't Butch largely "cleared" of any major wrong doing at UNC? The whole Austin et al messes?

Nuts,

No horse in the race re: Golden. Just passing along what I've heard from more than 4 different people (only 2 of which are in my regular circle here). Two others couldn't find this board with a map and a compass. Speaking personally, I wouldn't utter a peep if it's someone other than Golden. I agree with others here, he wouldn't be my first choice but we could do much worse.

He's gotta kill the tie though...lol

Al Golden would still be drenched in sweat in late November in Jersey.

He also wasn't on that list.

He name is popping up due to a rumor that he has expressed interest in the Rutgers job if it opens.

I wouldn't assume that on offense either. I looked up his stats a couple weeks ago and this was right after he got fired. At best he's mediocre and this is with all that Florida talent and speed and against competition he can out recruit from Miami. Golden's success here would be extremely dependent on coordinator choice.

2011-2015 (up to the week he got fired, he switched to uptempo spread in 2013)

total offense (70, 37, 49, 47, 68)
scoring offense (63, 49, 34, 62, 68)

total defense (45, 120, 90, 14, 78)
scoring defense (63, 49, 34, 62, 68)

Butch Davis has serious ties to the South Florida football powers. I don't know what that means to Rutgers, but if I was Miami, he would already be coaching my team.

The only people on that list that I like are Herman and Strong but considering the financial wherewithal to pull that kind of move off, I'm skeptical of their realism. Davis would be a good recruiter, he assembled an ungodly amount of talent when he was at Miami even by their standards. He did it again at UNC to a lesser degree. The UNC academic stuff would have to be addressed but was that more institutional than actually a Davis problem. He's also got that letter from the NCAA absolving him too. I still think it would be unlikely here. Schiano I don't want back and would rather turn the page and no thanks to Fleck as well.

LOL and thanks for the info, good to know, I really hope we DON'T have any one group "hitch" themselves to a single guy, and let this play out for the better of OUR program, but I'm sure it'll happen.

About Butch Davis:

Davis, 63, was an assistant coach with the Hurricanes and a defensive coordinator with the Dallas Cowboys before becoming the head coach at Miami in 1995. Davis was 51–20 during his six-year tenure at Miami. He left in 2000 to become the head coach for the Cleveland Browns, where he stayed until 2004.

North Carolina hired Davis as head coach in 2007, and the team finished 8–5 in three consecutive seasons under him. He was fired in 2011 amid an NCAA academic misconduct investigation, despite eventually being cleared of wrongdoing.

Did I see "Strong" on that list? Which strong are we talking about?

Srsly. That guy is getting destroyed at Texas of all places. Too bad he couldn't take Teddy Bridgewater with him. Now he actually has to coach and recruit, which apparently he isn't very good at.

Here is a guy that needs a second chance in life, Mark Mangino. He won a National Championship with Oklahoma as an offense of coordinator and as a HC he went to a BCS bowl with Kansas and won. He has a great offensive mind. I understand that he has had issues in the past but I feel that he is better than Golden, Christobol (sp) and Davis. He is also a great disciplinarian for those who think the team has lost a little bit of control.

There is this:

UL total defense:
2009: 65
2010: 14 (his first year)
2011: 23
2012: 23
2013: 1

Texas defense:

2014: 26 (First season)
2015: 93 - OK, this is his bad year on D.

And that's one reason RU might actually have a shot at landing him. He's a name coach, but not a hot name.

You better not be toying with us...

Is it a foregone conclusion that Strong is done at UT? Because no way are we prying him from them.

I got the guy I got the guy I got the guy!!! New canidate on the block and here are his credentials:

- Penn State background
- Miami background
- can coach D, O, AND Special Teams
- will "lock-down" "The State of Rutgers" like none-other before
- comes complete with a TIE and a SCOWL

...meet your new head coach: "Greg Golden"!!!

On a serious note...it wouldn't be the WORST idea ever....just give them both deals laden with incentives...Greg handle the D, Al the O, then they both watch over ST's and Recruiting (who also have hand-picked CO's)...I kinda like it!!! [banana][banana][banana]

Herman please! He's the only guy I'd take on that list over Schiano.

BTW I'm surprised that Golden isn't on your list since people on the round table are saying JH really likes him (i'd hate for golden to be HC... yuck...)

I'd love Herman, but just don't think we have enough money even if he did want to come here unless some of our big donors are expecting large bonuses this year.

He's not at the top of my list and I think got paid too soon at Louisville and again at Texas but I still think he's a solid coach. I think he's a bad fit at Texas and has to do a better job of choosing his OC. He missed both at Louisville and Texas on his first tries. I still don't see how he's realistic unless he's fired. Otherwise tying up with an administrator from his past who would likely be more supportive than his current circumstances would make sense. I think he'd recruit Florida well for us.
